If I was more rockin' and went to these cool shows I would...a friend brought me the Yoshitomo Nara on ice brochure from the MoMa show; that is most likely as close as I am going to get to it. However, I have the ILx sanctioned card that I bought you at the Victorian Nudes exhibit that will be coming your way soon, if it's not too late, or even if it is too late, to follow up on the ILx penpals.

I went to "Drawing Now" which was a touch disappointing. It's organised into eight "propositions" which really means eight loose groupings. I was hoping to be a little more provoked by the propositions. There's lots of good stuff in there, by artists whose names I can't remember without having the brochure in my hand. There's also lots of A Level art nonsense.

It's the right show to be doing, I think, it refelcts the clear return to fashion (acceptability) of craft-y work. Complex, highly worked stuff which appears deceptively simple seems to have been many artists' solution to a conceptual dead end. (Not that I think conceptual art has reached a dead end, but lots of people seem to...) My memory of it is of it being overwhelmingly gery-toned, with an splash of Murakami and Nara at the end as a little refresher.

It's a much much better show than the visionary architectural drawings one next door, though less good than the brief and unexpected show of German expressionist prints.

I'm hoping to fit in the Whiteread at some point before the weekend, but I'm not sure I'll be able to. No chance of getting to V. Miro. The last Carl Andre show I saw was most disappointing, uninspiring miniature versions of his tiles.

I fancy the Whiteread too, but not this week, I'm afraid. I know nothing about the Essenhigh. The Japanese show at the Serpentine (Murakami and Kaikai Kiki, which is an angry bird call rather than a name) got described in the Guardian this week as the worst show of the year, which tempts me. Anyone been?

essenhigh looks like walt disney, murakami and the marqus de sade got together and painted their most perverse visions.also they are pretty colours, the hip artist in nyc about 2 yrs ago

By the way, Anthony -- you did get that stuff from the Frick, right?

I'll go to the NY shows when I'm there. I've got to do something to make up for missing that LA show you asked me about a few months ago!

i did, i looked at the bronzio today and it made me cwy. i also wrote a poem about the chardin, which follows:

the blackblue dusk,
4:30 early evening, cold and dark
and i am on the bus home,
thinking of how miserable it is,
at home a brown envelope

in it postcards,
all bright and nostalgic
except chardins plums
which are blueblack
and dusky
but succulent

and the world is good
b/c dusk is noble
