Pete's fillums of the year! Yay!

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 5 January 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I've seen 7.

Graham (graham), Sunday, 5 January 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

No "Ghost Ship" - Pete is mad.

Graham - how many did you like of the 7? I like 3. Of the 23 I've seen, I liked 14.

dwh (dwh), Sunday, 5 January 2003 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I've seen 11. The Eye was great, probably my fave film after Spiderman. Triple X, is a million times better than that Bond film.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 5 January 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Saw 8, liked 7.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Sunday, 5 January 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Ghost Ship ain't out yet is it?

I liked most of the ones I've seen, probably with the exception of die another day. No Guru though?

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 5 January 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I went to see The Eye today at The World's Smallest Cinema (in Nottingham) and the Projection machine broke.

Yeah, that's right Jel, it isn't out yet, but the trailers alone are enough to justify its inclusion.

dwh (dwh), Sunday, 5 January 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked 6 of the 7. I'll make a list of all the films I've seen this year I think.

Graham (graham), Sunday, 5 January 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

'Mulholland Drive' reminded me of 'The Abyss', in that by completely throwing all rules of film plotting out the window they stumbled on a narrative trajectory that more closely resembles life-as-we-know-it. Of course, whether or not you want to spend three hours watching something that resembles whatever you're trying to get away from depends on a)what it is you actually want from film b)how good the words/pix/flesh etc is at maintaining interest from the escaping from escapism. "yr body will remember" but u still can't go home. (Aw shit, I was thinking about 'Lost Highway' there - anyone else see 'MD' as a bit of a retreat from that one?)

dave q, Sunday, 5 January 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Only seen 3 of these, so far. (What to say? I've not had much time to sit in a darkened room;>)Most of his choices are spot-on. Gotta say I admire Pete's stamina in seeing all these. However, can't help being being scared he'll lose his eyesight.....

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Sunday, 5 January 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I've only seen one of them! I've seen about twenty films in the cinema this year besides The Royal Tenenbaums, but half of them were old and most of the rest haven't had a release here yet, if they ever will. A substantial majority were oriental. Still, I enjoyed reading Pete's piece.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 5 January 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Pete's piece, as ever (ie the Spider piece and his ILx posts), was great.

I'd really love to do a "Top 6 Video-Games of The Year" but that might expand the remit of FT beyond a reasonable ken. I'm so keyed up to write it too.

dwh (dwh), Sunday, 5 January 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

no cq?

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 5 January 2003 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Ghost Ship ain't out yet. Did the projector actually break in your viewing of The Eye? Bcause if it did it in the first twenty seconds, then it didn't.... (ie did you get to see the end of it?)

Pete (Pete), Monday, 6 January 2003 10:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think it's watching too many films that's threatening Pete's eyesight.

(I saw 3 and a half of his choices by the way. Oh yeah Pete I finally remembered the tenth (and worst) film I saw in 2002 - Attack of the arsing Clones.)

Tom (Groke), Monday, 6 January 2003 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn those Iraqui cats.

Attack Of The Arsing Clones in not as bad as 28 Days Later shockah.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 6 January 2003 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Pete - lovely to see that prose style is still there. Honed on pieces of paper on my door at Uni, that was...... ;o)

SittingPretty, Monday, 6 January 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Saw 11 of those. Do I win some sort of prize??

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 6 January 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

What kind of prize would be commensurate? I could probably send the winner a copy of Human Traffic. Or a dartboard - I've got loads of them.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 6 January 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the movies on the list that I saw so I think I should use the rest them as a To Do list.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 6 January 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

really pete? Dartboard you say. I predict that I saw none of them, as i only went to see about three films last year

chris (chris), Monday, 6 January 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this some Delboyesque job lot of dartboards Pete?

Tom (Groke), Monday, 6 January 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

dammit, I saw two, but only one at the cinema.

chris (chris), Monday, 6 January 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Things I saw this year (there's a couple missing):
Monsters Inc. - Musical bit - great. rest = OK
The Royal Tenenbaums - Need to see again
Queen Of The Damned - [ILE response]
Crossroads - I cried during it.
24 Hour Party People - rub
Scooby Doo - A few really good bits
The Guru - OK
A Walk To Remember - Fantastic
Hablo Con Ella - Lovely
Shakti: The Power - v.good
Signs - kind of OK, maybe
Slap Her, She's French - I larfed
Powerpuff Girls - Too stretched, but otherwise good
28 Days Later - Rub
Donnie Darko - Good
Anita And Me - Fabulous
Enough - Really good
LotR: TTT - Need to see the first one
Dirty Pretty Things - Alright

Graham (graham), Monday, 6 January 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris - if I had a reason to give you a gift over the next week you could certainly have one - but I wouldn't want to spoil the surprise.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 6 January 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry to be negative but my little eye was about the worst fillum i've ever seen at the pics. when the lights came up the whole audience seemed embarrased. however, i'm not the world's biggest film bugger so never mind me. the rest of the piece was cool.

michael wells (michael w.), Monday, 6 January 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I assume you didn't see 28 Days Later then.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i did not.

michael wells (michael w.), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Lucky, lucky you.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

it's funny you should say that as my gf chose my little eye and because of this when she suggested 28 days later i said "no way".

michael wells (michael w.), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Of the British DV horror movies last year one is patently superior. Though The Eye beats them both.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 6 January 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah Pete - the projector broke down before it even got to starting, we got a refund and a free ticket so I'm going to see it tomorrow. Only 22 (!!) seats in that cinema.

dwh (dwh), Monday, 6 January 2003 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I've only seen Tenenbaums, Mulholland Drive and Atanarjuat, which I didn't like as much as anyone else I know who saw it - it lasted about an hour too long and the cheap-looking photography was distracting.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 6 January 2003 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

How could I forget Swimfan??? Beast film starring Anna ever.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 9 January 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

they really ought to make more of those beast films

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 9 January 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Attack of the Arsing Clones wasn't even interesting enough to be bad, it was really just a "who cares?" kind of movie.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 9 January 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

>>> DV horror movies

= Attack of the Cockfarmers from Cork?

the pinefox, Thursday, 9 January 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey dwh, have you seen The Eye yet. Did the projector break down again?

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 9 January 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Was 28 Days later than Sandra Bullock movie where she's in rehab? Or was that 28 Days?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 9 January 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

s. bullock eaten by zombies movie now!

zebedee, Thursday, 9 January 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha, Pete, NO, we got really lazy on Tuesday and Wednesday and then realised on Thursday the complimentary tickets expired and The Eye is no longer being shown; I suspect I'll have to wait for DVD release.

dwh (dwh), Friday, 10 January 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

What did you think of Panic Room, Pete?

dwh (dwh), Friday, 10 January 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Panic Room was a good little thriller which - beyond its rather nice opening titles was a nice little low budget film puffed up to ridiculously expensive levels. It left pretty little mark on me in the long run - enjoyable but I took nothing away (including the memory of enjoying it that much).

Pete (Pete), Monday, 13 January 2003 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

four months pass...
i cant believe so many people liked spiderman.
it was awful. gratuitous wet t shirt moments aside
[sadly memorable but i have only just evolved from apehood]
it was boring and regressive; man needed to save woman. then cannot allow emotions because they are his weakness type crud.

also it featured the walking husk toby maguire.
where did willem dafoe's career go?

also i thought royal tennebaums gets less clever and more fun on second viewing. so give it another go.

thanks for writing the list though.
