Who do you live with?

I live in a shared house with 3 girls. R has lived there for 3 years and is a postgrad, M moved in last week and we don't much about her yet, and yesterday we interviewed for the small room (that used to belong to Kate who has sadly moved west), and we are going to offer it to an Australian girl who seemed really friendly. Its been allchange at the moment because 2 girls have gone, and we've only just replaced them, and i'm still supposed to be moving as well.

who do you live with, and do you get on with them?

gareth, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My memories. Not always.

mark s, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nick Dastoor. We tend to get on pretty well. Of course, he may be bottling up all his niggles and will explode in a fit of unprecedented rage next time I don't do the washing up.

Madchen, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I live with this couple in their 50's...I've known them for ages. Once I have some money I'll find somewhere else. We get on pretty well!

jel, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My parents and little (well, not so little) brother, chiz chiz. Oh, for money and a little place of my own...

DG, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I live with Lixi AKA the un-named from the Trig Brother photos. Also with Alice who is an ART STUDENT and we have an empty room too. Hmph. We have only argued about the washing up once. But it was a big one! Moral of the story: do not get Magnus involved in yr domestic disputes when down the pub. He will call flatmate by wrong name and aggro will be caused!

Our landlady is a nutter. So is her drunken boyfriend. We want to move out.

Sarah, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I share a flat with Katie G and Amos, the infamous Tompaulin rhythm section. We all seem to get on pretty well, w/very few arguments over the stereo and telly and such like. I'd known both of them for yonks before I moved in (KG for > 5 years) so it was a fairly safe bet.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hello I'm back.

For the last two weeks or so it was a field in wales with 75 kids 35 adults, assorted resident hippies hiding in the trees and no sheep, (of which more later if I can be bothered).

S. Ja and Jo. all lovely. Jo. owns the house and was kind enought o invite me to live in it, but I've known them all fgor ages but only just getting to 'know' them. (I never knew s. commits the ultimate hereasy of disliking the gaurdian and buyin the times;-))

ed, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My name is Emma. I live with Pete Baran (sobs).

Also a strange fellow who we call Keith who is obsessively tidy and refuses to buy toilet paper and quite possibly has dead bodies under his bed. I hope he isn't lurking.

Our landlord is a wuvverly air steward who brings me duty free Marlboro Lights, hurray, and calls us on Friday night from Ikea to see if we need anything. He also brought us a new sofa cover as the old one was a bit grubby. He is great.

Emma, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I live with Jane & Rich & Maryann. I like all of them. Jane's dog took a shit in my rm & et our pizza yesterday tho, that sucked.

duane, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I live with my parents. They have no problem with me playing guitar but they hate harmonica. They shun all forms of art (careful I dont want to get into a my parents dont understand me thing) but once my mother admired Gruff Rhys voice, asking was he Spanish. They steal my Miles Davis Cds for dinner parties, I suspect for its soothing background music qualities to the uninitiated. Feel free to patronise me.

Ronan Fitzgerald, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Buy coupla the noisy 70s ones — Dark Magus w.four-guitar line-up — and leave em casually lying around.

mark s, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I live on my own. I wish I didn't.

Tom, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't even need to leave them casually lying around. I stuck on the Avalanches some night when they had friends around. My parents didn't notice really, god knows what their friends thought

Ronan, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I live with my parents. Yay! (But hey, I actually like them), but will be moving out (hopefully forever) after the 'gap-year experience'©. Only one person I know has moved out to go to art college.

Bill, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I live with Stephanie. You all know of her. I might be getting an extra tenant soon but I'm really doubting that's a great idea, what with them both hating each other and all.

Ally, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I live with my parents and two younger brothers. They all draw great joy from insulting my musical taste, whether it's rock (too loud! broken washing machine music!), pop (how absolutely utterly dull!), or my own piano playing (water torture! stop banging!). They don't hear my playing guitar because I shut myself up in my room and play quietly.

