So I finally caved and bought a PS2 and I'm feeling really sheepish and guilty becuz I really don't think people my age (ie over drinking age) should spend as much time playing video game as they do but don't respond to that part of my post becuz here's the part I do want you to respond to: what game's should I get?

James Blount, Tuesday, 14 January 2003 08:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, so you know who you're dealing with, my sisters think I'm insane becuz I bought Madden Football AND NCAA Football but here's the thing: I really like football

James Blount, Tuesday, 14 January 2003 08:22 (twenty-two years ago)

wish I could answer with something better than "cute games that involve shooting colorful balls into the air i.e. Bust-a-Move Vol. Whatever It's At Now," but alas, I've never been much of a gamer.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 08:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Nate Patrin to thread, maybe?

James Blount, Tuesday, 14 January 2003 08:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there a wrestling game where it's Mexican wrestlers?

James Blount, Tuesday, 14 January 2003 08:35 (twenty-two years ago)

In this order, for the PS2:

GTA Vice City
Pro Evolution Soccer 2 (Real football!)
Ico
Metal Gear Solid 2

Marcel Gallingez (Marcel Gallingez), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

well i was going to recommend fifa 2003 until i realised you meant american football...
pro evol,in my opinion,is far to complicated and gets bogged down in its "realism",i much prefer fifa

robin (robin), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Pro Evo is just an amazing game, always has been even since the Nintendo. It is true if you're playing a Pro Evo game for the first time it seems very difficult and at times maybe boring or hard to score but it's so worth it for the realism in the end.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 11:07 (twenty-two years ago)

dunno,it was the football game we played for about two months before fifa came out...the matches all end up at 1-0 or 1-1
and all that stuff about the bar below the players name where you can switch between attack and defence mode, stuff like that is far too complicated,in my opinion

robin (robin), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

it has to be said i don't play computer games all that much though

robin (robin), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh we never bothered with that stuff, I'm not sure it even matters. Sometimes in ISS you like beat one player and just poke the ball into the net and it just looks and feels perfect. I don't have a PS2 so I have only played the new one once or twice but I was impressed apart from shite commentary and no player names.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

see the trouble is when someone who owns the game does bother with all that sort of carry on,spends five minutes at half time making substitutions based on the bars indicating if the player is tired or not, meaning you have to bother with all that as well or risk being at a disadvantage
the thing with fifa is that the controls seem to be of the easy to pick up,difficult to master variety, wheras with pro evo you get the impression that if you could only remember all the combinations of buttons you'd be grand, but its a fairly impossible task...

robin (robin), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I played a demo of Pro evo2 last night and it is fantastic, and a darn sight better than FIFA 2003 which was k-rub, even with the tricksy right joystick step-over option.

I am lusting over Tony Hawks 4 right now though.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

GTA 3 is still frickin' ace, and it'll be cheap as chips now.
Of course Vice City rules the roost at the moment.

and yes Pro Evo is great, in my opinion.

The new Tony Hawks game is supposed to be excellent.

(but Metal Gear Solid 2 is rub)

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Rez
Ico
Grand Theft Auto III (cheaper than Vice City, get that next year)
Metal Gear Solid 2

If there's an Official Playstation2 Magazine in your area, pick up a copy of that. They have comprehensive reviews and a demo disc (at least the UK/Ireland one does).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

The only two games I've bought for the PS2 - as opposed to played - are Crazy Taxi and Jak And Daxter. Both excellent, both budget.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Rez!!!

If you have a Dreamcast get that version of Crazy Taxi cos it's better, if not it's still grebt for PS2. I am stuck on cockfarming Jak & Daxter. Zelda: Ocarina ov Time haf distracted me...

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

gta 3 should be about twenty quid new (cheaper used - Game over here always has large used game bins which are worth a trawl, I got Madden 2001 for 12 quid) as is gran turismo 3, which I really should get. It may have been the bad (and seemingly unchangeable) camera angle that put me off FIFA, but it just seemed so awful after I've converted to pro evo. Great commentary on the latter too, from Peter Brackley and Trevor Brooking.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Zelda: Ocarina ov Time haf distracted me

Then surely it's time for... Hey! Where's the ocarina of time thread
gone? No-one move until we find that thread!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh yeah blimey where is it!!

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Crazy Taxi is one of the best games ever I reckon, not that I'd know. is "House of the Dead" still around? It has Zombies!

