Tad is Rooting for a Jets v. Giants Super Bowl (and So Should You)

actually, i'd be happy if the Jets make it to the Super Bowl ... and they've been 8-2 in their last 10 games, and Chad Pennington is like the Second Coming of Joe Montana so what the hell? still, a "subway super bowl" would be great.

thoughts?

Herman Edwards/Jim Fassel (llamasfur), Friday, 3 January 2003 07:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

Up until 2 weeks ago, the Giants played the ugliest football I've had the displeasure of witnessing. Actually, they were pretty terrible last week, too - Tiki, you HOLD the ball. HOLD. I have a feeling they're going to be terrible in the playoffs. I hope San Fran chews them up like the sad sod of the Meadowlands. Also - Jeremy Shockey needs to either shut his yap or get put down hard by some cagey veteran who doesn't take kindly to some punk kid getting all WWE after every single catch he makes. Every NFC team looks very, very suspect (unless San Fran can borrow Tampa Bay's defense for a couple of weeks) (or McNabb does his usual thing).

The Jets, on the other hand, have been godlike the past couple of months (barring a few oops moments) (& some John Hall misadventures), and I can definitely see them doing quite well in the playoffs. Raiders Schmaiders - if a team ably exploits their 2nd-rate secondary, Rich Gannon could throw for 600 yards and still come up short. (That'd be a neat trick, losing like that.)

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 3 January 2003 07:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

Giants ought to bring in Rondé to carry the ball.

Nonetheless, the 9er secondary is just too vulnerable to stop Kollins, Toomer and Shlockey, and the 9er offense too often in Just-hanging-on mode.

Leee (Leee), Friday, 3 January 2003 07:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

i want to see the Giants beat the Niners 'cause the Niners are Satan's Football Team. otherwise, i agree mr. popshots -- i don't think that they're going anywhere. either the eagles or the packers will make short work of them.

speaking about the eagles, they're all geared up for the 'bowl in Philly -- when McNabb went down, you'd think that someone had shot the mayor or something, what with all the coverage the Philly papers were giving to the story. since philly's becoming my "home away from home," i would root for them -- 'cept the memories of the Buddy Ryan Eagles still linger.

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 3 January 2003 07:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

They linger, and they make the team that much better to cheer for. In spite of the Eagles having home field advantage, being favoured, whatever, I'm not looking forward to the NFC semis. I want to see Oakland crash and burn. I fucking hate the Giants, always have, always will. Shockey doesn't improve my feelings. I like the Jets, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them in the SB. The Packers are the team I worry about in the NFC. Favre can win games by himself, and although the Eagles posess a demoralizing defense... The one interesting stat that ESPN had was that of the top ten rushers in the league, only one of them was on a team that made the playoffs (Tiki). What does that say? To me it says a balanced attack gets you where you need to go in the playoffs (I'm a fucking genious). Go Eagles, go Jets. Tampa can suck my ass, and so can the Giants.

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 3 January 2003 17:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm so smart I misspelled genius. And possess, and defence. Typical Eagles fan, I suppose.

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 3 January 2003 17:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

So how this weekend's games will pan out:

Colts @ Jets -- Jets destroy them. Colts defense young and inexperienced. I foresee a 27-10 type shellacing.

Browns @ Steelers -- Browns win the upset of the week. The suddenly-not-a-bust William Green moves the ball well over the Steelers, and Holcombe hits 17 of 25 for 220 yards and a TD. The Steeler offense plays well, but just like early in the season, costly turnovers plague them. The Browns defense does just enough, winning it 20-17.

Giants @ 49ers -- Fatigued from the cross-country trek, not to mention last week's OT win, the Giants start slowly (dropping balls, dumb penalties, Tiki not doing much) and the the 49ers jump out to an early lead (Barlow breaks a screen for a long TD). But the 49ers offense starts to falter (throw it to TO, Jeff!), and Collins' accuracy begins to dominate the game. It comes down to a final drive for the G-Men, down by 6 and needing a touchdown. Collins dumps it to Barber in the flat around the Niner 20 yard line, and Shockey frees up Tiki with a big block. Giants win, 21-20.

