My mom just told me this. What should I do?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 20 December 2002 20:27 (twenty-three years ago)

he's humouring you

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 20 December 2002 20:30 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a rough world out there - you better go ahead and tell him what's what.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 20 December 2002 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

My mother thinks this is a great thing. I suggested to her that we should celebrate Xmas early, because I have to fly back here to NYC on Xmas day. She said maybe we could, except that my brother would be confused about presents since Santa doesn't come early... Wuh???

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 20 December 2002 20:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe if you reassure him that he still will get the same amount of gifts he will stop the charade. Otherwise he may be smarter then you think emotionaly blackmailing your parents.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 20 December 2002 20:37 (twenty-three years ago)

No, he's this innocent/gullible. It's scary how protected he is by my folks... I'll fix it soon enough. Starting in a couple of years he's going to live with me for a few weeks each summer. That should open his eyes (note: I am insanely protective of him too).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 20 December 2002 20:45 (twenty-three years ago)

How can a kid get to 12 without everyone at school telling him about Santa not existing? Are you sure he isn't just playing the parents?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 20 December 2002 21:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe. But my mom's not at all dim.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 20 December 2002 21:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Does she still buy him two sets of presents?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 20 December 2002 21:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes. Some are labeled as "Santa," some "Mom," some "Dad."

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 20 December 2002 21:34 (twenty-three years ago)

So leave your brother alone!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 20 December 2002 21:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Whoa! What's all this about Santa?

C J (C J), Friday, 20 December 2002 21:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Apparently, Santa is a myth, CJ, just like the Easter Bunny.

Personally, I think your brother knows the reality, and just isn't saying. Why should he, when he can get 2 sets of prezzies?

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Friday, 20 December 2002 21:53 (twenty-three years ago)

"Apparently, Santa is a myth, CJ, just like the Easter Bunny"

No! No! No!

*weeps*

C J (C J), Friday, 20 December 2002 21:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Hang on, is CJ also a myth like the Easter Bunny? I hope not...

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 20 December 2002 22:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm a myth, and you are a mythter

get.... coat.......

C J (C J), Friday, 20 December 2002 22:31 (twenty-three years ago)

He doesn't, he so doesn't.

Graham (graham), Friday, 20 December 2002 22:40 (twenty-three years ago)

My parents still label some presents to me and my brother (and themselves) as coming from "Santa." No foolin' us, though, no siree!

Jen (nstop), Friday, 20 December 2002 22:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I find it really bizarre that people are prepared to lie to their kids about things like Santa. Sets a really good example, doesn't it. Crikey, you can still have the fun of Santa without the lies. Actually, the bribery aspect is pretty crap too.

toraneko (toraneko), Saturday, 21 December 2002 01:44 (twenty-three years ago)

grownups don't always tell the truth and this is a good way for kids to find out.

minna (minna), Saturday, 21 December 2002 07:21 (twenty-three years ago)

giveme his asss and I'll show him a thing or two about strange men who creep in at night bringing gifts to stuff their stocking with

Queen G (Queeng), Saturday, 21 December 2002 09:33 (twenty-three years ago)

your 60 year old president still believes in satan! shoot the motherfucker in the face

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Saturday, 21 December 2002 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

He can't, he just can't. Maybe having a child who still beleives in Santa makes Christmas more exciting for your mum? My mother still puts an angel I made in nursery school on top of the tree. I'm now 23.

Anna (Anna), Saturday, 21 December 2002 16:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I find it really bizarre that people are prepared to lie to their kids about things like Santa.

When I tried to express this opinion in my undergrad lounge, some guy was like "Well, what are you supposed to do? Tell them 'People around the world are dying of starvation and genocide and being raped en masse'?" People are fucking stupid.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 22 December 2002 08:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, it's either Santa or genocide. Those are the options.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 22 December 2002 11:27 (twenty-three years ago)

The lying to kids thing is an odd one. I mean, OK, maybe they're aren't emotionally developed enough to cope with the reality of rape en masse but I guess the main reason people make up stories to tell them is that the kids seem to enjoy it and we're supposed to look back on this time of childhood innocence with fondness. But kids can be good at knowing a story isn't actually true and pretending it is anyway. Maybe like adults have forgotten how to do with religion. So perhaps we shouldn't be so scared of telling them the truth and the stories all at once.

I hope we don't all just do it cause we like kids being cute. It's like the no swearing thing.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 25 December 2002 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

My 13 year old brother thought that until this year (he's been sheltered more than most kids due to autism). Then my other brother let it slip that Santa wasn't real. He said, "Mom is that true?" and Mom said, "Yes, he's dead but the spirit of Christmas blah blah blah" It didn't seem to jar him as much as it would've years earlier, though, so he's gone around since then acting like he still believes in Santa because it's more fun that way.

I have an aunt who refused to tell her kids about Santa because it was lying. They're okay but it's no fun to spend Christmas with them because they get up at 10 AM, shower, eat, and THEN open presents, whereas we're the type to sit around in our pajamas playing with new stuff. I wonder how representative that is of people who are anti-Santa.

Maria (Maria), Wednesday, 25 December 2002 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

see we always blow up the churches before presents can be opened.

Queen G (Queeng), Wednesday, 25 December 2002 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

eleven months pass...
So, what's the update? Does the kid still believe?