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anyone else had any problems getting OPM's playable demo of The Getaway to work?

I borrowed someone's PS2 at the weekend, and it was the one thing that I wanted to see.

The Getaway is a gnat's wing away from greatness.

Marcel Gallingez (Marcel Gallingez), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

star:
> Rez!!!

i got rez for a tenner in blockbuster pre-viewed bin. is very trippy. you're never really sure what's going on, just shoot everything then shoot them again.

bought my ps2 solely to play ssx tricky (ssx, the first one, is available on budget now, as is tony hawk 3 if you don't feel like forking out 40 quid for v4 before trying it)

never got more than a couple of days into GTA3. i hate fun, obviously.

getaway was interesting solely because the first mission used to be my route to work (until they take a left at the imax...). adverts for getaway on the tube are great.

andy

koogs, Tuesday, 14 January 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

andy is OTM the adverts are great and the prospect of driving round real life london doing not real life mad stuff is appealing.

I played the demo on opm's disc and it's ok, the driving is way cool but the fighting bit was hard, and those cut-aways don't want to get any longer in the real game or it'll end up being like mgs2.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

OPM=Original Pirate Material? Now there's a game I'd buy a PS2 for.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I bought an xbox and have enjoyed Tiger Woods Golf and Baldurs Gate (dungeon mayhem). Both are available for PS2.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Sega games are great.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh I'll have to look see if I can pick up my own copy of Rez (Andrew your copy is being taken good care of! sorry I have barely played Ico!)! I am looking forward to playing Getaway despite some negative reviews...

As for ssx tricky or not, something I shd probably rent first... will do that at the weekend post PAY!

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Does the game "Rez" have "Rez" by Underworld in it? If so it's probably classic.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Alas no. But it's got some great Ken Ishii.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

tony hawk pro skater 4 = one of my favorite games ever (although i'm stalled with about 117 out of 190 goals completed... no cheats/guides btw).

I really like Kelly Slater Pro Surfer as well.

gygax!, Tuesday, 14 January 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I got a PS2 about a month ago. The games I have are:
GTA Vice City
Tony Hawk 4
Jak and Daxter
Simpsons Road Rage (which was a present).
My favorite things about GTA and Tony Hawk are if you get stuck with the goals, you can still just mess around and do whatever you want and it's still fun. Jak and Daxter is very fun until you get stuck, like I am now. Simpsons Road Rage is kind of pointless.
I am excited because Sims for PS2 comes out tomorrow, though I may have to wait to be able to afford it.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Where are you stuck on Jak and Daxter? I'm stuck too (more just bored with being stuck) - at the Spider Caves...

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

GTA is a must. Hitman 2 was pretty good. The Sims comes out in the US on 1-16, I'm looking forward to that. I just bought FIFA 2003, I think its great, not rub. Tiger Woods Golf 2003 is fun.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Sounds like yr ahead of me. I'm stuck in the swamp level where it shoots you back all the way to the beginning of the swamp every time you die. I'm mainly just frustrated with it, and I've been doing better with Tony Hawk so I've been playing that more.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't have a system but I have played a few games. I thought FIFA 2002 was fine but I never compared it to another. It seems to be more of an arcade game versus the other soccer/proper football game mentioned.

Another sports game I liked was NBA Street. It is a 3-on-3 basketball game with lots of trick shots, etc. A lot of fun, even for the sports non-enthusiast. It should be in the bargain bin by now, no more than $25.

I am a big fan of Bond games, and the first one for PS2 is not bad, but the PS2 version does not allow a single player to play against bots in the multiplayer missions. I have no idea if the newer Bond corrects this problem. Of course, none of these games equals the experience of Golden Eye for N64, although I have heard that video cameras have made a comeback in the more recent Bond game on PS2. The video cameras obviously push the game more into the realm of spying as opposed to shooting randomly, which is the method I prefer, especially as it is much more challenging to complete a level in this type of game *without* shooting someone.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

GTA Vice City is good, obviously, but most fun if you have friends to play with. Madden is amazing. Still play it regularly...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Sega football >>>>>>> Madden football.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I dig Madden more than NFL 2kX because of the deeper franchise mode. I get tired of playing after a while and amuse myself with GM-type stuff. Madden >>>>>> NFL 2kX in that respect. When I had a Dreamcast I played NFL 2kX regularly, so I'm no hatah!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Madden is great. The franchise mode can be a bit much. If your a baseball fan All Star Baseball is amazing. Can't wait for the 2004 version.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't played with the franchise stuff in 2K1 yet; I'm still gearing up towards my Minnesota/Jacksonville Superbowl. I will say that NFL 2K was the FIRST football game I ever wanted to play more than once.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

