what's the deal with Boyd Rice?

who is this Boyd Rice fellow? I know him as the nice man who sings on the Spell album with one of the women from Strawberry Switchblade, and apparently he is in the Church of Satan. and there was a story in Viz (or a Viz-style story in the NME) about him, which was funny.

but whenever his name is mentioned, it's always "Beware Boyd Rice! He is EVIL!". What kind of evil?

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't he the dude from NON? They're pretty evil-sounding. And I remember an album under his own name that was evil in a really funny way. Sorry I can't help more.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

is this just fodder for the "make a new variant thread" meme?

what's the deal with boiled rice?
what's the deal with Anneka Rice?
what's the deal with Dry Ice?
what's the deal with Tim Rice?

"ooh-isn't-National-Socialism-'interesting'-and-isn't-it-oh-so-outre-to-affect-fascist-sympathies" evil. "Doesn't-everybody-get-all-miffed-if-I-pretend-to-hate-Jews-but-refuse-to-actually-say-anything-outright" evil. "Too-dumb-for-actual-arts-communities-so-I'll-get-heralded-by-dillettantes" evil. That kind of evil.

this should be on ILM actually. he makes all this 'noise' type stuff I think (this from revding reviews and not listening to recs BTW).

he also has some 'controversial' views on stuff (race mainly) yawn.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, he posed, flashing knives, with a leader of the American Front (see Blood in the Face) but perhaps it was all in good fun, eh? From my p.o.v., he crosses the line that shouldn't be crossed. I don't know how serious he is about this stuff but he seems genuinely sympathetic to fascism in various forms.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I should really avoid posting about things I know nothing about. I remember the NON album I heard being instrumental, and the solo album just being misanthropic in general. But I have a really bad memory and probably only heard each of those albums once. So yeah, he probably is evil.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i like some NON but try to distance the art from the artist.

he fathered lisa suckdog carver's daughter.

gygax!, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

He also wrote the "let's hear it for violence against women" article for Answer Me!

he is a moron, one of those people who has read Celine on his own and afterwards concluded that he must be a genius because, well, he has read Celine

J0hn Darn13ll3 (J0hn Darn13ll3), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

this should be on ILM actually.

nerrrr, I'm not talking about his music.

I thought Lisa Carver's kid was a boy (named Wolfgang).

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm now intensely happy that I never actually investigated NON when I was in high school.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

indeed, or at any time

It'll be a happy day when that industrial pigfucker nursing home finally opens up.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

All this said, he does have one shining moment of glory, namely his vandalizing of the Lemon Grove lemon when still a teen. There's also the Taco Bell trick, but that was mean as opposed to quashing the filth that is small-town boosterism.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Boyd Rice has been around forever (more or less). His main project is called NON, which was started in the early 80's and was a major pioneer of the noise genre. Some NON is instrumental, some contains his spoken word non-sense. He released several albums under his own name, which all have his spoken word non-sense, and collaborated with many people in the "World Serpent" clique (death in june, coil, sol invictus, etc). He also has an obsession with 60's girl pop.

His politics (i.e. spoken word nonsense) are just to create a reaction, hence the misanthropic-nazi-satanist stuff which changes every few years. It has actually been toned down in recent years. Last time I checked his thing was the "Holy Blood, Holy Grail" type dealie.

Seek: Non - "Receive the flame", his interview by Bob Larson.
Destroy: Anything where he speaks with words.

He should just stick to pranks... like so many others should.

"Let's go tell senior citizens the buses aren't running. They've got nothing to do anyway. Heh heh heh."

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

you are correct and to make matters worse, i knew that. i have no idea why i wrote daughter.

gygax!, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

It's true - his chapter in Pranks was hilarious.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Kerry, I thought his chapter in pranks made him seem like a douche bag.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

''nerrrr, I'm not talking about his music.''

well, ILM isn't just abt the latest batch of releases y' know.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

On another note, I recently heard his voice on a television commercial for a playstation (and the like) game on the Ultimate Fighting Championship.....Yeah...lets stick to the Pranks ole' Boyd....capitalism and self promotion as a bad-ass fascist, however much a joke it REALLY is, just does not blend so well.....
