Relocating

I've been living in the same place for five years now, with a nice rented city centre flat and a fairly interesting, although dead-end, job.

My partner is becoming increasingly unhappy with her career, and she's also developed a strong nesting instinct - which makes us feel that the time is right to start to think about buying a house somewhere.

We're considering relocating to a coastal town about 90 mins drive away - which will take us away from family and friends - and starting from scratch. Properties are cheaper there, and the quality of life seems to be higher.

However, I feel trapped between the fear of giving up my job and home to relocate (into a rented property again first) by the sea, and the difficulty of finding a new job from a distance before giving everything up here.

Any advice on relocating and how to go about it?

Marcel - as is probably obvious from my whingeing on other threads, I'm about to do a major relocation too. I can't really offer you any specific advice, only sympathy and support.

I'm not doing anything that isn't probably obvious-writing to employers ahead of time, looking at rental listings, soliciting advice from everyone I can, saving a little money, possibly looking for a 1-3 month sublet before we move in somewhere for good. It's a liberating feeling, but boy, do I miss a lot of sleep...

a new career in a new town is all the king needs to fill his crown

(Probably not such a good idea for a king to change careers,)

I think it sounds like great fun. I would suggest, though, saving up some money ahead of time so you don't have to stress out too much about finding the perfect job straight off.

Thanks to all.

How long can one justify being unemployed after relocating, without it looking a bit suspect?

I'm finding it hard to give up my comfortable existence in favour of the chaos of moving. How should I sell it to myself?

Depends what your priorities are for moving. I'm not too far into any kind of a career, but I'm hoping that moving to a totally new town will give me a fresh perspective and a kick up the ass that I so desperately need. Some see this as foolish, and I often have my doubts, but I've done enough research and whatever to not go into it blindly.

When I moved to this big city, my live-in bf had a job lined up, but I didn't. I ended up temping for a while (and was unemployed for a while) before getting a real job 6 months later. So, how does temping sound? Or you could just get some low-paying intermediate/ part-time job as you continue interviewing.
