good move, he's back in his old neighbourhood so should feel at home and he can keep his head down for the rest of the season...I don't rate his England chances much given West Ham are a dead cert for the drop however, but Sven has shown support for Woodgate so who knows...

i heard a tabloid rumour that bowyer made some joke about sven and ulrika while at the dinner table with players and coaching staff, and his royal svenness took great offence to it.

I'm pleased he's not at Leeds anymore. I don't think he was doing LUFC any good at all.

heh. me thinks its roeder's last big buy before the sack.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i think its a good buy as far as west ham are concerned.

as far as both leeds and bowyer are concerned it is ridiculuos, only a matter of months since leeds could have got £9m and bowyer could have been at liverpool!

I hope that he forms a great all-England-international quartet across the middle with Cole, Carrick and Sinclair, and that Di Canio and Kanoute start knocking them in so that West Ham survive. I'm walking distance from the ground, and am adopting them as my second club.

out of the frying pan into the fire, then (both Leeds and West Ham having struggled for years to distance themselves from their old National Front connections)

robin carmody (robin carmody), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, but west ham have been rather more succesful in this?

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

they have indeed, AFAIK. this is the thing. there is an article by an Asian in the Guardian today who says he won't be able to bring himself to watch West Ham while Bowyer is playing for them ... however much is conjecture, it's fair to say that Bowyer is the sort of person who put Andrew Rosindell in Parliament.

hmm, while he may not be the nicest of people, he has had whatever is coming to him (whether you think it is enough or not is a separate question), and lets not forget, it was woodgate who got found guilty. i mean, we do believe in rehabilitation dont we? i dont know, as much as i dont have any time for bowyer, i think he deserves a fair crack of the whip at west ham.

if i was roeder, i would have bought him

There's little I loathe more than racism, but I thought there was little if any suggestion that the attack he was involved in was racially motivated. I wonder how many footballers are at least as racist as Bowyer, as far as I've seen any evidence? Loads, I suspect. If a manager decided to not sign any, he might be in trouble, sadly. I'd want more proof of Bowyer's attitudes before I'd say West Ham should have passed up a great bargain in playing terms.

bowyer would probably object to playing for england while johnny foreigner is in charge, anyway.

There's the incident in the Greenwich MacDonalds a few years back - it was said to simply be the rage of an angry young man annoyed in D-Fens stylee rage that he could only get breakfast instead of a burger. But all the staff were Asian IIRC. And there were apparently things said by Bowyer to them that didn't exactly relate to the menu. I also heard (supposition yes, potentially unfair yes, potentially illuminating yes) that his Dad helped the BNP in elections in Haringey.

I think at the very least, he's a thoroughly nasty piece of work; his stuff about quibbling over the fine Leeds were going to levy upon him after the trial, backing out of the Liverpool deal, only signing for six months (so in effect, it's a 6 month loan from Leeds to West Ham upon conclusion of which he's a free agent).
