it is true i'm afraid...unfortunately

gareth (gareth), Friday, 3 January 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

there is a case for being persistenly stylish though!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 3 January 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, i disagree with myself

with certain things, style works much better than persistance, persistance can be counter-productive

perhaps, you could argue that style is merely the art of disguising persistance?

taking sides: peter cook vs bob monkhouse

taking sides: stern john vs paul eddington

gareth (gareth), Friday, 3 January 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

or, perhaps more sadly (and more seriously)

ts: everton vs west ham

gareth (gareth), Friday, 3 January 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I would choose bob monkhouse over peter cook, west ham over everton, and stern john over paul eddington.

Style is like confidence persistance in the face of fashion trends.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 3 January 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

with regard 2 *what* specifically... the opposite sex, fuck no, or i'd have the perfect relationship. style is everything, persistence nothing. unless u like ending up with psychos/people who will settle for psychos.

in everything else, it's more persistence [to a point- there is always a point where you should give up and do something else] but more important is the right contacts and directed [as opposed to blind] luck.

jel are you saying Everton have style? i cant work this one out

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 4 January 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

six months pass...
this was a good thread, but i think it deserves more answers. i think success perhaps occurs when persistance and style are combined, but this is of course not easy as persistance and style are antithetical. style is the absence of persistance, and persistance is the absence of style. as so often, it is about ambiguousness

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 27 July 2003 10:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Everton are workmenlike.

im reading thompsons stuff from the 80s right now, and it is a perfect example of this.
