i want to buy a tie.

not for work, but for dressing cool and going out and stuff. (yeah, in that electroclash/indie boy style, so shoot me), anyway, where are has got cool ties at the moment?

gareth (gareth), Monday, 6 January 2003 09:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha! I have to wear a tie for the first time in a decade today! I have to be photgraphed at work by a magazine and they suggested jacket and tie. I have come to work with neither!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 6 January 2003 10:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Yohji Yamamoto!

Mary (Mary), Monday, 6 January 2003 13:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Pop Boutique, Monmouth St, or just monmouth street in general. We like the Yohji Yamamoto suggestion though and their sale is on now.

Ed (dali), Monday, 6 January 2003 13:54 (twenty-three years ago)

electroclash indie boy, shoot me!

erik, Monday, 6 January 2003 14:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Banana Republic has got some cool ties.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 6 January 2003 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

i dont like pop boutique much, the ties are not good there

so, yamamoto, where can i get?

gareth (gareth), Monday, 6 January 2003 14:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Store on conduit street, past the boundary between actual and aspirational shopping (Regent St). Could also try Selfridges or Liberty.

Ed (dali), Monday, 6 January 2003 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

At the Yohji Yamamato boutique of course!

Mary (Mary), Monday, 6 January 2003 15:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just KNEW this was going to be another Avril thread.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Snarf. (Ties = creations of the devil. To be occasionally suffered, no more.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Ties are most cute. Especially when just peeking out of the neck of a sweater. Unfortunately I don't think this is the look Gareth will be going for.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Keep in mind my bias is largely because ties seem to do little but cause strangulation in combination with wearing that damned top button closed on your shirt. I refuse to perish for fashion.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

wearing a tie to look cool and go out

is this a london thing?

michael wells (michael w.), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Is Gareth going for the Interpol look, to attract stylish 'n' sexy 20something trash girls?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:49 (twenty-three years ago)

none of those shirts are brown. and i dont do suit jackets.

gareth (gareth), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

they look like Kraftwerk

erik, Monday, 6 January 2003 16:51 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm imagining you looking like a brat packer or something. how can this look good?

michael wells (michael w.), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

no michael, not like that!

its difficult to explain, i have a picture in my head, but its not like the above

gareth (gareth), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

will you wear your sunglasses at night, too?

michael wells (michael w.), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

ha, the miami vice look?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:59 (twenty-three years ago)

more boys should wear ties in public

erik, Monday, 6 January 2003 17:02 (twenty-three years ago)

ha, the miami vice look?

Is there such a thing as a pastel brown?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:02 (twenty-three years ago)

that would be the brown that you find in Neapolitan ice cream wouldn't it?

chris (chris), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:05 (twenty-three years ago)

biege !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:05 (twenty-three years ago)

that's it Chris, the Neapolitan look

that's brown shirt hanging outside stylish white Italian slacks with strawberry red tie !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:08 (twenty-three years ago)

WOW! can you imagine! that would be fabulous. Or maybe white tie and red slacks. and white loafers.

chris (chris), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:09 (twenty-three years ago)

:(

gareth (gareth), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:10 (twenty-three years ago)

you love it Gareth, don't deny it. You could wear a white flat cap too, you'd be the heppest cat on the block.

chris (chris), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:12 (twenty-three years ago)

that's it between me and Chris - we have defined THE Neapolitan style look for 2003 !

i guarantee the trash chicks will go4that look !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Go on Gareth, we dare you.

chris (chris), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:21 (twenty-three years ago)

NHL and NFL games should not be allowed to end in "ties." Sports are about winning and losing.

Have any wars ended in ties?

felicity (felicity), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Gareth I think you may have to abandon brown for ties, or you'll look like a geography teacher.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:44 (twenty-three years ago)

why are you all being so cruel to me?

has your love for me dried up?

:(

gareth (gareth), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't let Dan get hold of that one.

It wasn't cruel, it was friendly advice. You don't look like a geography teacher at the moment.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:47 (twenty-three years ago)

(Drat, foiled again.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:48 (twenty-three years ago)

...and to finish off the pulling factor style look: DJ GIGOLO RECORDS' PANTS

Sorry, but I have just seen the news article ! I couldn't resist !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Remove the apostrophe and youhave the makings of a headline for the ages.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:52 (twenty-three years ago)

YOu had no tie lust on saturday, where has this sprung from, do you want to look like a hive?

Ed (dali), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I think he wants to wear with a blazer and go to school disco.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Anna, if anything we, as a group, as his friends, haven't been cruel enough on Gareth. Are we going to let Gareth do this to himself?

Graham (graham), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:55 (twenty-three years ago)

What about the rug?

Ed (dali), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:56 (twenty-three years ago)

but Mary, Gareth knows Schooldisco.com is totally naff !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Mary wants someone to take her to School Disco.

rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:58 (twenty-three years ago)

After School Club is a totally different matter though ;-)

Anna (Anna), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Post clash there. Don't go to either - especially not schooldisco.com. I was made to go once and it was hellish, full of drunken stockbrokers using chat up lines like:
'How are you?'
'Fine'
'Oh, I can see you're fine, I was asking how you were.'

Anna (Anna), Monday, 6 January 2003 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

we have to go to After School Club! what is it?

felicity (felicity), Monday, 6 January 2003 18:04 (twenty-three years ago)

It's After Skool Club

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 6 January 2003 18:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I always get that wrong and DJ Martian always corrects me.