Arguments ensue when they want me to turn down music, I want a brother to turn down Nintendo music (it's stupid and repetitive and THEY CAN'T GET ENOUGH), or we all want to use the computer. Parents have decided I'm being rebellious when I am most certainly not but generally we get on.

Lyra, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I live with Franny Lee and Jeru Tha Damaja. Does anyone mind kazoo music?

Greg, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

An ex-girlfriend. The pseud I mentioned on the 'Faking It' thread. The drunken psycho who plays 'Abbey Road' nightly before collapsing into a stupor, and recently took a hammer (and God knows what else) to his own bed while plastered, reducing it to firewood. Only one more week of this...

dave q, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I live with Shizu and Chie, two Japanese girls. We all sleep in the same room, in fact on the same futon. Which is more chaste than it sounds.

Momus, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How pure, Nick. Two friends, Oly and Jason, and I share a house, all very cosy and surprisingly affordable. That said, for a variety of reasons I am on the house hunt -- more likely a condo, but we'll see.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

For about 3 years, I'd been living by myself, which seemed to suit me just fine. Then I moved in with Paul, you know, as couples do. Now we are in the process of splitting up, and I am trying to find another place to live. I expect I will end up living with other people, for economic reasons, and, well, to keep me from going the little bit mad and antisocial that living by myself has done. (I do think that living by yourself makes you peculiar, and I'm beginning to think that it makes it harder for you to actually get on with anyone.)

I'm just annoyed that a few weeks ago, when Gareth's room was still on offer, Paul wouldn't hear of me moving out. Typical. Oh well. If anyone hears of any houseshares with reasonable people coming up, or if there are any people looking for a houseshare, please keep me informed.

Kate the Saint, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kate, you're right! I lived alone for 4 years and still do, but I was lucky to have met a sweet girl that could understand me and give me a chance who is in the process of moving in with me currently. Should be permanent soon. I don't know why, but you overanalyze a lot when you live alone and somehow gain a very low tolerance for other people in the process. People need people so why should it be you and I should get it on so wobbley?

Nude Spock, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Right now I am currently back at the childhood homestead because my parents are kind souls, understanding to a fault about their childs perennial fuck up nature. In the last 5 years I've lived in 11 places in four cities, lasting anywhere between a year and a month. And I'm sick of it.

jess, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is Momus modelling himself on Gandhi? What a thought...

Mark Morris, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So long as he doesn't wake up and ask about bowel movements.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I do think that living by yourself makes you peculiar, and I'm beginning to think that it makes it harder for you to actually get on with anyone

Oooh I thought it was because I was an only child. ;-) Seriously, I think that is the silliest thing I heard. Then again I don't live on my own permantly as some of the rooms are rented out to people for short periods.

nathalie, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I live with Tammi and Darrell and Lucy and... [what's his name?] Matt!
Darrell now has a new job and earns TONS, so I think He'll be moving out soon.
I want to move out soon. I can't fucking well afford it though.

DavidM, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I live in a house with M and L. M is a friend I lived with in college; L is someone he met while living in the Cities last year, before I moved up. They are both engineers but I get on fine with them anyway. Even if I am a philosopher and thus by popular definition impractical and without work prospects (or money).

Josh, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i live with richard, bron, rob and don and a cat called nogano. they are all roleplayers. i am not. i like (most of)them though, because i do not interact with them much. however they are quite anally retentive (read: i am lazy bum and no-one should live with me). bron sometimes listens to good music. rob is surly. don's arse has its own website. i do not like richard very much because he is a rightwing animal-torturing fascist. nogano is a good cat.

I'm also on my own.

I don't know why, but you overanalyze a lot when you live alone and somehow gain a very low tolerance for other people in the process.

This was certainly otm from Nude Spock, but I'm not so sure it's a bad thing.

