I really want to start reading interesting books, and hope that a decent website will point me in the right direction.

Not precisely a review site, but if you are interested in Modernist and Postmodernist writers, I like www.themodernword.com.

Thanks a lot to both of you. Not really sure if I like Modernist or Postmodern writers yet, only just getting back into reading after ages off due to brain laziness. Will definetly check the site out though.

Some people have found that saying the kind of thing you like here, and gathering recommendations, is quite a good method. Depends if you think this place is full of people with good taste or not, which is very much a personal judgement, but it's certainly not short of people who've read an awful lot.

Yeah I flicked through the 'what are you reading when not on ILE' and jotted down a list of books that I thought would be interesting based on descriptions or the title of the book. It's good how you can all disagree with each others tastes at certain points but no one feels it's a personal attack.

Yeah, that kind of spirit is dented occasionally here, but it seems to prevail every time.

I hate to admit it, but I usually scan The New York Time's reviews as well as the Washing Post's Book Review (both available free at their websites, for a limited amount of time). But, really, I just go to bookstores and wander around the "Just Released" racks, then move onto the shelves and happily browse. When in desperate need of something new I break down and read the reviews and recommendations from the various awards sites (Booker Prize, Hemingway/PEN?, Pulitzer, etc.) That way at least I come across some new authors. It might be easier to give you some ideas if you could give us some idea of what it is that you think you like, or what you don't like.
