"I Got Dibs": Classic or Dud

Clearly classic. Makes me think of Warner Bros cartoons - can't explain why. Atavistic connection, methinks. Or some Jimmy Cagney gangster thing, schee?

Anyway, like I said, classic.

I got Cosmo then (I always prefered Cosmo anyway, less thick).

Pete (Pete), Friday, 3 January 2003 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I always end up saying 'I got DUBS' for some reason. Dibs is a weird word, so I always question it being the right one.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 3 January 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Baggsey that mine

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Friday, 3 January 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic, but only if used in relation to seats, food, or hot girls/boys.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 3 January 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

my mom's family are dibbs

mark s (mark s), Friday, 3 January 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

bagsying = classic, ie u got there first and left yer mark.

dibs = dud, though.

masonicboom, Friday, 3 January 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

the English cannot be happy with a new-minted word unless it ends with an "-ee" sound

Americans don't care much about the vowel sound as long as the word ends with an "s"

dibs = Amerian classic

J0hn Darn13ll3 (J0hn Darn13ll3), Friday, 3 January 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

whereas baggsey = English classic

J0hn Darn13ll3 (J0hn Darn13ll3), Friday, 3 January 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

We just say "bags it" in deepest darkest Glasgow...

smee (smee), Friday, 3 January 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

q = Quizz?
a = Ego!!

mark s (mark s), Friday, 3 January 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

no, that's not it. bagsy = actual physical process, u leave yer bags on a seat/bed so it is yours. dibs, ie just calling out something is yours with no effort = colonial absentee landlording therefore massive dud.

masonicboom (suzy), Friday, 3 January 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Usually yelling "I've got dibs!" with regard to getting the passenger seat in the car also involves very physical running and shoving of the other person out of the way. At least in my family.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 3 January 2003 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

If someone would just say "Shotgun," all problems would be solved.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Friday, 3 January 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

no, doesn't compare to bagsie at all.

Graham (graham), Friday, 3 January 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I think they're actually practically identical and that the differences between the two would be unrecognizable to anybody without a particular stake in one or the other

J0hn Darn13ll3 (J0hn Darn13ll3), Friday, 3 January 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

does anyone remember "I blacked it"? I used to use this at video game arcades to say that I was up next on a machine.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 3 January 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

dibs is British innit? It's been around for years!!!

What is this thread about?

jel -- (jel), Friday, 3 January 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

But I seem to remember that in my part of the world, we corrupted the term and pronounced it "dubs."
WHAAAA???? So, I'm not crazy?

article on dibs

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 3 January 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

dud, when used among friends in pursuit of someone romantically, as if the romantic object had no say in the matter. Unless that person has a big rock or wedding ring on his or her finger; then I reckon that's a fair form of dibs.

felicity (felicity), Saturday, 4 January 2003 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

bagsie is a PHYSICAL ACT of putting a bag or coat or something to show your posession of said thing. dibs is PURELY VERBAL. that is the difference.

kate, Saturday, 4 January 2003 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

if you use a coat is it still bagsie?

felicity (felicity), Saturday, 4 January 2003 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

YES!!!

i mean, if you replace your whackadoo singer with the flower on his head for a singing gnome, are you still a prog group?

kate, Saturday, 4 January 2003 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

exactly

felicity (felicity), Saturday, 4 January 2003 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

putting down a chair to save your parking space?

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Tuesday, 28 December 2010 15:59 (fourteen years ago)

I only know about that from the site "passive aggressive notes."

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Tuesday, 28 December 2010 16:00 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, they were everywhere this morning

http://www.ilxor.com/glyloop.mp3 (Aerosol), Tuesday, 28 December 2010 16:03 (fourteen years ago)

One time in Boise I was saving a parking space for a friend who was bringing round a U-Haul, so I put a little wooden bench in a parking space and sat on it. A few minutes later, the bus stopped in front of my bench to let me on. I guess they respond to imaginary and self-made bus stops?

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Tuesday, 28 December 2010 16:04 (fourteen years ago)

I could see it getting really heated in my neighborhood if someone were to ignore or move a saved spot.

I sort of understand the reasoning, I guess. You spend a couple hours shoveling out and you feel a certain entitlement to that spot, but what are you gonna do?

http://www.ilxor.com/glyloop.mp3 (Aerosol), Tuesday, 28 December 2010 16:10 (fourteen years ago)

I would feel silly doing this though
