Why is 'prawn' not in the Nokia dictionary?

And how come I have never noticed before - surely I am always texting people about prawns?

Those mysterious Finns (also not in there, though Finn is so I don't know if that should count).

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 27 December 2002 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i totally knew this was an N. thread!!

geeta (geeta), Friday, 27 December 2002 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm the only one starting them.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 27 December 2002 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"hey baby would you like to see me prawns" *SEND*

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 27 December 2002 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

How does anyone play chess by AIM without the word 'prawn'?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 27 December 2002 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

also... does not have 'morag' but will recognise 'reece' and 'christopher'

Dave (Dave), Saturday, 28 December 2002 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Morag is a pretty obscure name outside of Scotland and Home & Away, Dave.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 28 December 2002 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a friend who once broke up with a girl he was going out with because she didn't know what a prawn was -- that's pretty harsh.

Nicole (Nicole), Saturday, 28 December 2002 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

That is pretty odd in both respects.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 28 December 2002 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
haha i just txted someone about prawn platters and i'm glad i remembered this thread or i would have sent 'spawn platters'

minna (minna), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 08:02 (twenty-two years ago)

And if I hadn't been careful I'd have invited someone to the Plank on Saturday night. Imagine...

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 08:11 (twenty-two years ago)

is shrimp in there?

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember when N. discovered this I tested the dictionary for a number of variants (all there!) and wondered if it was some strange Finnish thing.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I think they use US English for all things predictive, so 'shrimp' would go before 'prawn'. Americans don't really use the word 'prawn' unless they are in the super-expensive part of the Chinese menu where it means 'langoustine' or 'incredibly large shrimp for special occasion meals'.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I concluded that prawns do not, in fact, exist.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

is crustacean in there?

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

No, but 'lobster' is.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 01:28 (twenty-two years ago)

And kipper isn't. Is there some strange Finnish logic at play?

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I think suzy may be OTM with her US vocabulary minus US spellings theory.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Another example of European's towing the US party line!

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Lara toes the greengrocer's line.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 27 February 2003 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

put in "smirnoff" with predictive text and see what you get...

j0e (j0e), Thursday, 27 February 2003 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

OH! MY! GOD!

And bizarrely apt as I am feeing pretty pickled this morning.

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 27 February 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

shot=riot=pint.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 27 February 2003 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I know... *head hurting*

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 27 February 2003 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Can someone please tell us mobile-less contributors what happens if you type 'Smirnoff' into predictive text?

(Note - "get a bloody mobile and find out for yourself you luddite" is not an appropriate response).

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 27 February 2003 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

You get poisoned.

It is strange how the mobile has finally introduced the US's number=letters to the rest of the world. How long before we start seeing ads for 087-CABBAGE?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 27 February 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

somebody called?

chris (chris), Thursday, 27 February 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Clearly Nokia in some sort of pact with Finlandia vodka (I know how to get this nectar for parties, for free).

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 27 February 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

What, in exchange for free advertising on internet message boards?

Emma, Thursday, 27 February 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

One of my favourite ever market research projects was for Finlandia. And one of my favourite ever booze-ups was drinking the free bottles of vodka that resulted.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 27 February 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I think she means five finger discount, though I've been wrong about that before.

Tegic Halis are based in Seattle though, and they invented the thing.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 27 February 2003 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I find it funny that Motorola is in the Motorola dictionary but Nokia isn't, Nokia is in the Nokia dictionary and Motorola isn't etc.

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 27 February 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Really? My Ericsson has Ericsson, Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Panasonic, Sony etc etc

Graham (graham), Thursday, 27 February 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry Graham - I've never been near a cheap phone.

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 27 February 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Where did that come from?

Graham (graham), Thursday, 27 February 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I can get hands on Finlandia through old Finnish Institute connections. Simple, really. My friend Karen organised a party for them once, where girls in wetsuits with 'tanks' went around nozzling the guests to death with contents of tanks, eg .frozen Finlandia.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 27 February 2003 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh! Get me away from here, I'm Ewing.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 28 February 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

HA HA

Sarah (starry), Friday, 28 February 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

chortle chortle

Sarah (starry), Friday, 28 February 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 28 February 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

"Chortle" is today's word on my word-of-the-day desk calendar.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Friday, 28 February 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...
There's no viking!

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 20:43 (nineteen years ago)

My phone doesn't have glasgow!

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 20:46 (nineteen years ago)

My phone hasn't learned BROSEPH yet!

R.I.P. Concrete Octopus ]-`: is a guy with a belly button piercing (ex machina), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 20:52 (nineteen years ago)

I only started using predictive text like last week, but so far I have learned: it doesn't have "dugout" but it does have "milwaukee."

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 20:52 (nineteen years ago)

No one has mentioned the fun of teaching yr phone to curse like a motherfucker!

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 20:53 (nineteen years ago)

What do you mean, teaching?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 20:54 (nineteen years ago)

Asking it to "remember" swear words.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

Coo, my phone has Milwaukee as well (I am new to this predictive text thing too), who'da thunk it? I'd prefer it have Glasgow, I'm not terribly likely to be trying to arrange things in Milwaukee. I need to go find the instruction book and learn how to teach it new words (xpost)

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

How do you ask it to remember words? (ha xpost, I guess me too)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

My phone has prawns, but not prawn. That seems odd.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

If it can't find something in dictionary it gives me the chance to spell it out, and then an option to "save".

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 20:58 (nineteen years ago)