Falcons @ Packers -- My prediction of this game could go either way based on whether or not Darren Sharper plays. Quite simply, if he plays, the Packers win, if he doesn't, they lose. The focus will be on my boy Vick, but a Falcon win depends solely on the DBs (Buchanan needs a big game) and the RBs (likewise for Dunn). The Packers will move the ball. Vick will struggle early (as he always has, even in his days at VT), but a third quarter push will send the game into the 4th with GB leading 17-13. A Falcon drive around the 7 minute mark will give them the lead, 20-17, but the Packers answer with 1:50 left on the clock. Score 24-20. Now, if Sharper's playing, the Falcons get down to the 20 and can't get it in, Pack win. If Sharper's out, Vick is marvelous on the final drive and pulls the upset.

Now all these games will make me look a fool.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 3 January 2003 17:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

Not bad choices, except for that you have the Giants winning. I haven't as much confidence in the Falcons, though, seeing as it'll be around 32 degrees F tomorrow with a 50% chance of snow. How's a dome team gonna play in that? I just don't see that game being that close. I'd love to see the Browns win.

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 3 January 2003 19:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

There can be no doubt about a Browns victory Sunday.

That is all.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 3 January 2003 19:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think that Pittsburgh losing to the Browns is slightly less likely than me beginning to spontaneously shit gold bricks.

Dan = alchemassist?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 3 January 2003 19:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

My reasoning for why Cleveland will pull the upset: Both games this season could have been and should have been won by the Browns. Combine this with the much improved play from William Green, the fact that Steelers linebacker Bell might be out (which would be huge) and how well the Browns have played with Holcombe at the helm, and I think you've got the makings of an upset. The Steelers have done well to turn their season around, but their running game is suspect, and I'm still not a Tommy Maddox believer (their receiving corp is, obviously, stellar, though). Also, a Browns upset would surprise me, even though I'm predicting it.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 3 January 2003 19:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

The Browns suck, what the hell is a Brown? I pick teams entirely on mascots and "Brown" is not a mascot.

I hate the Jets, too, but at least that frigging layabout Testaverde is gone.

I really hate the Jets. What the fuck are these games anyway, did you see the Packers/Falcons one? Another rout. What's the point of WATCHING them if they're going to be boring like that? 20-19 Giants-Bills those were the days, my friends.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 5 January 2003 04:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm not hugely in favor of anyone since the Pats didn't make it and the Redskins are still.. um.. well, at least they broke the streak v Dallas. .
Now that Sunday's upon us I'm picking the Browns in a close one & the 49ers even though, yes, they are evil.

What is going on in this Giants game? SF have scored like two touchdowns in about 5 seconds. Is it because I'm watching? I like how they keep ragging on Sehorn.

Dude, Tracer, between that and the finger sewn to chest near happening, your poor roommate isn't having the best couple months.

However, at least your electricity didn't go out for one minute exactly RIGHT AS THE GIANTS WERE SETTING UP FOR THEIR FIELD GOAL IN THE LAST 6 SECONDS OF THE GAME. What the fuck is that? I had to call my dad, who was like "WHO IS IT?!" and I was like, "What's going on? My power just went out!" Then he said "JESUS FUCKING CHRIST" and the power came back on. He wasn't saying anything, apparently he dropped the phone when the whole snap debacle came about. I wasn't sure until my mom got on the phone what happened, if he was yelling at me for calling him during that part of the game, or at the lights thing, or at the game.

Turned out to be the game. GODDAMN YOU JASON SEHORN, YOU PUT A POX ON THE GIANTS WITH YOUR WINKY GOOD LOOKS AND LACK OF TALENT.

ron, Monday, 6 January 2003 02:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

J.lu - yeah, I'm with you, it's about time. I had the misfortune of spending Thanksgiving with a bunch of Cowboys fans..
As for the Giants, their behavior in the last minute of the game made me see why they choked - I mean, two penalties that could've given them an extra 15 yards ? forgetting the special teams basics by not downing the ball since the field goal try was THIRD down ?
and yeah, I love football too. Sometimes I wonder if I just like the idea of liking football b/c of some twisted impulse to keep it real or something, but games like the two I saw today remind me that I just love football.