So far I've gotten:

Madden Football
NCAA Football
Vice City
GTA III
Jak & Daxter
Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (I'd played this one in an arcade)
Gran Turismo 3 (literally because Mike Skinner namechecks it)
All-Star Baseball

James Blount, Tuesday, 14 January 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

DID YOU GET THE POWERGLOVE YET??!??!??!?!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

james, make sure you don't buy the 2002 all star baseball because its horrible and full of mistakes. but 2003 is great, as is 2004 is sure to be. The best sim of all the baseball games, the others Triple Play and MLB are more arcade style and way too easy. Of course I like the sim and a bit of a challenge, but others may like the simplicity of the other two. to each his own.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Can you get Minesweeper and Solitaire for this thing?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

triple play on the hardest level is pretty hard but you can still win every game.

DORK ALERT: I replay game #7 of the 2002 world series very often, and the Giants always break the game open in the 5,6,7 innings. eckstein always tries to steal, he's easy to pick off at first and gets caught in a pickle.

so poops, all star 2003 is pretty good? is that the one with a-rod on the cover?

gygax!, Tuesday, 14 January 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax, its got that jerk off Jeter on the front. NOMAH!!!!! BABY, NOMAH!

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.wiredlounge.com/images/items/ps2/baseball/i_allstarbb2003p.jpg

But, if you wait until march you can get 2004.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

nah, i want the one with Bonds at 73HR power.

cool, thanks poopsicle.

gygax!, Tuesday, 14 January 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Real people wd namecheck Minesweeper.

'95 that is

Aaron A., Friday, 17 January 2003 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Yoshi's Island for the Gameboy Advance ownz this thread even though it doesn't really pertain

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 17 January 2003 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

PS2 Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance is pretty weak. Well, it was designed for multiplayer hack 'n slash. But as a solo RPG, avoid it.

It has Beholders. I find this to be a compelling argument.

Metal Gear Solid 2 is sweet, but just rent it a couple times and beat it b/c there's little replay value.

Particularly since if you skip the story bits, you only get 4-5 hours of play.

The ultimate rpg time waster: Final Fantasy X. That fucker takes forever.

It may well have been the thing that cured me of food-pellet gaming. Particularly the Ultimate Weapon for Hawaiin dude involving playing 450 games of underwater ultimate.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 17 January 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I ordered Colin McRae for PS2 yesterday, does anyone know if its any good?

Nick A - You like Vice City ? Get GTA3 as well, more of the same without some of the extras, ie no helicopters and motorbikes, and you can't shoot tyres (which I lurv doing)

If Rockstar made another GTA game, what would its theme be ?

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Friday, 17 January 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Demo of Colin Mcrae = good for a rally game, which aren't really my cup of tea, but the graphics were very very pretty

chris (chris), Friday, 17 January 2003 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

If the next GTA takes place in a Bay Area/L.A. type setting circa 1975 and features a Ron O'Neal-type character as the protagonist, I will be able to die happy.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Friday, 17 January 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
Don't know about the circa 1975 bit, Nate, but it could be your lucky death:

Grand Theft Auto 5 (working title)

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

YES, 805!

(surely we've had this discussion before, no?)

dean! (deangulberry), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm... maybe? That's so cool. Some of my favorite people claim 805.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I think you told me that you lived in Ventura briefly. I think it was one of the "Where Have You Lived" threads.

dean! (deangulberry), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah yes. Did you see that the record store on Main Street was up for sale on eBay?

Dear Rockstar Games: please make Grand Theft Auto: Baghdad.

Thank you.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

dean: beat city... i guess it got taken off... jax0n pointed it out to me... I think the asking price was around $10k.

Dear Rockstar Games: please make Grand Theft Auto: East Kilbride.

Thank you.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Interesting. I can't say I've been to Beat City before. I haven't lived in the 805 for the past five years, so it may have been new. I also try to avoid Main St when I am down there.

dean! (deangulberry), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

It was there about 8 years ago, it's way down on main where all the thrift stores used to be, close to the Mission/"The Avenue".

