The band OR the idea!

Ally, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's not just an idea Ally - people are actually doing it! What a sheltered life you lead in Manhattan.

Nick, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Me and the little man have a plot to become bank robbers, you know.

Ally, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It starts with condoning thievery and before you know it, it'll be rapists and Manic Street Preachers fans.

Ronan Fitzgerald, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Come on Ronan, that's sick. There are many people whose lives have been ruined by the Manic Street Preachers, noone mentioned anything about them, this messageboard is for fooling around but you had to take it too far.

Barry, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

STOP SLAMMING ON MY BAND FUCKERS. I will start a riot, you know. A new art one. Etc.

Ally, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thieves who steal makeup and beer and such from the stores they work at are boring and pathetic, but highwayman/robin hood/pirate thieves are utterly classic.

Unlike in the previous two threads, you have not yet said what the politically correct term for thieves is. Well?

Lyra, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Socially Injusticed Misappropriators. That's the Robin Hood type.

Ronan Fitzgerald, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And who is this "little man". Is this THE Weeman, from Jackass? The Willy-Wonka-dressing skater midget?

David Raposa, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Gypsies Tramps & Thieves": Most socially offensive song of all time?

Ally, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, just the most fucking annoying. Or at least one of them.

Having thieved a couple of times in my Callow Youth, I guess I'm pretty damn classic. Nowadays I am a sweet, dew-flecked innocent.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's not annoying, it's fantastic. My sister used to think she was saying "Gypsy's Chimpanzee", which is somehow even better.

Ally, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah, now that vision of the song, that I like.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gypsys Chimpanzee could be a film. The tagline would have to be "Now they're loose in New York!!!!!!!!!!!" Eventually they would solve crimes or something. The Gypsy could be played by Jeff Goldblum, I can see it now, "If............the chimp has somehow..........managed to.............steal my..........car keys...........oh dear god no"

Ronan Fitzgerald, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's not really offensive - Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves is what the hypocritical townsfolk called Cher's family of entertainers.

Nick, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They said that about Cher? Two out of three aint bad

Ronan Fitzgerald, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Images of Meat Loaf enter my brain. DAMN YOU, Ronan!

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"not really offensive" says the man who is neither gypsy, tramp nor thief.

fred solinger, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nah, he's just a Parsee. Nutty guy. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I could be all three for all you know, fred. Have you been stalking me?

The point is YES it's obviously an offensive conjunction of terms but in the context of the song, THAT'S THE POINT. If anyone gets offended by it they are a moron.

Nick, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Says King PC. He's just stroppy cos he can't have me. My family has some fortune tellers in it. They're like gypsies.

Ally, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, and since it has not been said -- band = classic. Viva.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cher is a fuckwad

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

my grandmother told fortunes from the residue in cups of turkish coffee, and they worked and she got scared and stopped. armenian gypsy!

Lyra, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I used to read tarot cards. My pack disappeared. Now I'm pretty bored, I need new tarot cards. I'm going to start using a deck of regular cards soon.
