This is one of my favorite movies. HOWEVER does anyone else agree with me that it'd be way better, and easily the greatest movie in history, if it ended WITHOUT the "where are they now" synopsis at the end?

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 6 January 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Especially strange considering there was a sequel. The climax of the film is pretty great though. As is the car vs. train chase. And the subway station scene where they keep stepping on and off the car.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 6 January 2003 06:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Fantastic movie.... maybe they put that bit at the end cuz they were real people? I chalk it up to one of those wonky old '60s stylistic things that don't age well. I'm sure CGI will look just as shitty in 35 years.

Aaron W, Monday, 6 January 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

But is the car chase as unplanned and real as they say? I've seen reference to it being so, and also seen it referred to as 'reputedly' unplanned and real. Anyone know?

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 6 January 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think it suffers from that Ally. I think it's flawless as is (the best meta-part: that 30 minutes will pass without dialogue)... Hackman is incredible, as is old Roy. You can almost see my old house near Coney Island in the train/car chase.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually just picked this up (and the sequel) used on DVD -- had always wanted to see it!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought this was going to be a "Country Connections" thread

I don't think it was totally unplanned, but it wasn't in the script and they sort of made it up as they went along. I seem to recall the director getting interviewed saying it was originally going to just be a regular car chase but those had been done to death and they wanted to out-do all the other chase scenes.

Aaron W, Monday, 6 January 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I love it when I forget I started threads. I know re: sequel and re: real events, but it's a movie, you don't need to be truthful to the real events. It'd be ambiguous and creepy - you wouldn't know who got shot. AND YES THAT'S A SPOILER BUT IT'S A 30 YEAR OLD MOVIE, PEOPLE. Maybe Gene Hackman dies, maybe the bad guy, maybe nobody, maybe nothing happened at all but it'd be way freakier that way.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 19 January 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Scarface was a better movie. Al Pacino is greater than stinky ol' Gene Hackman.

heh

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 19 January 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Eh? EH? EH? GINA?!

You can't fucking get Scarface anywhere though.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 19 January 2003 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I got Scarface at my house

You ever pick yr feet in Poughkeepsie?

Commentary is GREAT on FC but nothing beats John Milius & Arnold back+forthing over Conan The Barb

Tom Millar (Millar), Sunday, 19 January 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Supposedly they're putting Scarface back on sale like this year, but I ain't heard anything but rumor yet. It pisses me off, I mean I seen Scarface DVD on EBay for like $100!!!

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 19 January 2003 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

REALLY? Hmm, don't watch it that much, hmm, hmmm

Tom Millar (Millar), Sunday, 19 January 2003 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Take a look, this is Amazon's marketplace - $60 is the cheapest.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 19 January 2003 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

(I'd be willing to buy it for $25)

A little bit of a revive here -- as mentioned above, had picked this up a while back, finally sat down and watched it tonight for the first time. Very very good film indeed -- I think Ally's right to an extent regarding how the synopsis throws things off a bit at the end, but even knowing there's a sequel (admittedly the original audience wouldn't have known) it's still a strange and striking conclusion, and in ways even knowing what happened -- whatever it was -- still leaves a great question mark. I think that has to go down in large part to Don Ellis's score -- while I initially thought it was a touch strident thanks to the opening credits, his use of extremely high strings, reverb and more really all came together beautifully at the end.

The editing is something I noticed throughout the film as well, very disorienting without losing the thread of the story (and I thoroughly appreciated how many details weren't spelled out but were left for an aware audience to deduce or create). Pity about the blood when it appeared, though, it all looked fake.

Fave realization via the BBC documentary -- he, that was Eddie Egan, the prototype for Popeye Doyle, actually playing Popeye's boss! Did a pretty job too, I had thought it was just a random character actor.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 April 2003 06:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't seen this for years, but I remember really liking it. Gene Hackman rules.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Sunday, 6 April 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Scheider's prototype also plays a small role. The commentary is full of great tidbits.

