I have not come across nearly as many gay women as men. Why are they less visible, or are there just fewer of them?

Separatist lesbians shun male company and are therefore not visible
Femme lesbians are are invisibly lesbian
Butch lesbians are invisible

Also, content, coupled lesbians don't get out much.

mmmmm, while I agree with the basic proposition of this thread - that there seem to be more male homosexuals than lesbians - I know way more lesbians than male homosexuals. But this is too small a sample from which to generalise.

Obviously I can't generalise from my experience either because I live in Brighton. I know plenty of 'out' lesbians, though they're not all flagrant, granted. But then being 'out' doesn't have to mean 'telling everyone you meet that you are gay', does it?

As far as I remember there are only one or two specifically lesbian bars in the country, and they're all in London. I think there's a gay club in Glasgow that has a women-only night though; N. could lurk outside and count them or something.

But I knew that was a special enclave. I'm not really talking about spotting people 'being gay' in the street. It was more about people I come across in some social context (through work, friends, on telly if that counts) being openly gay.

I did not mean for it to be a 'Look - there's a lesbian, what about her?' session. Toraneko's post was the kind of thing I was after.

I've noticed that there seems to be alot more comic book stories about lesbians than about gay men; also, slightly more lesbian characters on TV/in the movies than homosexuals. Both of these factors may be more due to the fact that lesbianism between attractive women in fiction is a great way to pull in heterosexual male readers/viewers than anything else (I'm as guilty as anyone, I s'pose, tho really, it's not like any of the lesbians I've talked to about the subject are complaining)
