question about military formations.

at a parade - when a group of soldiers start shooting - in saluation or giving that good ole' thirty-one gun salute - what is that formation of soldiers called, if anything?

A firing line. It can be a squad or an element depending on the service branch.

A detachment is a part of a unit that is geographically removed from its home/mother unit - eg Det 3, 42nd BN, where Det 3 is located overseas and the majority of the 42nd is in Texas.
