Indulge me. With the Dutch due to go the polls shortly try and match these party leaders with their respective parties (non-Dutch IlxOrs only please). Judging on appearances who would vote for, and why?

A- Right-Wing Liberal
B- Centre-Left Liberal
C- Pim Fortuyn’s Party
D- Labour Party
E- Socialist Party
F- Green Left
G- Christian Democrat

I can't even begin to match party with candidate, but based on appearance, I'd probably go for 5 or 7, simply cause they've got the longest hair, and therefore are more likely to be hippies, bleeding lefties and all the other things that I believe in.

kate, Sunday, 12 January 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

1-G
2-A
3-D
4-C
5-F
6-B
7-E

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 12 January 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

4 is the cutest, hence he must be some horrible right-wing dog-raper.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 12 January 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

4 is not the cutest. 7 is the cutest (gets extra points for good taming of an incipient white boy fro) and so therefore... oh shit.

But come on, that cocked head, the soulful gaze in eyes? He looks more like an aging boyband star than a politician. Which means he must clearly be EEEEEEEVIL.

kate, Sunday, 12 January 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm enjoying this...answers later.

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 12 January 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, but which ones would you vote for, based solely on appearance? I find that far more interesting...

kate, Sunday, 12 January 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Based on those pictures, probably 5 or 7. Although, then again, I seem to think 7 is a socialist, so what do I know...

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 12 January 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd vote for number 2, he rocks the mike like a vandal. He's probably the Christian Democrat.

A- Right-Wing Liberal = 4
B- Centre-Left Liberal = 6
C- Pim Fortuyn’s Party = 1
D- Labour Party = 3
E- Socialist Party = 5
F- Green Left = 7
G- Christian Democrat = 2

Don't they have a monster raving looney party in the Netherlands?

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 12 January 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Since when did anyone vote for politicians based on appearance? Maybe that is possible, but I find it unimaginable.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 12 January 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I suspect it matters far more than it should Martin. Kennedy's filmstar looks may have been decisive in defeating Nixon. Candidate 4 has only recently been elected leader of his party, is thus new to most Dutch voters, and has seen support for his party rise dramatically in the polls. Many attribute this to the amount of people who find him attractive (amongst others the late Pim Fortuyn who said he wanted to sleep with him).

By contrast Candidate 5, the only female, who is far better looking than that photo suggests, once was so annoyed at the amount of attention given to her appearance she severly cropped her hair in protest. Her looks haven't helped her party in the polls though.

stevo (stevo), Sunday, 12 January 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not really arguing that it isn't influential, I'm saying that I can't look at a bunch of pictures of strangers and even begin to guess what their politics are, let alone whether I'd vote for them. This isn't some sort of theoretical thing where I'm saying that we should be above judging on appearances, it's a complete inability on my part to get any impression from these photos (I mean, if one was wearing a nazi uniform or something it would be different) that is relevant to who I'd want to vote for.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 12 January 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

*Everyone* is judged on their appearance, not just women. How you dress, how you cut your hair, how you present yourself - all of these are fairly accurate indications of yourself. (Yes, even the "I can't be bothered to make an impression" look leaves an impression.)

Judging people, women especially *solely* on their *attractiveness* is a dud, but it is very different from judging by their appearance.

My impressions of number 7 are drawn not just on whether or not I find him attractive but on the length of his hair - pretty durn long for a politico - on the fact that he is wearing a dark shirt, and although you can't really tell from the photo, it looks like he isn't wearing a tie. All these things scream "intellectual or hippie or left winger" to me, therefore he would be my candidate.

Now watch him turn out to be the dog-bothering nazi...

kate, Sunday, 12 January 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate got it right in identifying those with longer hair no.s 5 + 7 as 'bleeding lefties'. Messrs Bourke, Daddino both identified 1 as the Christian Democrat + 5, the only female, as the Green leader, as did Mark P. And though Jel got none right interestingly he could largely identify which side of the political spectrum they wrere on. The answers:

1-G Christian Democrat
2-C Pim Fortuyn's Party
3-A Right-Wing Liberal
4-D Labour Party
5-F Green Left
6-E Socialist Party
7-B Centre-Left Liberal

stevo (stevo), Sunday, 12 January 2003 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
Portuguese presidential elections coming soon. Fwiw Portugal lives under a semi-presidential system, so the president's duties include approving laws, having a nice chat with the PM every week, and even the possibility of dissolving parliament if he feels it necessary, as well as the more ribbon cutting affairs. As with stevo's original game, match and say who yer voting!

A-Supported by the center right and right wing parties.
B-Supported by the center left party.
C-Center left, running independently on a slightly more leftist platform than B
D-Supported by the communist party
E-Supported by the "leftist" (modern left) party

Another thing that I should perhaps note is that the "communist" party still holds some power here in Portugal, due to having been the main resistance against authorities during the dictatorship years. They are not gung-ho radicals, very much integrated into the national political system, though their last congress did end with cries of "marxism-leninism is not dead". The modern leftist party is mainly ppl who have been put off by the communist party's more traditional views on certain social issues and supposed sympathies for China, Cuba, etc. They mostly get their allegiance from social issues, and have a strong base amongst the youth.