Millar (Millar), Monday, 7 April 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I caught that bit about Scheider's character in Friedkin's commentary today, as well as one of the documentaries -- I like how the guy actually ended up becoming a film producer himself! Egan was the better actor, though. ;-)

Friedkin on wanting Jackie Gleason for Doyle, and shooting the chase with no warning or closings of NY streets:

I wanted Gleason because the real cop was a heavy set Irish guy that you’d call Black Irish, dark and moody. That was the real guy, Eddie Egan. Gleason was closest to that, but the studio would have none of it. We went through many other stars until we finally reluctantly agreed to Gene Hackman when we were out of time and Zanuck kept calling the producer and me saying you better set this picture now because I’ll be fired before you start shooting. So reluctantly we went with Gene. One of the great actors in the history of American film, who was not my first, second or tenth choice for that part. So I guess the other thing about the 70s was, there was just a ton of pure luck.

How high did this finish in the action-film poll? Not my genre.

Saw it for the third or fourth time tonight. Great look, at least three or four famous moments, performances are fine, or they at least don't get in the way. But I like Marathon Man and The Taking of Pelham One Two Three a lot more. If I'd had an Academy Award ballot, I would have voted for The Last Picture Show. Still need to see the sequel.

Disagree with the original post about the footnotes at the end being a mistake. They seem crucial to the film's point.

clemenza, Saturday, 26 March 2016 04:08 (nine years ago)

"Hey! HAIRCUT!" still one of my all-time faves.

strap in for this excellent feature on the Blu-Rays that have been released. i had no idea there's actually now a pretty decent one, the original BR having been kicked to death by all and sundry, including seemingly Freidkin himself despite it being (mostly) his fault!

Superb theme.

I realise there isn't the mainstream attention span out there for some of the scenes in this movie these days but I found myself loving the slow brew and the score keeps it ticking along just right (a few incidental vamps aside).

Highlights: the car stripping scene, the stakeout scene outside the restaurant in the New York cold, the step in-out-in-out of the train.

Hackman obv kills it, but I really think Scheider shines here too. I'd be inclined to say he deserved a best supporting Oscar too but I haven't seen 'The Last Picture Show'.

And yeah the "where are they now" synopsis at the end is the only real disappointment here. Need to find a copy of the sequel (which I have no expectations for).

Has anyone seen the 80s TV movie?

I didn't know anything about it but I've found a download link if you're interested.

I’ll uh wait for others to report back I think

I only learned of its existence the other day. Apparently it was meant as a pilot but never got picked up

coetzee.cx (wins), Sunday, 30 September 2018 08:25 (seven years ago)

i love the first FC flick, it's basically got all of Friedkin's often awe-inspiring bleakness wrapped up in an Oscar bait cop film.

FC2 is a really strange one, I need to see it again. When I first viewed it, it completely threw me off. I didn't like it, but maybe i could like it more now years later.

omar little, Tuesday, 2 October 2018 16:32 (seven years ago)

I really do love Don Ellis' music in this. The sound of rotten trash cans in pollution-misted streets.

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Tuesday, 2 October 2018 16:34 (seven years ago)

Don Ellis' music is spine-chilling, never more so than in the closing credits. It evokes a bleak feeling and a rage that no doubt consumes Popeye until the end of the sequel. I watch this and Mean Streets and feel cheated that I was born to late experience the "real" New York - whilst admitting to myself that I'd be scared as hell.

Daf, Tuesday, 2 October 2018 20:06 (seven years ago)

Holy smokes Deems. The Seven-Ups car chase has ended(!), I have paused, and I am here to say goddarn it that might be my favourite car chase ever (though the cops did demonstrate how not to set up a roadblock 101).

Weird. Popeye is not meant to be an admirable character in my view. He is, ironically due to the fact that he is a narcotics officer, an addict—addicted to the chase. His life is an absolute mess.

The proper question is, how has armond white's opinion of this movie changed now that the discourse involves this?

omar little, Tuesday, 6 June 2023 19:35 (two years ago)

Life Is Beautiful was garbage. Il Conformista was never nominated Best Picture of the Year but it was easily superior to either Patton or The French Connection.
