??

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 4 January 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry i don't get much opportunity for this kind of thing, did i get something wrong?

my mum will be pleased though: when i wz in town on monday it looked like the gay meadow wd be flooded and everyone play in their separate coracle, but the waters all went south this year

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 4 January 2003 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

No it's correct I was just shocked by you starting a footie thread!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 4 January 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark, what's a gay meadow and what is it flooded with when it's flooded?

suzy (suzy), Saturday, 4 January 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Suzy have you been socialising with Dan this Christmas!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 4 January 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

mark, it's Kevin Ratcliffe !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 4 January 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ! Suzy doesn't know gay meadow. It's shrewsbury's football ground, by the river severn.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 4 January 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

it's really gaye bykers on acid meadow, they shortened it.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 4 January 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

jel, gaye bykers on acid - were a naff 80s grebo band.

Shrewsbury had some experienced players playing today: Jemson, Atkins, Woan.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 4 January 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I've always wondered who they were, they used to get reviewed in the extra reviews section of Metal Hammer (ie not the bit where they reviewed the metal), I assumed they were some fearsome hardcore band from Germany.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 4 January 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

It's heart-warming, innit. Good for Shrewsbury. It doesn't say that much about Rooney's abilities if he can't even fashion something against a lowly 3rd division team...

I'm gutted for Steady Mike, though.

Mark C (Mark C), Saturday, 4 January 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

They should be nicknamed the gay shrews. 'Up the gay shrews' would be such a great chant.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 4 January 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Speaking of Gaye Bykers on Acid and leading on from my What Do I Do With My Shit CDs thread, please nominate people to be strangled with the tape from a 20p cassette by Hyperhead or whatever the inevitably godawful band Mary Byker was in between GBoA and Apollo 440 were called.

(Yes, I really do own things this shit. I mean, I know it's fairly obvious from my ILX posts that I own a lot of rubbish, but even I don't know what possessed me in cases like this.)

(Waits for a regular I like to turn out to be an unexpectedly huge Pigface fan and dice me into little pieces for dissing M Byker.)

I would try and tie in Rooney with that thread too but I might even keep that album. There isn't enough shambolic lo-fi Casio Arab Strap in my life. The other band called Rooney are fairly dud, though.

I am so off-topic but I think any attempt to pretend I know about football would be disastrous. Carry on...

Rebecca (reb), Saturday, 4 January 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I had such a great day at the Valley, that I wasn't nearly as crushed by the result as I perhaps should've been. Also, it's Kevin Ratcliffe, and losing to Shrewsbury doesn't seem nearly as bad as losing to, say, Macclesfield or Boston Utd, though technically, it's almost precisely that bad.

The whole weekend would've been saved by a Man City win today. Bah.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 5 January 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

that's bcz we are the plucky yokel underdogs!!

(haha "we")

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 5 January 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I could never get my head round the way that Shrewsbury had a league football team (and a decent one in the old second division for most of the 80s) but that first-class cricket was not played there - lumped it more with Worcester/Taunton/Canterbury than with Scunthorpe/Rotherham/Darlington etc etc. IIRC the Shrews have been in the league longer than most other teams from what would have been seen 50 years ago as non-football areas, though ... everyone else from Peterborough and Oxford through Wimbledon onto Boston United seem to have joined post-1960 (Hereford came and went in that time).

ha this is the moment I recall the Morecambe moment two years ago at their home tie against Ipswich (as opposed to the one at Portman Road on Saturday)

radio commentator: (rose-tinted sigh) "could be the 50s, couldn't it?" (the radio commentary at Shrewsbury was v.similar of course)

Match of the Day highlights: young rosy-cheeked Morecambe fan blah blah clearly wearing Eminem hoody

R"P"C (robin carmody), Monday, 6 January 2003 05:55 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ! Suzy doesn't know gay meadow. It's shrewsbury's football ground, by the river severn.

i honestly read this as "the river of semen".

Chelsea at home. Come on the Shrews!

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 6 January 2003 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

come on Farnborough too!

poor poor West ham.

chris (chris), Monday, 6 January 2003 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmm ... a friend who used to live in Shropshire once told me about the *third*, local pronounciation of Shrewsbury: something like "Shroosbury" (a very definitive s rather than a rambling quasi-z)

robin carmody (robin carmody), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

definitive = definite

robin carmody (robin carmody), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

The Shrews dream ends here. Sorry Shrews.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

that first-class cricket was not played there - lumped it more with Worcester/Taunton/Canterbury than with Scunthorpe/Rotherham/Darlington

Robin, You have to walk round the cricket ground at Feetham's to get in to see Darlo play footie. At least until they move next season.

Darlington's a lot less old heavy industry than Scunthorpe or Rotherham, despite it's railway heritage.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

yes but do Durham play *first-class* cricket at Feethams? they've only been a first-class county since 1992, anyway - I know Yorkshire used to play at Middlesbrough (which was in the North Riding until 1974) and that was the closest FC cricket came to the north-east.

