Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Some snobby reference to Pro Evolution Soccer (calling it ISS to make clear ones credentials)

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

ISS off N.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Pro Evolution > FIFA.

(Alternative: Taking Sides: FIFA 96 vs Sensible World of Soccer)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

from the single game demos I've played.

Pro Evo is approximatley 364.45 times better than FIFA 2003.

And I used to be a FIFA man all the way.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

SWOS every time, was Fifa 96 the one that was actually the most dreadful game veer? Or perhaps that was 97, the really slow clunky and SHIT one.

I have seen hundreds of Fifaholics converted to ISS, having said that the commentary on the latest one is worse than any game in the last 4 years.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Pro Evolution is just... how can I put this... more fun than FIFA, in the same way that SWOS was more fun than FIFA. Recent FIFA games were like "Yeah, score score score, nice 3-3 draw there", and that was it. You have a 3-3 draw with your mate on PES, though, and your heartbeat is 193 by full time.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

It's very good with both people on the same team.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Kick Off 3 > SWOS > ISS Pro Evo 2 > > > > several leaps down the football game evolutionary ladder > > > > Fifa

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the gameboy advance version, the players are tiny, but it's quite fun.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually have Pro Evolution Soccer but I secretly hate it because I never score unless I am playing against my equally crap mates. All that fancy stuff in the instruction booklet - it's TOO HARD.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

haven't played Pro Evolution. So I can't really compare.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

What's this it's too hard nonsense, just use the simple stuff and it's easy, do you find you balloon shots over incessantly, cos that can be a problem

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

The shots is the main problem. You have to get it just so. Thankfully, there's no killer goal that works everytime (qf diagonal runs in the box on all FIFA games up to about FIFA 99)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a good bit easier to score than past ISS games, that old SNES one was a nightmare at times.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes my shots always balloon unless I run in really close, which I can only get away with if I am playing one of my monkey friends.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I also have the PC version of this game, but it is just too horrible to play, as the screen is all jerky (I dunno if it's meant to be like this).

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

N you need to not give them full gun.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate football games. When you finally complete a level, you just get to fight an eleven manned monster exactly the same in all regards except the colour of their shirts. And the terrain always stays the same too.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I do try.

Does anyone do all the dummying, volleying headers etc. as described in the instructions as occuring with some fiendish combination of buttons under pressure?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't figure out headers in FIFA. I just lob the ball into the middle and some other dude heads it. But its never my guy.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, from the sound of this I'd kick all your asses at ISSPE2 on PS1. My Arsenal team in the master league consists entirely of players from the classic teams, and I refuse to score these days unless Cruyff dummies the last defender before lobbing the keeper from the edge of the area. ISSPE2 RULES.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Its all been downhill since Match Day 2 for the Spectrum.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

N, dummying, volleying? oh yes, in fact the overhead volley that I got Robbie Keane to score straight from a throw in was a piece of beautiful magic, of course I saved it!

In the new pes I managed to score a blinder from the edge of the box. You just have to tap shoot just so, it just comes with practice.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

NONE of you can beat me at Fifa 2000. I guarantee it. Honestly, I am not good at much, but I no longer even try when playing against anyone - I listen to music, use my toes to eat chinese food and write novels, stuff like that. I wish I had a PS2.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate practice.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I got Van Basten to score a 39-yard free-kick past Barthez in a game the other day. I nearly cried with joy.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

In my own perverse little world I still prefer the ping-pong messthetics of Sensible World of Soccer, it's the most board-game like game of football to be had: in its 'a minute to learn, a lifetime to master' approach to football. Plus you can go Hearts of Oak from Ghana or even Border Patrols from the Indian first division. It has the perfect mix of scale (ability to see people on the pitch simultaneously being the overriding factor), speed, goals-games ratio, differentiation between the teams, choice etc

Of the current crop, PES2 is the best by far. When you score a goal it actually feels hard-won. Whereas in FIFA, it just feels like 'find the sweetspot'.

Cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Even though they're better (in terms of technology, at least), I don't seem to be able to really fall in love with any next-gen Footie titles.

Personally, I've been spending far too much time recently playing the mighty Sensi on a SNES emulator. Was a little disappointed to revisit Match Day 2 though - so slowwwwwwwwwwwwww.

Marcel Gallingez (Marcel Gallingez), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

You need to head to Purple Sensi and download an Amiga emulator Marcel. SNES sensi was utter gash. Press a button to do the big up-and-under lob - where's the fun in that?

Oh yeah, and add to list: FUN!

Cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

You should try the original Match Day for the Spectrum. It's like running through toffee. Though on a speeded up emulator it's a different prospect altogether.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Microprose Soccer, the game Sensible Software ripped off to form Sensi, is a classic as well. Pitch is too small in relation to the players, but there's two leagues, indoor football, and some great one player modes. Perhaps the only footie game ever to be better in one player than two. (Champ doesn't count. Champ isn't a computer game. Champ is a way of life)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't Sensi World on the Amiga supposed to be the best version? Which is the best Amiga emulator these days?

I spent the Amiga/ST years on holiday from geekdom once I discovered gurls. The distraction didn't last - hence the SNES!

Marcel Gallingez (Marcel Gallingez), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh stick you, Passantino. I bet you even liked Football Glory, with its streakers and foxes on the pitch.

Worst football game ever: Libero Grande (PS1) - control ONE player for the whole game. Fer godssakes, the two player game was SPLIT SCREEN!

Cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Football Glory - note: perfectly safe for work.

Cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Kick Off was good back in the day, purple players=classic.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, Emilyn Hughes Soccer on the Speccy. Once we found out you could just lob the keeper from the halfway line any time you felt like it, we got sick of it. Pro Evo 2 *is* even better...c'mon surely the fact that it's harder to score makes it more frustrating\entertaining. It's also easier to dribble round players on PE2. FIFA games just suck. I remember playing the 2000 version and you could just do that twirly move and go past any amount of players and then score. Fucking nonsense.

Michael Bourke, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah also Fifa's players and their inverted eyebrows are crazy.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Inverted eyebrows? I dont remember that

Michael Bourke, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it was 1998 or 1999 Fifa where they all had \ / style eyebrows which made them look angry constantly.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

inverted isn't the best description.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

inclined?

Whoever said about FIFA being simply about diagonal runs into the box was bang OTM, at least with regards to one player games.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

There is one spot on the pitch in fifa 96 where you can ALWAYS score. ALWAYS. The keeper usually palms it into the roof of the net. This used to really piss my brother off, but I'd keep doing it. Aaaah.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

and of course in FIFA for the megadrive in about 1994 (iirc) you can just stand in front of the keeper when he kicks it up field and it hits you and rebounds into the net. That certainly gets boring after a while

chris (chris), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha-Chris that brings back so many memories! You can get some great scores that way, but the replays get a bit samey.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember that Nordicskillz, I ruined Christmas the year I discovered it!

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Can you still "design" players faces? In retrospect, that was pretty lame. And sinister.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I figured out what I was getting at, and even formulated it into some glib aphorism for you all:

With PES2 when you score you feel like you've played the game well enough, with FIFA 2003 when you score you like you've played the game long enough.