Bob Six (bobbysix), Monday, 26 December 2005 11:11 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I also live alone, and I'm quite happy not to have to deal with roommate hassles (no worrying about untidiness and dirty dishes, no bills that unknowingly go unpaid, no accidentally walking in on someone else's girlfriend taking a pee). Being able to have time for self-reflection that isn't interrupted by someone watching TV in the next room also doesn't strike me as a bad thing.

Chris F. (servoret), Monday, 26 December 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

I live with three girls in a commune. Been living here for year and a half, before that I shared a flat with a friend of mine, but she went to Argentina as an exchange student, and I couldn't find a new flatmate, so I moved here. My flatmates are all nice, but I don't socialize with as much as I did with the previous flatmate (of course she was already a friend of mine before she moved in). Ever since I moved out of my mom's place six and a half years ago I've lived with different flatmates in two communes and one two-bedroom flat, never on my own. I probably want to try that too sometime in the future.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 26 December 2005 12:16 (twenty years ago)

Durign these six and a half years I've lived with a total of 17 different flatmates, 14 girl and three guys. I guess it enhance your tolerance, yes. On the other hand, I never again want to live with weed-smoking hippies who play psych-trance all day.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 26 December 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

"girls", "enhances"

I'm too hungover to write properly.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 26 December 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

Parents and (when he's home from uni) brother at the minute, but by this time next month I should have moved in with a mate and his random assortment of housemates. Hopefully no psych-trance lovin' hippies, though my mate is a stoner. I'll keep you updated. ;)

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

I live in a five-room house-share, with head tenants Rita + Tony (French), and also Bryce (French), Gustavo (Argentinian) and Daisy (English). Except it turns out that Daisy is actually Tasie, as in Anastacia. Which actually better suits her demeanour of nice, dim, and terrified of work (She's got a diploma as a legal secretary!). Gustavo's a student/part time hotel staff, Bryce has very recently finished his legal exams, which means that he's been back in France for most of the two months that I've been here. I don't think he has a car, which is a surprise as he's a total flash boy. Rita and Tony are quite nice, I don't know how what she does, but he's a chef. He doesn't speak English well, by which I mean he doesn't hear it well.

They're nice as far as it goes, but the big problem with the flat isn't what I thought, that it's v. studenty. It's that it has no living room, so I don't really know the rest of them, and I can't have a housewarming, or even anyone around who fits in the gray area between "This is our kitchen" and "This is my room". Also, to hell with heterosexual marriage - having friends come around and see stuff they'd like to borrow is the glue that holds society together. So, sometime in the new year I'll be looking for somewhere else.

I may have invented 'head tenant': is there an actual term for 'the person everyone pays rent to, who pays it to the landlord'?

kia ora. i live with menelaus darcy, our lovely friend steve, and a new girl avka who seems nice but could possibly bring the music of ani difranco into our innocent flat. but perhaps this is a fair trade-off for the hours of bad television we will forcefeed her. we are going to have an organic garden out back!!!!! i am going to be responsible for the brocolli and radishes.

Awesome is as Awesome does (lucylurex), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 06:54 (twenty years ago)

i live with my friend, who owns the house and lets me pay ridiculously low rent with no lease. we have fun together, but i sometimes don't agree with her approach to housekeeping and maintenance (can't call a landlord and ream them out when the basement floods or the roof leaks, and apparently polite hinting that we should really get this stuff taken care of doesn't work), so that's a bit frustrating. i lived on my own for a few years before this arrangement, so the adjustment was interesting, but it's nice to live with someone and i have the bonus of living with a dog for the first time (i'm in love!). she's been out of town for a little over a week and at first it was weird, but now i'm remember how much i loved living alone. however, it will be nice to have her back and have some interaction before or after work.

I may have invented 'head tenant': is there an actual term for 'the person everyone pays rent to, who pays it to the landlord'?

i think the term is "sucker." this was me in my first apartment... constantly harassing people for money for the bills, etc., as they were all in my name and my credit would suffer were they not paid. i was also the one to find the apartment and set up meetings with landlords, etc. maybe i'm just a control freak. i feel if i leave these things up to others, they'll never get done.
