Are we scared?

Given rising gang/gun violence, the verging-on-recession economy, looming oil-inspired wars with Iraq, international terrorism and deadly incurable poison finds, are we scared yet? Should we be? Is someone going to stab me with a poisoned umbrella on the train from Dawlish to Exeter? Are we being set up to have a REALLY shitty year?

No

Patsy Kensit, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

if i was you i wouldn't treat me the way you do

(A lyric that i never quite settled in my mind was rubbish/silly/whatevah)

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes! I woke up the other day to some XFM nonce (I know I deserve it all) talking about troops mobilising in Iraq, got THE FEAR for most of the morning until I went to eat sossidge.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I always though "If I was you, I wouldn't treat me the way you do" was a classic lyric. In the projecting of himself (or herself in Kensit's vers) onto the other we are not negating the existence of the victim whose persona has been projected. It is literally if I was in your position and was going out with someone like me then I wouldn't be so bloody horrible.

Perfect sense.

Not scared.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

If we're scared the terrorists have won.

(isn';t that how it's supposed to go?)

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

No, the terrorists have only won if we're terrified. Scared is a promising sign for them though. Especially considering its our own governments which are scaring us.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

The Daily Mirror is doing its bit though!

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Having an AL-QAEDA POISON FACTORY on your doorstep = not scary. Realising the place you call home will forever more be known as a DINGY LONDON SUBURB = scary. And also shite.

The Daily Mirror scares the bejeezuz out of me.

didn't the mirror just do a "clever" it's-all-abt-the-oil-stupid anti-war collage for their front page?

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah Momus posted it (and it was discussed briefly) 3 quarters of the way down this thread The United States of whatever ?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

but was it real or just photoshop net stuff?

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess it was the cover of the Mirror, anyone confirm? I don't know.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

It was real - Monday's front cover. Though the joke's been around ages as Maura said.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

remember when this could have been funny? now it just seems prophetic.

maura (maura), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

fuck, i thought it was satellite photo of britain. i feel safer now i know that huge fuck-off skull and crossbones isn't tattood across the land.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

no need to be scared.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

If that skull really IS tattood across this green and pleasant land, then I am living in its mouth and I am scared of its teeth.

Other than that, not scared. British stoicism + sturdy understairs cupboard with good supply of gin means I shall be okay.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

oh no! i live on a crossbone! oh NO!

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Places which appear to be unaffected by THE DEATH are : anywhere north of Staffordshire, West Wales (St David's looks in the clear, and is a v nice place too), Cornwall (ahh! lovely Cornwall!) and the Isle of Wight. Just in case any of you are considering moving away from the skull/xbones ph34r.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i think we stopped taking this seriously now

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i dont like the fact that London is a bone-end....then again...
