How's the job front?

I've been out of a full time job now for over a year. I thought it might get better in the 2003 hiring season, but I guess not. Is it just me, or does it seem like everyone is asking for a hell of a lot these days and offering very little? I keep seeing ads for positions that require some very odd qualifications: graphic design positions which require a phD (no shit, I saw this for a job as a trial graphics designer and a cosmetics designer).

Or how about the jobs that require 5 programming languages in addition to every application ever invented and offer a wage of $23 per hour to $33,000 per year?

Have any of you found yourselves in new slave labor jobs?
What's the point? I could've avoided college and become a mailman and be making more than I am today. I know, I know, it's only temporary. It's lasting long enough for me to consider filing bankruptcy and moving to Canada, though!

Scaredy, where are you?

Seeing as it's crunchtime, I've been seriously pounding the pavement, or rather, the online recruitment services... there are actually starting to be jobs advertised for what I do (data management and light analysis) which is heartening. But god knows how many other people there are applying for them... doesn't help that I've been effectively out of the jobs market for nearly 2 years at this point.

i'm worried i won't get another job in graphic/web design, partly cos its all gone too techy and my tiny artistic brain can't cope

I agree Jel 100%. My friend is a plumber and its disgusting how much money he makes. About $40,000 more than me.

My niece makes twice as much as I do working on the assembly line for GM. I think she finished high school.

Although that would make sense considering my degree is in Economics.

Two more people from our content team were eliminated today. We've gone from seven to four in three weeks, and for the first time in three years, I'm terrified about my job security. Or lack thereof...

i am temping, no health insurance or paid leave of any sort, and my contract is up 1 may. all my jobs have been in content or community so i feel like my skills are really nebulous ... although right now i'm really using my 'cut' and 'paste' skills well.

I've learned to live on $800-$1000 US a month. Then again I don't live ina metro area.

No positions removed at my spot (but that's the state bureaucracy for you); however, major hiring freeze and more skullduggery planned due to the California budget crunch. Admittedly the departure of three people over the past three months has helped in a perverse way, though the flipside is we're not getting them replaced any time soon...