Allyzay, Friday, 19 December 2003 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course he does. Santa's love is 4 REAL.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Friday, 19 December 2003 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

"Santa died" is worse than lying to them in the first place.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 19 December 2003 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think there's anything wrong with telling kids Santa exists. When I was a kid, my parents were really into leaving candies on our pillows and stuff for a week or two before Christmas and saying they were from elves, and being all sneaky about it. I'd get up from the piano to get a drink of water or something, and I'd come back like thirty seconds later and there would be a candy bar or some stickers or something hiding under my sheet music. It was just fun and kind of mysterious and my parents enjoyed it, too, and also, it was FREE CANDY.
I don't think of it as "lying," really. In my house, it was just a fun game.

kirsten (kirsten), Friday, 19 December 2003 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with thinking Santa is alive. It's a lot like thinking that Osama Bin Laden is responsible for anything or thinking that your parents still love each other.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Friday, 19 December 2003 04:26 (twenty-two years ago)

If he's still confused, I suggest giving him the oath:

"Do you renounce Santa and all his works, and all his empty promises..."

lint (Jack), Friday, 19 December 2003 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

It's totally just like that!
xpost

kirsten (kirsten), Friday, 19 December 2003 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently my brother still believes in Santa despite being told otherwise.

Maria (Maria), Friday, 19 December 2003 05:18 (twenty-two years ago)

you have a twelve-year-old brother?
i feel oooooold.

yetimike (McGonigal), Friday, 19 December 2003 05:55 (twenty-two years ago)

what I've wondered is why everyone doesn't instantly become atheist upon learning that Santa/tooth fairy/Easter Bunny aren't real.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 19 December 2003 08:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark, many do.

Yan, people such as your brother are the future of the modern commercial media.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Friday, 19 December 2003 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Santa isn't real?

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 19 December 2003 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

My parents went over to giving gifts from our cats.

Now if there's some way to merge that back into a feline santa!
Hmm.

*launches photoshop*
Shame my cat's name is Fjodor, which doesn't lend well to kringlization

Øystein H-O (Øystein H-O), Friday, 19 December 2003 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

How's this for the cat-santa's name: Santa Claws?

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 19 December 2003 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn, Sandy Claws and all that. I didn't think of it. And now my santa's all clawless, what with the mittens and all.

Øystein H-O (Øystein H-O), Friday, 19 December 2003 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Adorable!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 19 December 2003 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...
So.... Santa still your brother's hero?

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 21 February 2004 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

The real question is whether or not Santa still believes in your brother.

martin m. (mushrush), Saturday, 21 February 2004 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Will he leave Santa cookies?

Aja (aja), Saturday, 21 February 2004 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I told my brother when he was 10 the truth about Santa. I couldn't bare the thought of the poor kid being made fun of at school.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 21 February 2004 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

How'd he feel after you told him?

Aja (aja), Saturday, 21 February 2004 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

A little upset, but he kind of knew already. I just confirmed it for him, basically.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 21 February 2004 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh.

what if you told a five year old?

Aja (aja), Saturday, 21 February 2004 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey -that's not a bad idea! Why didn't I think of that?

jazz odysseus, Saturday, 21 February 2004 06:33 (twenty-two years ago)

You'd hurt the five year olds feelings I bet.

Maybe they'd just say you're wrong and run crying to their room.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 21 February 2004 06:34 (twenty-two years ago)

when did YOU learn the truth about santa, aja?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 21 February 2004 06:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know.

I just think I started not to believe the story of St. Nick and thought about who it could be.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 21 February 2004 06:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I just think I started not to believe the story of St. Nick and thought about who it could be.

dave grohl?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 21 February 2004 06:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I had no idea of who the hell Dave Grohl was at the time.

I didn't know who Dave Grohl was until about three or four months before I turned 12.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 21 February 2004 06:53 (twenty-two years ago)

or maybe you thought that mission of burma were santa's elves?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 21 February 2004 06:54 (twenty-two years ago)

No.

I didn't know them either.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 21 February 2004 06:56 (twenty-two years ago)

but the elves all sing "floaty" when they're making toys in santa's workshop.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 21 February 2004 07:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Well I didn't know that, or what "Floaty" was.

Do you like "Floaty"?

Aja (aja), Saturday, 21 February 2004 07:09 (twenty-two years ago)

it's OK, but i'm not a big foo fighters fan. it's about as good as "weenie beenie."

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 21 February 2004 07:11 (twenty-two years ago)

About as good as "Weenie Beenie"?

"Weenie Beenie" is way better!

"Floaty" isn't as bad as I thought at first, but not as good as "Weenie Beenie."

Aja (aja), Saturday, 21 February 2004 07:12 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe i should listen to the foo fighters more. i heard their 1st one (the one w/ "floaty" and "weenie beenie") when it came out and i was in france -- i thought it was OK. other than that, i just know their radio hits.

and you really should listen to some kraftwerk!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 21 February 2004 07:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe.

Just got to find it.

I was like you. I thought Foo Fighters was ok when I first heard it. I don't know what made me like it more. I began to like it so much that for three weeks, I was obssesed with it.

I like to listen to it on my walkman when we're on the high way. I also like a scenery of orange leaves on trees or snow.

Got to live back east!

Aja (aja), Saturday, 21 February 2004 07:21 (twenty-two years ago)

philadelphia is nicer than baltimore!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 21 February 2004 07:22 (twenty-two years ago)

So.

I like Baltimore!

Aja (aja), Saturday, 21 February 2004 07:23 (twenty-two years ago)