I was actually aware of Darlington being more of a market town and less heavy industrial than we southerners tend to assume - at any rate the Tories have held it from time to time, certainly in the 50s, and most recently in the Thatcher era. Mind you, the Tories actually held SUNDERLAND SOUTH in the 50s, and Sunderland North was only a Labour marginal!!!

robin carmody (robin carmody), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha, Suzy and Di are COMPLETELY on my wavelength.

I was going to stand up for Pigface, but then I remembered what they sounded like.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

before gay was stolen by the homosexuals, it was a good old english word meaning "muddy, low-lying, cold, prone to flooding but on the plus side quite close to the first safeway to open in england in 1967, only a few centuries away now hurry hurry hurry"

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey now, Pigface had their moments. Then Chris Connelly left.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

that Safeway thing is brilliant if true

robin carmody (robin carmody), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Robin - I'm pretty certain Durham don't play at the Feethams.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not even interested in cricket but Durham have played first class matches at Feethams, although most are played at the Riverside (not Boro Dr C).

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

yep first safeway in the uk: there was a sign on the wall, "this is your manager: chuck [something]" and a photo, that was the coolest thing ever

at a v.early visit i encountered a scary clown, also!!

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

They invited you to chuck things at their manager? That's my kind of supermarket.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

great post Mark ... more fire for my fascination!

finding out that the first Safeway in the UK was in Shrewsbury rather than Stevenage is like the reverse of discovering that Nicholas Soames used to be MP for Crawley rather than, say, Wealden or Bexhill and Battle.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
i'm so psyched!! chelsea tomorrow your so-called flower shows and boutiques will be a sea of lilies and black crepe, and even your boots will seem to pinch!!

mark s (mark s), Friday, 24 January 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

what about their buns?

chris (chris), Friday, 24 January 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

their buns are toast!!

mark s (mark s), Friday, 24 January 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

and their girls?

chris (chris), Friday, 24 January 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

they will be hot and cross!!

mark s (mark s), Friday, 24 January 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

here lies a man called bun
he was killed by a gun
his name was not bun but wood
but bun would not rhyme with gun
but bun would!!

mark s (mark s), Friday, 24 January 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The most fearsome bun of all:

mark s (mark s), Friday, 24 January 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I really, *really* hope this game is a draw.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 24 January 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

haha i forgot to check this out (so much for my new-found role as uber-fan)

what happened?

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 26 January 2003 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Hasn't been played yet Mark!

It's live on the telly 2nite! 6:30pm BBC1!

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 26 January 2003 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I think 3-0 Chelsea. I hope.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Sunday, 26 January 2003 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

And after Dr C's team today, you have Tim H's side in the league next week!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 26 January 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

oh those plucky little giant-killers!!

what is "the league"?

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 26 January 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you really want an explanation? It's just that, cup run notwithstanding, Shrewsbury are languishing near the bottom of the bottom division of the football league. Among the handful of teams below you are my beloved Bristol Rovers and Tim H's beloved Exeter, who you play next week. All of us have some danger of relegation into non-League football, something that has been known to kill some clubs.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 26 January 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Poor old West Ham are really getting a spanking eh?

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 26 January 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

6-0 with 12 minutes left: I still fancy my local club to make a comeback!

(Note: this is a lie, obviously.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 26 January 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

How can a team with good players play so so poorly? United are really getting revenge for the last time they met in the cup. Impressed by Keane today, moreso than any other match since his comeback, though I guess he's not up against much.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 26 January 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I think West Ham seriously lacked confidence, and Man U's good start wiped away what little they had, and since then it's just been misery for them.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 26 January 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

what has this to do with the shrews?

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 26 January 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Man Utd could be your next opponents, if you beat Chelsea.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 26 January 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

if = when surely

and when = IN FOUR HOURS TIME!!

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 26 January 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I think we have to keep open the possibility, however remote, that Chelsea might get through, if only to pacify Dr C.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 26 January 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Come on the Shrews!!!

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 26 January 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

(eeek! I hope Dan doesn't read this thread!)

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 26 January 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Not looking too promising on the basis of the first half, Mark.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 26 January 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Bad luck, Mark. 4-0 to Chelsea.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 26 January 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

but the Shrews nearly got one!

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 26 January 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

isn't it, like, cheating when you play w. much better players?

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 26 January 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

If you're Shrewsbury, you have to be used to that kind of problem.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 26 January 2003 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Good game - I thought Shrews did v. well especially 2nd half. Their keeper was a hero and they surely would have scored from Jemmo's free kick if ANY OTHER KEEPER except the magnificent Carlo had been in between Chelsea's sticks. (On this season's performances he really is the best keeper I've ever seen). Good to see Carlton Cole and Jody Morris get goals.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 27 January 2003 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
Can Shrewsbury bounce back at first time of asking?

Aldershot Town Vs Shrewsbury Town - Play Off Final at Stoke City Britannia Stadium

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure Mark will be travelling to Cardiff for that.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

oh no, Mark will not be travelling to Cardiff ! Stoke is in Staffordshire

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoops! Well, given Mark's actual real degree of interest in football, it's rather a moot point.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

haha yes but i knew where stoke was

mark s (mark s), Monday, 3 May 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Shrewsbury Town are back in the football league !

Aldershot are officially the worst penalty takers in the world. Even after Holland.