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Was it always called Beat City? If so, I guess I must have missed it. I always shopped at Salzer's anyhow. And then they did that ugly ugly ugly ass tower-esque redesign.

dean! (deangulberry), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

back to video games: TONY. HAWK'S. UNDERGROUND. Best installation since THPS2 -- and my favorite level from that one (Venice Beach) is unlockable.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Ventura's skate park is in that.

dean! (deangulberry), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

THPS2 had the old skatestreet ... they've redesigned it a few times since then. (the secret level was the animal chin ramp!... i think, maybe that was THPS3)

nate, did you see my review of THUG? i thought it sucked, the worst of the TH games.

inspired by my link of the imdb board for The Thing, i found a copy of The Thing for PS2 for $8.99 and played it a little bit. it sucks, but for $9, it's better than THUG.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:53 (twenty-one years ago)

If you insist. Me, I'm gonna go play it and listen to Hawkwind.

From Zero To Drunk In Twenty Dollars (nordicskilla), Monday, 6 June 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

hey blount you could try to eBay a copy of the PS1 game, "New Japan Pro Wrestling 3," aka "Toukon Retsuden," which is the best wrestling game i have ever seen, hands down, i.e. the matches actually have a rhythm that corresponds to real wrestling matches.. the moves get crazier as the match goes on, the wrestlers get tireder and sloppier, plenty of "submission" holds, all real signature moves that the actual wrestlers have, you can throw people over the ropes, bash their heads on the turnbuckle, smash them with a folding chair.. there's tojiri and muta and chris benoit and eddie guerrero, fuckin everybody. the game is amazing.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 6 June 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

LIES

the best wrestling game is WCW/NWO Revenge for the N64.

kingfish maximum overdrunk (Kingfish), Monday, 6 June 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

everyone i used to play as in the arcade wwf game has either died or lost their damn mind.

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 6 June 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

which game? the Superstars one or the Midway one where they borrowed the MK engine?

kingfish maximum overdrunk (Kingfish), Monday, 6 June 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

it had earthquake and mr. perfect and the ultimate warrior, it was right before that tombkeeper dude, it kept up with the continuity up thru the point where i just totally stopped paying attention at all. when sgt. slaughter turned his back on america i turned my back on the wwf.

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 6 June 2005 23:36 (twenty years ago)

the superstars one, then. we'd play that one at the bowling alley after saturday morning league games.

ah, life in 1991.

kingfish maximum overdrunk (Kingfish), Monday, 6 June 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

best wrestling game, supposedly, is King Of Colosseum II, from Japan. Even has a MMA mode in it that's supposed to be better than UFC or PRIDE's games.

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

I'm reviving this thread to talk about, of all things, The Getaway.

I bought it after recommendations on ILE and really wanted to like it, Lonon 'n all that. But I found it slow and frustratingly hard to control. I never finished the first mission and I sold it.

Now I kind of regret it. I want a gritty London game. Should I buy it back? Will I get the hang of it? What's the newer instalment in the franchise like?

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

Go back to it. You'll get used to it. And it is actually possible to finish it, unlike any of the GTA games.

Lukas (lukas), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

??? It's very possible to finish the GTA games. The sequel to The Getaway = TEH SUCK, by all acocunts.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

i read this as james blunt. i thought it was going to be an onion-esque satirical thread transposing computer games with pr0n. i am fule.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

I thought that Adam was a character in The Getaway, I don't understand why he is having these problems.

I did as well. I think Mr Blunt would disapprove of certain historical innacuracies in the Medal of Honour series, but would like some of the more melodic tracks available on SingStar.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

it was right before that tombkeeper dude

HAHA! The Undertaker! Motherfucker's still wrestling, too!

Anyways, Fire Pro Wrestling R is coming out soon -- you need to mod your PS2 to play it and if you're a graphics dork you may not like it (but if you have Super Nintendo nostalgia it's PARTY TIME). The reason to play it is that it's pretty damn thorough, boasts realistic match progression (sort of like the one described re: Toukon Retsuden) and includes an insane amount of moves, including one done only by this gay-gimmick dude in some Japanese indy fed where he sticks his opponent's head down the front of his trunks before giving them a piledriver. (Here's a highlight reel: http://og-fpd.fireproclub.com/Misc/final_fpr_moves_medium.wmv)
