It's amazing that ostensibly sensible people, some of them Russian, haven't worked out that the easiest way to get Russians to support something is to tell them that Americans want to stop them doing it. I doubt the majority of people care either way about the law in question but there isn't much more sacred than national political autonomy. It's one of the cornerstones of Putin's appeal.
The reporting doesn't really help either. The situation is fucked but claiming that "Russia has effectively banned homosexuality" or that the state gives tacit approval to neo-Nazi murder creates even more of a credibility gap.
