Apart from the computer + printer/scanner/fax/copier thing, I have:

A mug of steaming hot coffee

A stapler - it's a see-through one, so you can watch all the cogs and levers work. Brilliant.

Various CDs - ones containing work, some music ones, and my 'Brush up on your spoken Welsh' one, which is part of a New Year's Resolution

A Spanish/English dictionary

Diary. A4 size. Black leather.

A small terracotta plant pot which, a long time ago, I sprayed with silver paint and stuck glass beads all over. This is used as a pen holder, and has a dwindling supply of biros in it because other people keep nicking them, plus an ink pen, two pencils, and a yellow highlighter pen.

A pile of paperwork - invoices, property inventories, dilapidations reports and bank statements - which I am hoping will somehow file themselves if I just ignore them long enough.

One gold earring. I seem to have lost the other one. Bugger.

an XML Bible

In the beginning, the earth was without code and void. Then God said "let there be code!" and there was code. On the first day, God created the element and the entity. On the second day, he said "let there be a divide separating the parsing code from the non-parsing code". And he called the divide the Document Type Definition. On the third day, God said "let the elements have attributes, each according to their kind".

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Like Nicholson Baker's 'The Mezzanine', this thread reveals the kinetic truth value of unexamined clutter. Swinging the neglected straight to centre screen, we get a rush of recognition, a sense that this, rather than great romantic-humanist themes or tales of derring-do, is the essence of reality.

I would rather see photos of the clutter than read descriptions of it, though. I would draw highly prejudicial pictures of each person much quicker. I would know a great deal about their nationality, social class, type of humour, degree of aesthetic-mindedness, Freudian psychosexual type and so on after seeing such photos.

My answer: what desk? I am raked back on a mattress with a laptop.

archel, there is a woman who has an office directly across the hall from me who is never actually in it. meetings, i guess. she has a horse on her desk which she changes EVERY DAY. different day, different horse and always in the same position. its weird and facinating and made even more so by the fact that the office just seems deserted except for this one constant change.
