i'm a big fan of french filtered house c.1998 getup

also anything where they wore big dollar sign necklaces

minna (minna), Friday, 10 January 2003 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Dronerock and shoegazing. Oh, the endless parade of corduroy trousers, and 22,000 different kinds of stiped shirts...

kate, Friday, 10 January 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

There's an endless parade of corduroy trousers in my wardrobe

(for "wardrobe", read "scattered around my bedroom floor and on the spare side of the bed")

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 10 January 2003 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Heavy Metal in the eighties, Iron Maiden et al.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 10 January 2003 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

(nb: am not a shoegazer. except when shopping, ho ho ho)

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 10 January 2003 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I think that Freak-Beat circa '66 had the best fashion. Drainpipe pinstripe hipster trews, mixed with paisley or floral shirts with massive bows, all worn INCREDIBLY tight with Chelsea boots and back-combed mop-tops... YUM!

kate, Friday, 10 January 2003 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

dronerock and shoegazing clobber sounds like what everyone in fitzroy wears all the time! therefore filtered house is better because people actually got dressed up a bit. 80s metal qualifies as also good but the women used to wear big fat white socks with patent leather high heels which i don't like.
i do like chelsea boots though

minna (minna), Friday, 10 January 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Not the best example, but post-mod, pre-hippie, looking sharp... ROWR!

kate, Friday, 10 January 2003 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

can anyone remember the names of the fake pop bands in the 'music sounds better with you' video?

minna (minna), Friday, 10 January 2003 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate, I'd say the SFs in that photo were fairly straight mod.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 10 January 2003 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Though, country has some real wonderful stuff going on, especially back in the late 60s...

http://www.gramparsons.com/img/photo/gram_nudie.jpg

Where the FUCK did my copy of Sweetheart of the Rodeo go? Is that another album that just disappeared while I was on tour? I'm very upset by this.

Oh, and Tim, I know, that's why I said it was a bad example. I was googling for that photo of them in the floral shirts from Ogdens era, but couldn't find it, only found photos of the cover of Ogdens.

kate, Friday, 10 January 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, OK. I think the grebtest look ever was the look on the picture above...

Tim (Tim), Friday, 10 January 2003 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Flavor Flav's clock still hits me, man

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 10 January 2003 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just glad his clock was clean...

kate, Friday, 10 January 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

1960's Mod

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 10 January 2003 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm with Dr. C.

Worst = possibly 1980s mod though.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 10 January 2003 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

stiped shirts!!

mark s (mark s), Friday, 10 January 2003 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

is that what rem-like bands wear?

minna (minna), Friday, 10 January 2003 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

GRUNGE

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 10 January 2003 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Goth was the best.
Hair Metal the worst.
There is often a frighteningly thin line between the two.

fletrejet, Friday, 10 January 2003 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Really. There was a time when you could not tell LA Guns and Sisters of Mercy apart.

kate, Friday, 10 January 2003 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

New Romantics surely.

Or Slipknot.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 10 January 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Glam Rock.

My poor ankles.

Mooro (Mooro), Friday, 10 January 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

60s mod, definitely. You wouldn't see a bearded mod.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 10 January 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

the UK punk scene was def the most creative, combative and fun fashion trend. Mod was sharper but not to different than a general fashion trend of the era that didnt differ to greatly from what regular people wore.

best - the VW owners fearing 80's HIP HOP, adidas attitude hi, PHat gold chain, Chanel shellsuits.

Worst - Crusty my god it's a disgrace

james (james), Friday, 10 January 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm gonna say 70s-era funk...

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 10 January 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Nickalicious, sometimes you scare me... but in a kinda good way. :-)

kate, Friday, 10 January 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

C'mon, how can you deny the amazing fashionability and style of a full-grown man wearing a diaper and sunglasses?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 10 January 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

1960's mod girls - hornXOR!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 10 January 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

1980s mod parkas though: suX0R

Tim (Tim), Friday, 10 January 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Neue Deutsche Welle

http://www.ichwillspass.de/ndw/doraub.jpg

erik, Friday, 10 January 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that the cover of the new Belle and Sebastian single?

kate, Friday, 10 January 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Erik: is one of those people Andreas Dorau? Which one? I always meant to catch up with what he did after "Fred Vom Jupiter" but, er, never bothered.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 10 January 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

All those people look so wholesome and normal, except of course for that weird lookin' little bespectacled bugger on the right.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 10 January 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm actually honestly quiet fond of the fashion of the bebop movement, where you had crazies like Monk and Bird wearing 3-piece suits and lookin' suave-as-a-muthafucka.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 10 January 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Andreas is the junger mann in the middle, Tim.

erik, Friday, 10 January 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

He looks like a nice fellow, but I can't work out what's going on at the bottom of his trouser legs. Huge turn-ups? Two-tone strides? Half-mastage?

