So I guess I can go on tour?

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Friday, 3 January 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh no! Do you qualify for the dole though?

Aaron W, Friday, 3 January 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't know... i hope so

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Friday, 3 January 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you in the U.S. or U.K. (I forget)? I wish I'd get laid off so I could go on the dole and get stuff done during the day (instead of surf around on ILE all day long and do bits of work).

Aaron W, Friday, 3 January 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

USA!

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Friday, 3 January 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

If you got laid off and not fired then you qualify for unemployment compensation.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 3 January 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

But you have to have been employed at your ex-company for a year (that's what all my unemployed friends have told me at least).

Aaron W, Friday, 3 January 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

aw fuck ... i started work in may

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Friday, 3 January 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

That's not true at all. You need to have been employed for a year, but not by the sam company.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 3 January 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh. I bet it changes from state-to-state... right? Bet you could look it up on Ye Olde Internet.

Aaron W, Friday, 3 January 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

(Yes, only people who worked at WalMart or Sam's Club can get unemployment.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 3 January 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I just dropped out of school so no dice

unless part time counts....

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Friday, 3 January 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Depends on the state. In my state, your employer pays for unemployment insurance. I believe you get a stipend proportional to the overall amount that various employers have payed into through your years of employment.

I was part-time and enrolled in school, and got on the dole for two weeks before finding another job.

cprek, Friday, 3 January 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm really glad I just read the first "Burn Collector" coolection which talks a lot about not having a job and still having fun.

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Friday, 3 January 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought not having a job was by definition, fun. ;)

cprek, Friday, 3 January 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I think I might get drunk a lot and visit friends.

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Friday, 3 January 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

That's the spirit!

cprek, Friday, 3 January 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Great solution!
:)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 3 January 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I need to finish off my noise setup and go on a tour that is mostly designed to have me mooch food / booze / druqs off of semi-strangers.

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Friday, 3 January 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

does "get laid off" mean "get laid" too?

erik, Friday, 3 January 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Only if you're lucky.

rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 3 January 2003 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I should ambark on a tour of the united states to visit ex grilfriends and attempt to acquire vds!

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Friday, 3 January 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Hope you have adequate medical insurance then!

C J (C J), Friday, 3 January 2003 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Friday, 3 January 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

ancient chinese remedies involves sacrifying ex-girlfriends

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 3 January 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 3 January 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

No, forget work! Find cats!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 3 January 2003 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

My cat allergy has ruined one relationship!

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Friday, 3 January 2003 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

the chinese never cared much for cats

erik, Friday, 3 January 2003 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

So I should date a chinese girl?

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Friday, 3 January 2003 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought Siamese cats came from there or is that racism on the part of Disney implanting that thought into my childhood education?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 3 January 2003 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 4 January 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Jonathan, that sucks, I'm sorry. Check with your workforce commission about unemployment.

I got it once when I had been laid off (was at the place 3 years) and then another time when I had quit a job and couldn't find another one. (here, if you can prove you've been looking for at least 3 mths and are willing to accept reasonable offers of employment then you qualify.)

    good luck

    I'm crazy and I'm hurt
    Head on my shoulders
    Going...berserk

    eleven years pass...

It Is Happening Again. Second time in two years!

They're dropping the French program due to budget cuts, just like they did at my last school. Which means another year being bounced around to whatever random school in the district needs a French teacher, if indeed there is such a school, what with our plunging enrollment and budget cuts all around. Four years since I switched to secondary teaching - five if you include my student teaching year - and I have never yet spent more than one year at the same school.

All very annoying. One day I would like to go through a spring semester without having to explain to my students that I'm not coming back and sorry, they can't take French 2 in 8th grade after all, and no, they probably won't be ready for French 2 anymore by the time they get to high school.

    so sorry

Nedlene Grendel as Basenji Holmo (map), Saturday, 12 March 2022 19:00 (three years ago)

Thank you, everyone. To make everything much, much worse, I just learned in the last hour that my work insurance, which I just switched over to, is trying to make me pay about $850 a month for my migraine meds, which cost about $16/month with my previous insurance. So being laid off now seems like the least of my problems. If it weren't that my job involves children who will be let down in a big way if I just walk out, I would quit now. I may have to anyway, if I really have to pay a month's rent for meds every month that I stay in this job.

Lily Dale, Saturday, 12 March 2022 23:48 (three years ago)

That's a helluva lot to deal with. I hope your situation improves soon.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Saturday, 12 March 2022 23:56 (three years ago)

Thanks, Aimless. Sorry for dumping all these complaints on the thread. I was feeling pretty good about my ability to roll with the punches this morning when I had merely been laid off, but then I found out about the insurance and it all got scarier. The necessity of paying vast amounts of money each month not to be in physical pain feels like a combination of torture and blackmail, and paying that money for the privilege of a few more months in a job that is laying me off is especially infuriating. But hopefully that part of it turns out to be a mistake of some kind, and I can go back to being merely annoyed that I have to start job-hunting again.

Lily Dale, Sunday, 13 March 2022 01:06 (three years ago)

    ugh, sorry dude

dump all the complaints you want btw
