i think i'm allergic to red wine...has anyone come across this before?

i was going out last night, and they were having red wine in the house before we left, i had a tiny glass, nothing more than a couple of sips. got to the bar we were starting in, had 2 beers but felt a bit tired, then very hot and faint and queazy. then i walked home in the subzero weather, holding both my coat and jumper because i was too hot, got home, felt a bit better, but then really struggled, terrible sleep, nightmares about oppressive geometric structures and a pounding pressured head, woke up at 8 this morning, i feel absolutely terrible still, aching everywehere, too hot, too cold, terrible headache

i can only think it was the red wine

yeah dude, could be sulfite allergy or a histamine response. you are probably not allergic to all types of red wine, though.

geeta (geeta), Saturday, 21 December 2002 09:48 (twenty-three years ago)

It's the London Virus, mate. Two-day fever followed by dry, persistent cough. On the plus side, though, you can keep drinking the wine...

My ex-flatmate is allergic to red wine. It makes her sneeze something rotten, though I don't think she suffers any more unpleasant symptoms.

I really hope it isn't the wine that's doing it! Do you actually like red wine, or drink it often?

Mark C (Mark C), Saturday, 21 December 2002 10:11 (twenty-three years ago)

only ever had it once before...wont be having it again

i can actually feel it in my bones, every single bit of me just feels broken...like i have been drugged or poisoned, this has been going on for 12 hours now

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 21 December 2002 10:23 (twenty-three years ago)

It sounds pretty virus-like to me, more than an allergic reaction, not that I know anything about the subject. Get well soon, anyway.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 21 December 2002 10:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Geeta's suggestions sound plausible to me. Try taking an antihistamine; if this truly is an allergic reaction that should help.

drink OJ now in massive quantities!!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 21 December 2002 21:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't drink red wine, as it gives me a massive asthma attack :(

C J (C J), Saturday, 21 December 2002 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

It could well be the pectin in the grape skin- usually with cheaper red wines, It may have depressed your immume system enough to let the flu in. Im noo doctor but I have extreme food sensitivities so I have sympathy much. :)

A LOT of people are allergic to various things in the red wine. I'm not saing that's actually what your illness is, Gareth, but it is possible. My best friend and my mom are both allergic to red wine, sulfites in it and stuff.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 22 December 2002 03:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yes, there are several reasons why cheap red wine hangovers are the worst. But if you're truly allergic, that's a bummer, because few things are as good as a good red wine.

Gareth feel better!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Sunday, 22 December 2002 04:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, Gareth get well! And I also hope it's not the red wine; could put a serious crimp in your Francophilism.

(oh fuck i just got that song from UB40 stuck in my head)

"Red, Red, Wine... is dancing with me"

(I have no idea how it might go)

had a bottle of this last night with some grilled flank steak. really good bottle for the price.

Batman has people to do this for him. He just sips, purses his lips and expresses his satisfaction or displeasure, while they kneel before him with expectant looks. If the wine is crap, his goons know what to do.

Aimless, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

(red wines never been friends of mines)

Man, I think this wine I bought has double fermented in the bottle. Can't tell if that's the case or if it's just shit wine. That's what I get for grabbing a bottle of Yellow Tail in the small market downstairs from my apartment.

I got totally lied to here by Ocado. Good grief! This is like drinking fucking Bombay ink. I am going to try Tesco next week for some below the radar, nice cheap plonk. if such a thing still exists.

So ... who here has tried Sainbury's Basics Red Wine (Currently £2.89)?

djh, Wednesday, 7 November 2018 20:44 (seven years ago)

probably like piss and I say this as seasoned imbiber of cheap wine. Anything cheap and nice doesn't seem to stay under the radar for long. Asda did a beautiful cheap Malbec a few years back, it won some awards and next thing it has been moved to the £6 + range. I bet it can't be any worse than Tesco's budget "Fruity Red Wine" which is £3.65 and makes one think the grapes must have pissed off the gods or something. Lol I got a 3l box of it the other week #lifeofabonviveur

calzino, Wednesday, 7 November 2018 21:23 (seven years ago)

I bought two bottles. The first I thought "This would probably be all right as a drunken second bottle and/or with some food". The second (not on the same night) I thought "I'm never drinking this again."

(I presume its not always the same wine and there's some variation).

djh, Wednesday, 7 November 2018 21:39 (seven years ago)

these Italian tv chefs often say "then add some good wine into the pan" I often make delicious sauces and gravies with some bad wine, so it does have its uses.

calzino, Wednesday, 7 November 2018 21:44 (seven years ago)

Cooking with good red wine is the worst kind of savagery. That's what cheap piss is for (although those little one-glass bottles you get in supermarkets work pretty well).

Matt DC, Wednesday, 7 November 2018 21:48 (seven years ago)

I just looked this up. The grapes are from somewhere in Spain (so probably bought from all over and blended) and since it says it's only 10.5% alcohol they were probably all underripe. Dry red wine should really get to at least around 12-13%.

Yerac, Wednesday, 7 November 2018 21:49 (seven years ago)

Malbec. Look on satellite maps, they're all made in a tiny plot of foothills near Mendoza, Argentina, and I've never encountered a bad one.

They Bunged Him in My Growler (Sanpaku), Wednesday, 7 November 2018 21:52 (seven years ago)

France has some malbec (cot) too but it's almost never shitty.

Yerac, Wednesday, 7 November 2018 21:56 (seven years ago)

I've had bad chilean malbec quite often

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 7 November 2018 22:26 (seven years ago)

Usually malbec is a pretty straightforward wine. People like it because it's kind of medium all around and fruity.
