"In the meantime, I guess all I can do is go for a jog with my India.Arie CD in my Discman and hope to run into someone who wants to know what I'm listening to. Hopefully someone hot."

I assumed the thread title was a typo until I saw Dan started it.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

HAHAHA! But it was a typo.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Absolutely brilliant typo. My day is made. :-)

Equally funny: "I mean, if I were threatened by women, would I own two albums by k.d. lang, a woman and a lesbian, no less?"

Way to make guys feel stupid for being feminist. And they missed the really funny targets, too, like 'Kelly Osbourne's a role model because she's fat'. I would've much rather seen a piss-take of guys who think it's 'different' to like girls who don't look like models. Next in this series: guys who oppose war in Iraq doing it to get girls (by PJ o'Rourke), guys who don't love everything in the Onion doing it to get girls ...

maryann (maryann), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

hahahahahaaa! A friend actually caught me noting how many women were in my top ten list this year so this stings especially hard. It's funny because it's so easy for liberal dudes to fall into it.

also, I think this is partially why Sleater-Kinney was my favorite band sophomore year of college. well, at least partly.

How could you not feel respect for Tori Amos—and, by extension, all women—after listening to the emotional rawness of "Me And A Gun"? Every time I put on Little Earthquakes, I get chills. Plus, Tori is so sexy on the cover.

This is the most painfuly accurate, hysterical, violently believable parody of people I hate I've seen since "He's thrown a kettle over a pub. What have you done?"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Not a quote about chick singers per se, but by ex-bf (god bless him) was always fond of telling me that "'Visions of Johanna' made me the sensitive, caring guy I am today!"

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

ha! It's funny because it's close enough to the truth to be uncomfortable.

mike a (mike a), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

you're kidding me, people like that exist?

Maria (Maria), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

well, i once pretended to like Tori Amos to get laid (and no, i own no Tori Amos cds)

as fer what i own ... someone who, like myself, owns so many Zappa cds and anything by Anal Cunt (check there, too) can't really claim that his CD collection demonstrates his "respect" for women, now can it?

There are guys like this, but I'd say it's usually not at all a conscious thing, and it can work in the other gender-direction too -- basically in my experience it looks more like this:

You take a guy who perhaps doesn't get as much female involvement as he'd like -- perhaps, so long as we're doing caricature, because he's a bit shy and intimidated or awed by women. Now imagine that he's not hugely invested in music-as-music, though he's very much open to enjoying it: this kind of person is primed to develop a pretty consuming fandom for the personality-driven female solo artists in whatever genre he likes, and in a manner that's sort of romantic -- this is the subset of let's say Bjork fandom where the fans have entered into something of a romantic relationship with the artist, where's there's as much of (or greater of) an urge to find out about the artist-as-person as there is to hear the music itself, and even the music can be taken as an expression of that artist-as-person. Boiled down this comes somewhat close to "you would like to have a girlfriend so Bjork will have to substitute for now" (because unlike the women around you, Bjork is open to your attention and you can look at pictures of her and read about her all day without that constituting "stalking") -- only I don't think it's as pathetic as that formulation sounds, because surely forming seemingly-personal connections with musicians is part of the fun of liking music.

Anyway so I think there are a small number of that kind of guy, where they might not even realize it but their musical likes are basically a big selection of crushes accomplished via music. And why would they notice? They're enjoying the music, they're entertained by the musicians, everything is basically good. (And in the stereotypical case this guy who's had Bjork as the substitute girlfriend will maybe meet a girl who's had Bjork as the substitute self and via this they'll come together).

Vast generalization yes, but okay: if you've ever spent much time working with computer people you might know exactly what I'm trying to get at.

Um, I have. And no. Either they wear the same black Pink Floyd t-shirt everyday, or listen to bad trance streams on Winamp. Or both.
