so this fantastic film was on again last nite and i see boone looks exactly like daniel bedingfield!! a-and he spends the whole film in white t-shirt jeans and leather jacket just like james dean who db sang about!

(i searched ilx for this film and all i got was film expert pete saying how david cronenberg gave a rub performance as dekker when actually he was totally perfect. does crony talk so deliberately irl i wonder?)

Only know the Commodore 64 game, sorry.

The Pro-God God (naked as sin), Saturday, 11 January 2003 14:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Argh, I started to watch it, but ten minutes in, I realised I'd seen it before! So I flipped over and watched Reese Witherspoon in this totally crap white trash retelling of Little Red Riding Hood.

Gosh, though, Nightbreed is a crap film.

kate, Saturday, 11 January 2003 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

what? NO

zemko (bob), Saturday, 11 January 2003 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I really want to like it (ok I do pretty much like it) but have to acknowledge its crappiness as well. Also re Cronenberg, he has a cameo in "To Die For" and he uses the same deliberate speech pattern. Its effectively creepy.

Sean (Sean), Saturday, 11 January 2003 15:50 (twenty-three years ago)

its crappiness is entirely necessary (this is not irony btw)

zemko (bob), Saturday, 11 January 2003 16:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Nightbreed is a GREAT film but the game on the amiga was fucking scary

gi66y, Saturday, 11 January 2003 17:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I had it on the Commodore 64. I remember playing it for about ten seconds and being absolutely fucking terrified of it, but I can't remember why. It was THAT BAD, apparently.

Ferg (Ferg), Saturday, 11 January 2003 19:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I love the flick, mostly because it isn't a horror movie, it's an action movie and the good guys happen to be undead. Cool. The story it's based on is also good.

Dave Fischer, Saturday, 11 January 2003 19:28 (twenty-three years ago)

it is piss. bad piss.

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 11 January 2003 19:57 (twenty-three years ago)

RJG is OTM. It is not quite as bad as the Barker flick w/ fuckface out of 'Quantum Leap'/'Enterprise' in it, tho', if only because Cronenberg is GRATE.

Clive Barker = James Herbert w/ 'o' levels.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Saturday, 11 January 2003 21:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Scott Bakula! (Sounds-like Dracula not Water-coolah!).

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 11 January 2003 23:41 (twenty-three years ago)

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 27 August 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

ten years pass...

Just watched this for no reason. My library had the new director's cut release on Blu-ray, and it looked cool so why not?
Not an amazing film, but full of some really cool fun stuff, basically. David Cronenberg's acting performance was fantastically campy. Loved the era-specific make-up and creature effects, fairly high budget for the time and (I assume due to the director's cut) there's just tons and tons of these weird Nightbreed to gawk at. Got the feeling like this was a really bloody cousin of Labyrinth at times. Lovely that this got a full-on HD restoration.

Nhex, Thursday, 25 June 2015 05:40 (ten years ago)

Never saw the original but played the Amiga game and that was cool. I'd love to see a decent reboot of Nightbreed though?

Are you guys watching the new extended cut? I really need to get around to seeing that one of these days.

Night Jorts (Old Lunch), Thursday, 21 July 2016 16:57 (nine years ago)

yes! I was putting off watching it for years and years bcz I knew the Cabal cut was floating around and expected something to be released. It's certainly not a perfect film but it's v inventive. Has anyone seen both?

laraaji p. henson (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 21 July 2016 17:01 (nine years ago)

I have (shocking I know), they are very very different. Ending in particular.

Here, let me Danesplain that for you (jjjusten), Thursday, 21 July 2016 17:35 (nine years ago)

A good rundown here if you are curious: http://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=707945

The new cut really does not help the ending. I like the earlier additions though.

Love this movie despite myself. It points to so much possibility! Also, my favorite elfman score of that era. Cool non corny integration of gamelan ideas.

scarcity festival (Jon not Jon), Thursday, 21 July 2016 18:50 (nine years ago)

A UK version was promised but it's still not out.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 21 July 2016 18:53 (nine years ago)

like, idk, reading abt the Cabal cut made it seem like the OG was some lost masterpiece that would have gotten stellar reviews and changed the world &c &c but, like, I do not think if the DC was released in theaters it would have been a critically acclaimed masterpiece, like parts of it are reaaaaally flimsy and silly, but I absolutely loved it (nb I also looooove Lord of Illusions so ymmv)
