Also, what are some good websites or travel books for visiting Australia? I'm probably going to buy the Rough Guide Australia book- have any of you used any others? I won't really get to meander too far away from the city if I go, sadly, although there's a slight possiblity I'll tack on a few days in Sydney or Melbourne on the way home. So, give me some advice- I know Ned at least should have a few words on this. ;- )

Go to Melbourne and ask everyone's advice. ;-) Toraneko is from Tasmania, where Hobart is, so I'd check with her! Also, get used to hyperparanoid customs people investigating EVERYTHING.

I stayed in youth hostels, which were okay. Hobart was nice for shopping, Port Arthur (where the convicts were sent) was interesting but I found it strangely eerie too - it had a very strange atmosphere. There's Richmond, which has The Oldest Bridge In Australia (wow); there's nothing much in Launceston; I vaguely remember some interesting place names such as "Bust-Me-Gall Creek". Hmm. The Franklin River was fantastic - great for white water rafting.
I found Tasmania seemed quite like the English countryside - lots of farmland/cows etc, and a lot greener than the rest of Australia. I was there for about four days, and frankly that was more than enough. You can drive right around the island in just a few hours. Like I say, it was a few years ago and I'm probably a bit out of touch.