Tim (Tim), Friday, 10 January 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Andreas probably wears why I wear:

http://members.chello.nl/e.visser25/BowlingJas2.jpg

Ich bin ein Berliner

erik, Friday, 10 January 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

He is wearing Lederhosen with thick wooly socks, as one does.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 10 January 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

What did french house types wear? Robot suits?

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 10 January 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I like paisley and I like funk. I want these boots:

http://www.davidnathan.com/bettyd.gif

Kerry (dymaxia), Friday, 10 January 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

yes ronan, robot suits, mummie suits, dog masks and cool parkas

minna (minna), Friday, 10 January 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I find Kate's drone/shoe answer strangely compelling. And it's not just because I have all the T-shirts.

Nicole didn't mention New Romantics before Pete? I'm ashamed of you! Return all your Duran stuff now (or just give it to Ally).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 January 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

It's Steven Strange! I just couldn't bring myself to advocate that.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 10 January 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the skeletons the best! Their dance in Around The World is really great, I remember when the video was on MTV my brother was doing it and moving slowly down the hall. Later my mother was like "who made all these marks in the carpet". We were all mystified then it became clear it was Daft Punks fault. I'm not sure if this story really works for anyone else but if you know the dance I mean then maybe there's hope.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 10 January 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

It's Steven Strange! I just couldn't bring myself to advocate that.

The damned don't cry. Old Visage fans, possibly another story (and hey, I was listening to the first album the other day!).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 January 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

ronan i understand! i once put grubby handprints on someone's wall during an out of control dancing spell, i think it was prince's fault for that one

minna (minna), Friday, 10 January 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Minna: did we really ask basically the same question at the same time?

What Musicians Wear

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 10 January 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

haha looks like it nabibsco. i didn't see yours there tho, honest! else i would have ceased and desisted. (and given my 20 cents worth to yrs too)

minna (minna), Friday, 10 January 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

er nabi[-b]sco.

minna (minna), Friday, 10 January 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, wait, it's certainly whatever movement you consider these guys part of...

http://www.pigsflycd.com/devo.jpg

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 10 January 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Old proper country (not the country rock Kate cites) as epitomised by middle aged duo Carl and Pearl Butler in their matching pink rhinestone trouser suits. Or Louis Prima wearing golf-chic and being surprised by a moose on the cover of Call Of The Wildest.

Actually, I still go for the jeans and t-shirt and biker-style leather jacket look of the Velvets or Ramones. (Except obviously I look like a strangely shaped middle-aged man in the wrong clothes.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 10 January 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm actually honestly quiet fond of the fashion of the bebop movement, where you had crazies like Monk and Bird wearing 3-piece suits and lookin' suave-as-a-muthafucka.

And say what you will about their sound, but I think the guys in Interpol look hottt in their suits.

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 10 January 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

It's gotta be Glam!!

http://www.geocities.com/zolarx1/zolarcollage.jpg

Actually, I really love the not-so-hip 60s and early 70s C & W swingers look, too--I really wanted my parents to dress like Jeanie C Riley and Johnny Cash.

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 10 January 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Why does Zolar X hate me?

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 10 January 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I've always thought that The Jesus and Mary Chain, circa '85 were the coolest looking dudes ever on the planet.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 10 January 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Spencer is also OTM.

kate, Friday, 10 January 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe this will work. Ladies and gentlemen, Zolar X. Maybe. For a minute of two.

http://www.geocities.com/zolarx1/zolarxphotos.html

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 10 January 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, fuck you, Zory Zenith and Ygarr Ygarrist.

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 10 January 2003 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i cant find a photo, but wiemar cabaret.

anthony easton (anthony), Friday, 10 January 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Pulp and Stereo Total have a good look, but I don't know what music movement that is. Whatever movement that includes Wild & Lethal Trash, that's the best.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 10 January 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Awwww... Bobby... he was so SWEET back then...

The only band I'm willing to accept White Boy Fro's on, ever. You know, to this day, I wear that exact same leather jacket, because of that photo session.

kate, Friday, 10 January 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I kind of miss teased up big 80s hair on indie guys, it was funny.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 10 January 2003 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.stereototal.de/home/foto/promo_02.jpg

you see, it is a very good look!

Curtis Stephens, Friday, 10 January 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Louis Prima, as I said:

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 10 January 2003 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

erik wears classic dunedin wear

ducklingmonster, Friday, 10 January 2003 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Pippin in LOTR looks quite a bit like Jim Reid.

also, I invariably wear collared shirts because of that JAMC session. Different Class era Pulp reinvigorated my collars too. I think Jarvis was wearing a ton of Gucci back then too.

(that is Bob Wills, btw. Texas Swing. i think it's the tapered legs on his pants that vault this look into unrepeatable genius)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 11 January 2003 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

glam glam thank you m'am. (runner up 60s girl groups)
