as most of you know, the computer's kybrd is broken. as some of you know, my right thumb is badly injured amd partially immobile. now i've just sliced the top off my left index finger with ed's global knives.

god just doesn't want me on the internet, does s/he...

meta-question- how long should i wait if it doesn't stop bleeding... it's only the top quarter inch, skinflap still attached and i can't see bone

I sliced one of my fingers very badly when cutting up lemons (ouch! ouch!) a few years back. I just closed the gap up and bound it all together tightly with a bandage, and hoped for the best. It actually healed up quite quickly, though I've got a rather impressive scar.

Just make sure your finger is clean before you bind it up, so it (hopefully) won't get infected.

Poor you!

yikes Kate, that sounds awful. similar things have happend to me twice (once on the bottom part of my thumb on the outside, once on my index finger) and i just ran it under water for ages, washed it, put lots of pressure on it and banaged it up...it healed pretty well.

get better soon...

CJ's advice strikes me as good. If it keeps bleeding, do go to a doctor or nearby hospital, sooner rather than later.

i had 2 change the bandage three times coz it kept bleeding though. but it's stopped gushing and started just oozing, so i have now bound and left it. ed and suzy r home so i can make them do hard things.

just loaded the dishwaher [with housemates' dirt dishes, grrrr] and it started bleeding again. dammit, why can't this place be as clean as when its just me...

If it keeps bleeding that way you probably should see a doctor kate...most bad cuts will eventually stop bleeding, but if you've had to change it three times already then maybe it should be looked at.

I second Nicole's advice Kate, I think you should go to the nearest A&E. Yer a musician, yr hands are precious, right?

Thirded: if it is still a problem after three hours, it's time to get help (unless it was a tiny bit and has already stopped, I guess).

Oooh... poor kate. Hope it's ok.

(hugs) Ow, but I can empathise with you, Kate. A year or so ago, I managed to fall down on my face and slice open my chin. Hours later in the ER, I needed no stitiches....only a bandage on my face to keep it shut.

What did your GP say? Tis clear that an injury like that may need stitches (but then, I'm not sure). The reason tis bleeding so much is because the hand has so many blood vessels so close to the top of your skin. As Sandy and CJ said, just keep pressure on it.

Feel better, madam.

you could stick you finger in Julians ass and see if that heals it.

:(

Sorry Kate. Bummah.

You need one of them thingies that you talk into and it types for you. Is there anything like that? Or have I been watching too much goofy old sci-fi?

Kate is no longer a musician, shes a glamour model on the cutting edge of fashion.

it finally stopped bleeding overnight. looked at it this morning and it's not as bad as i thought- but still pretty gruesome. i think actually, being a musician, my callus saved it from being worse... it's going to hurt like fuck if i start playing guitar again. i just made the mistake of getting it wet. ugh.

it's weird to touch it, cos i really can feel where it's sliced. it's the oddest feeling, not like a phantom limb, but phantom fingertip.

masonicboom, Thursday, 2 January 2003 21:07 (twenty-two years ago) link

Unfun, Kate. :-( I echo the 'get it looked at' advice and hope it gets better ASAP. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 January 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago) link

It is actually healing up just fine on its own. The only thing that worries me slightly is I seem to have lost feeling in the reattached tip. I thought it was guitar callus causing the lack of sensation and phantom fingertip feeling, but no. Callus is retreating and it's still numb. I don't know if this is because of the scar, or if it permanent (god i hope not) but it's sure making my typing weird and I freaking hope it doesn't affect my guitar playing. I don't want to be a fingertipless freak...

The Phantom Phingertip, would that be the ultimate name for a neo-psych band or what?
