Usage Note: Irregardless is a word that many mistakenly believe to be correct usage in formal style, when in fact it is used chiefly in nonstandard speech or casual writing. Coined in the United States in the early 20th century, it has met with a blizzard of condemnation for being an improper yoking of irrespective and regardless and for the logical absurdity of combining the negative ir- prefix and -less suffix in a single term. Although one might reasonably argue that it is no different from words with redundant affixes like debone and unravel, it has been considered a blunder for decades and will probably continue to be so.

I like it. There's a nice metrical ring to it.

It has a much more triumphalist tone when used as an interjection to cut somebody off because it can end on an uptick like foreshadowing yr. VITAL POINT to come while regardless ends on a downbeat and makes you sound desperate.

Sterling is OTM. I always think of the stentorian tones of Mr. Louis Farrakhan when I hear this word. A kind of psuedo-erudition. Not unlike "as it were".

i'm guilty of using this myself quite a bit, and i like the fact that you can use made up words and people still know exactly what you're talking about.

"Don't you know, haven't you heard, irregardless, is not a word?" - lyrics of a band I used to be in, back in NYC, who are making me sign a "discretion clause" so I can't talk about them, but you know what, I haven't signed it yet, so I feel justified in quoting those lyrics.

This is one of the weird sides of "fame" - or at least getting your name in music papers. Every paranoid freak that you've ever worked with will appear out of the woodwork, trying to get you to sign things saying that you won't slag them off in public, when to be truthful, you hadn't thought about them in years, and the weird thing you have to sign just brings them to the front of your attention again.
