The Acceptance That it's OK To Be Cruel to the People on "The Google Threads": Classic or Dud?

--question raised on a resurrected thread, rightly I think

J0hn Darn13ll3 (J0hn Darn13ll3), Sunday, 5 January 2003 04:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I say "Dud" but with some qualifications:

1. When said Googler swings into a thread where people are just having a fair discussion and is all "you can't say that about D*shboard Confes*sional, C*ris Carav*s is a GENIUS an u r all jealous" then said Googler is fair game
1a. this is why it was fair to crack off a few one-liners on the Killing Joke: Classic or Dud thread

2. When said Googler enters as if to join the discussion but refuses to follow the discussion where it's going, sticking ardently to his/her original point of entry, then the thread is justified in opening fire
2a. everybody who's ever had to hear me drone on uninformedly about dance music may now open fire

3. it's always wrong to be completely callous of course but a keen-minded Googler ought to be able to roll with a slight punch or two I think

4. I am oversensitive about this question for personal reasons having to do with why I now spell my name with zeroes, ones and threes

J0hn Darn13ll3 (J0hn Darn13ll3), Sunday, 5 January 2003 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

It depends, I think. In most cases though, I have to say that most of the googlers seem to have no interest in debate or thinking in terms of the group dynamic, it's usually someting like: "U R ALL FAGS FOR HATING DANZIG GLEN IZ MY GOD!". In cases like that I think the googlers are practically asking for people to have a little fun at the googler's expense.

Nicole (Nicole), Sunday, 5 January 2003 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

be that as it may it is clearly the case that U R ALL FAGS FOR HATING DANZIG OMG HE IS SOOOOO MUCH KEWLER THAN YOU fuX0rzzzzzzzzz

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 5 January 2003 05:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it okay to be cruel to Danzig?

Nicole (Nicole), Sunday, 5 January 2003 05:30 (twenty-two years ago)

It's my understanding that you can make good money being cruel to Danzig

J0hn Darn13ll3 (J0hn Darn13ll3), Sunday, 5 January 2003 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Or selling him your blood-filled house.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 5 January 2003 06:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently he was very concerned about people going through his garbage in LA. Or maybe someone I knew went through his garbage, I forget which.

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 5 January 2003 06:09 (twenty-two years ago)

So then his concern was justified.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 5 January 2003 07:01 (twenty-two years ago)

DMB Thread reprazent.

one month passes...
Again, I'll add that it's ironic how often we slag off on "the Googlers" when many of us found ILX via Google, ourselves. Of course, I haven't been here from the beginning, so I don't know what it was like to go from only 10 people on the board (who saw each other at the pub every night) to the teeming millions that currently hang out here. Does it seem like there are too many of us, sometimes?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 August 2003 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you misunderstand ILM's beginings.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 29 August 2003 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but most Googlers here who are now regulars didn't just say something imflammatory and then run away going "tee hee hee" (as Nicole pointed out above) when we first found this place.

I'll admit, though, I should take a few steps back whenever someone who googled here tries to enter with his or her points on a debate and not slam him or her for not understanding something that, while VERY established on ILX, is not so established in her background.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 29 August 2003 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

(ahem, "his or her" background)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 29 August 2003 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Noodles, I was exaggerating, of course.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 August 2003 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, I think J0hn is mostly OTM on this thread.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 August 2003 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I have pictures of four of my friends performing ritual witccraft with a Mr. T doll on Danzig's driveway. In the middle, Glen came out looking for the pizza guy. He was not interested.

J (Jay), Friday, 29 August 2003 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

there's your next ep of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, right there.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 29 August 2003 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

fair game. fuck em! i don't normally bother to do it myself but.

duane (24 hour troubleshooter), Saturday, 30 August 2003 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i wonder why you all assume that new people have googled here. there are other routes.

personally, a friend of mine told me that i should check it out. he said that there were many intelligent and like minded people discussing things that i would find interesting.

perhaps i gave his opinion too much weight. from what i have read, there is an element of constant insults and ravenous criticism that tends to destroy any meaningful discourse that could occur.

or perhaps its just an old boys'club mentality. its hard determine if you all simply want to close the doors to outsiders all together, or if you want to bat at them as a cat does a mouse.

i find this unfortunate because of what i had hoped this forum would be about. if i am mistaken, please let me know. i don't intend this post to be an insult or a challenge of any sort, i am truly curious.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Saturday, 30 August 2003 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

it's all Simon Reynolds' fault.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Saturday, 30 August 2003 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Meaningful discourse isn't the only thing that goes on here, thank goodness. I mean I love me some meaningful discourse, but it's only one way to interact with people, and constant insults and ravenous criticism (and sophomoric sex jokes, let's not forget that) are also great.

I'd say give it another month to six weeks and then decide. ILE goes through phases, and phases within phases, and phases about people talking about phases, and phases about phrases like "Ph4y's is" and "fazes," and crazes like mazes, the yayses and nayses. It comes around, it goes around, some people get off the bus, some people get on. Maybe you'll end up judging it by a good day, maybe you'll end up judging it by a bad one. Either is probably a bit off.

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 30 August 2003 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)
