Today it was a Salon article on India
Yesterday it was a Doctor on televison talking about South aFrica
Two Days ago it was a meeting with queer youth about sky rocketing rates
Three Days ago it was an oxfam report on Rio slums
Four days ago it was talking with cree elders about Reserves
As well as the third in Thailand or Kenya .
Everyday i hear worse and worse stats about the numbers of HIV positive rates in the world.
It seems like North Americans dont care anymore. The funding is drying up . What do we do ?

Hide under the bed. Or kidnap one of Dubya's kids and inject them with infected blood. Hey, that doesn't sound nice, but I bet US funding into research would go SKY HIGH...

Yeah, I was figuring that if, say, Jesse Helms all of a sudden got 'mysteriously' ill, things would be rather different.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I suspect my cousin is making up that he has HIV. Discuss.

Ally, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I suspect Ally is a dork...discuss. HIV , like many diseases, is subject o limited research in that drugs are only made when its financially rewarding. I guess they figure they can't sell AIDS drugs.

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, they certainly would like to - which is why pharmaceutical companies have been fighting against African countries' attempts to produce generic versions of AIDS drugs which aren't so jacked up in price.

Josh, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Everyone bitches at pharmaceutical companies but don't they need the money for R&D?

dave q, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They need billions for R and D . Fuck no, its profiteering.

anthony, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I sometimes wish that Mike would stay out of certain threads.

Ally, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Has Brazil not recently announced it'll ignore international patents to produce cheap HIV-generics for its citizenry? Seems v. [& exceptionally] "right on" policy-wise (re: obv. ethical question). Gov't condoned theft! Gov't acting like Robin Hood!

AP, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sometimes I wish Ally would tape her hands to her head and run out into traffic. I have heard that recent infection rates of HIV have been increasing due to people thinking the drugs like AZT will let you live forever

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, they've been confusing nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors with Fame.

Nick, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nick, you are my favorite European ever.

Ally, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm flattered, but what about John Cleese?

N.B. I'm still not in love with you.

Nick, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nick, I'm gonna eat your fancyness one day.

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well you've already had my soul and my dreams - what's a little fancyness? Take my wife and kids too, you might as well.

Nick, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I will eat your questions.

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wanna put "I Am Going To Eat Your Fanciness" on a shirt.

Ally, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fancy Feast is as tasty as THree Blind Rice.

Actually, click this one. Can anyone here entertain the idea of a massive worldwide fuck-up like this one without their "i don't believe in conspiracies" bs detector activating? Some very interesting reading there

interesting New York article on the Berlin Patient. so much of what's disspiriting is the necessary digressions on funding and feasibility.

I mean, nothing about it is particulary revelatory, but I thought some people might find it informative.

Georgia lawmaker suggests quarantining people with HIV

State Rep. Betty Price, a Republican from Roswell, suggested quarantining people living with HIV during a House study committee meeting addressing the barriers HIV-positive people face.

Price’s suggestion came Tuesday during a two-hour meeting of the House Study Committee on Georgians’ Barriers to Access to Adequate Health Care. Price – a medical doctor and wife of Dr. Tom Price, the former Secretary of Health & Human Services – asked Pascale Wortley if quarantining people was an option given how much the state spends on care for people with HIV. Wortley, director of the HIV Epidemiology Section for Georgia Department of Health, was discussing HIV treatment with the committee.

“It seems to me it’s almost frightening the number of people who are living that are potentially carriers, well not carriers, with the potential to spread, whereas in the past they died more readily and at that point they are not posing a risk. So we’ve got a huge population posing a risk if they are not in treatment,” Price said later during Wortley’s presentation.