For three quarters the Browns defense ruled like Alf with a +5 Onyx sword. In the fourth quarter the defensive coordinator decided to change everything they were doing and allow Pittsburgh to win.

Browns mascot fact: In the 60's the Browns mascot was the "Brownie", a pixie like character. Deemed not macho enough it was shelved in favor of morbidly obese men in 'Dawg' masks.

The Jets uniforms are the best thing about the playoffs. Now if San Diego would go back to their electric blue jerseys I could die a happy man.

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 05:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

the niners won the game the same way that Bush "won" the election ... i.e., rotten and corrupt officiating. as any good niner-hater can tell you, this is not the first time that NFL refs have looked the other way wr2 blatant niners penalties. (that said, the giants shouldn't have let Garcia move up and down the field like he did, Sehorn's (non-)coverage of Terrell Owens was deadly, etc. but still ...)

here's to hoping that either the Bucs or the Eagles (yes, the Eagles will beat the Falcons) will put some serious hurting on Garcia and Owens (especiallyTerrell Owens ... god, i hate that fucking asshole).

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 12 January 2003 22:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

Dude, people keep getting all messed up round these parts about the 9ers/Giants game still. The bottom line is that the evil empire of the crazy officials DID cost the Giants the game in the short term of a few seconds, but the Giants cost themselves the game by having people like Sehorn on the team. I mean, it's not entirely his fault or anything but what the hell? I mean you're up like 400 points, and you blow it? And then say the refs cost you the game? It's true, the refs called NOTHING against SF, and then blew the last play so spectacularly to be something of made up fantasy, but the refs didn't force Shockey to drop a surething touchdown pass.

I missed all the games this weekend due to social life and work. I'm getting the second half of the Jets game, which is pretty boring so far.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 12 January 2003 23:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

oh i agree completely with you, Ally, wr2 the giants allowing the niners to come back. they shouldn't have been in the position where they had to kick a field goal to win, after being up by 20+ points ... especially against such a pathetic excuse for a quarterback like Jeff Garcia.

but two points: (a) the Niners have always been the beneficiaries of cheesy, sleazy officiating -- this game just demonstrated it in a manner that can't be refuted by niners fans; and (b) yer argument is perfectly rational, factual and fair ... mine is built on an irrational (but well-deserved) hatred for the niners, and i cut them no slack whatsoever -- so I win! ;-p

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 12 January 2003 23:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

The thing is, I mean the sleazy officiating was definitely a factor, but the Giants suddenly turning into the Cardinals for two hours was also a factor. The officiating was brutal though.

I don't have sympathy for the Giants, despite the fact that I like them, solely based upon the fact that I like the Bills better so the Giants are getting their just rewards for the 1990 season Super Bowl... :P

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 12 January 2003 23:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

The 9ers are not the beneficiaries of skewed officiating, as being a close observer of them for 13+ years I've seen as many blown calls if not more in favor of the oppenents. Of course, this is the victimization, "grass is greener" stance that all fans/teams take. In any event, it was always certain individual players (Rice being the most notable example) that gained extra leeway from refs, as is the case in all sports.

Leee (Leee), Sunday, 12 January 2003 23:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

They called absolutely zippo against the 9ers during the second half of the game against the Giants. I mean, yes, there are tons of blown calls in the NFL but there are times when it's very conspicuous and justified to wonder just what the hell is going on - I mean the last part of that game looked like someone's bookie called the refs and threatened them, to be honest.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 12 January 2003 23:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

But the second half of the game was almost penalty free on both sides, with the major exception being the two scrums after the 9ers' last TD. And from what's been printed here in the papers (grain of salt, yes), all that Owens said to the Giants' DBs was to look up at the scoreboard now, and apparently that's the taunting for which he was flagged.

Leee (Leee), Monday, 13 January 2003 00:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

well, whatever the truth about the 9ers and the officiating they get, one thing's for certain ... the Jets are out. it was nice while it lasted ... and thanks for the great year, Chad and Herman and Laverunes!