After SKOOL Club - indie disco Gareth is ashamed of going to, so I have to tease him about.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 6 January 2003 18:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't spell AGAIN too it's: After Skool Klub

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 6 January 2003 18:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn, bugger, blast etc.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 6 January 2003 18:11 (twenty-three years ago)

but music policy wise there is some cross-over with Trash, from looking at the website !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 6 January 2003 18:12 (twenty-three years ago)

HA HA, getting hit on by drunken stockbrokers would be, like, a step UP from the creepy male attention I've been getting lately.

But After Skool Klub means young indie boys, Mary and felicity!

rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 6 January 2003 18:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I do believe there's a kompakt labelnight whilst you're here.

Ed (dali), Monday, 6 January 2003 18:12 (twenty-three years ago)

What's kompact labelnight?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 6 January 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Last tie I bought: red, from the local charity shop, 99p.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 6 January 2003 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Kompakt labelnight = indie kids at German recycling stands chucking labels off jars into compactors to the strains of St. Etienne.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 6 January 2003 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I bought some ties in a school uniform shop, but I lost one and had to abandon the other because it made me look like I was some kind of Icarus Line groupie. And that's the end of my story.

Ferg (Ferg), Monday, 6 January 2003 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

See, I gave up wearing ties because of Avril. But they cn stil look good on boys. (sorry, that should be 'boiz')

Anna (Anna), Monday, 6 January 2003 20:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Ties look good on forests?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 6 January 2003 20:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't worn a tie this century.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 6 January 2003 20:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Ties look good on forests?

I dunno, would they?

http://i.imdb.com/Photos/Ss/0109830/1-2.jpg

felicity (felicity), Monday, 6 January 2003 20:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Kompactlabel nite sounds far out, if Dan's description is indeed spot on. I bought a clip on tie at a school uniform shop in the Bronx, it is my Gilmore Girls look but the staff encouraged me to get a real tie and not the little tv tie that I was so eyeing...

Mary (Mary), Monday, 6 January 2003 20:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Clip ons are the way to go. I still don't know how to tie a tie!!

brg30 (brg30), Monday, 6 January 2003 23:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I wore a tie on NYear's Eve but it was black against a black shirt and covered almost all the way up by my jacket so I doubt anyone even noticed. it was a good look though, apparently. everybody's like "YOU clean up well" and i'm like "you oughta see me get dirty!" wahey

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 00:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Koompakt - German bleep/minimal/dubby techno. cf chain reaction, mille plateaux and some tresor.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 01:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to occasionally wear a skinny tie/jacket combo out, but in the last year or so it's become so big among kids 15 years my junior that I'd be embarassed to now.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 02:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Once you start collecting ties its really really hard to stop. I think the teens in ties thing is going to pass soon. Ride it out and keep wearing ties.

ducklingmonster, Tuesday, 7 January 2003 02:56 (twenty-three years ago)

It's easy to make your own ties. Just get a piece of fabric and cut it appropriately. Try different widths, lengths, and types of fabric.
It's fun for the kids.

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 03:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I took a picture of myself wearing a tie for the new what do you look like thread. Yay me.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 06:05 (twenty-three years ago)

my tie always ends up in my soup

erik, Tuesday, 7 January 2003 13:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought that was your fly?

chris (chris), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 13:24 (twenty-three years ago)

they're certainly not my balls!

erik, Tuesday, 7 January 2003 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

three months pass...
i was wearing ties and broken jackets years ago.. it's within days of being out of fashion. the bastards! i'm quite serious.

matthew james (matthew james), Friday, 25 April 2003 22:19 (twenty-three years ago)

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 26 April 2003 04:26 (twenty-three years ago)

other than the real cool time i got my tie caught in a paper shredder at work i always felt like a grown up man in one.

brian badword (badwords), Saturday, 26 April 2003 05:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I've made it an ambition to never wear a tie except at weddings (and even then, it's a toss-up), much to the consternation of everyone I've ever dated. I just can't stand em, and no matter how long I have one on, I can't lose that constant awareness of wearing a tie.

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 26 April 2003 05:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I had to wear a tie with my school uniform in Catholic school, so I avoided them for a long time. Now I mostly do because fuck, I'm not Avril Lavigne.

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 26 April 2003 05:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Part of my loathing of ties comes from my rarely-admitted Alex P Keaton phase in fifth grade, about which we shall say no more.

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 26 April 2003 05:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, for awhile he was sorta hot

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 26 April 2003 05:59 (twenty-three years ago)

That wasn't the nature of the phase, though -- that would be more like my Brad Pitt phase, when he was on the brief-lived Fox drama Glory Days (I took my middle name from his character). This was more of a "money money money, look at me in my dad's suit from a decade ago" phase. I signed my last name with a dollar sign at the end (it ended with an "s" at the time). I think there is nothing I look back on with more befuddlement.

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 26 April 2003 06:02 (twenty-three years ago)

What do you think of the APC tie, Gareth?

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 26 April 2003 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

And let's talk about women's ties! How do you get the nice ones that aren't so long, yet aren't school uniform clip ons?

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 26 April 2003 16:08 (twenty-three years ago)

She always has really nice ties

the pinefox, Monday, 13 October 2008 15:12 (seventeen years ago)

I would like a wide short tie for women that is sort of scarf like. I may be imagining that this sort of thing exists. In black or grey, and if grey of heavy fabric and if black of silk with a jacquard pattern.

youn, Monday, 13 October 2008 23:22 (seventeen years ago)

i got a nice houndstooth tie, a bit like this but with a finer print:
