I heard a rumor that your boy Luomo is going to be in NYC this Sunday. Fancy a Luomo?

I heard a rumor

Jodybethrama.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Delay for three bones! I'm jealous.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Taken out of context, "delay for three bones" sounds like some kinda goofy black-metal crypto-Tolkienism.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm there!

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Any interest in seeing Calla + the Prosaics at the Mercury Lounge on the 24th? Two of my absolute favorite NYC bands... I'll be there.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I'm going skiing that day but have every intention to make it if possible. He's gonna be playing mostly new stuff, is the word.

Andy, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I wasn't that into Calla when I saw them. I remember the Prosaics being good but I can't tell you why.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Calla's gone more rock these days. My favorite contemporary band. The Prosaics are very good, except that their singer needs some work. Very Mission of Burma-ish. I've seen them several times and they're consistently good.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I just got a copy of the new Calla record the other day. I haven't spun it yet but now I'm kinda pysched. Yancey, in twenty or less?

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Describe it in 20 or less? A quick stab: Fairly sparse gothic pop with programmed beats and eerie keyboards. Ennio Morricone-styled guitar soars high, breathy vocals low.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Yancey, I was actually planning on going to that show. I've seen the Rogers Sisters play too, and they're not bad. So, um, yeah, if you see a person with long curly hair and a black jacket, come say hi.

(oh dear, I've officially crossed over into internet mentalism)

, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this a new Calla on Young God? Must get. Then again Gira could release anything and I'll buy it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 16 January 2003 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

The new Calla is on Arena Rock actually.

Andy, Thursday, 16 January 2003 06:38 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, so this apparently starts at 10 or thereabouts... Nonstop Jen and I are discussing meeting up for drinks beforehand at a yet-to-be-determined location, and of course that invitation extends to anyone here who fancies a pint. Jen suggests Motor City on Ludlow, but if someone has a better idea...

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 19 January 2003 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, any experts at LES-ing it up (Mary, Rosemary, Felicity?) should by all means chime in.

Jen (nstop), Sunday, 19 January 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I assume you're talking to me, the Biggest Vocalcity Fan Ever? hell yes I'm going. and let me use this thread to announce that I have a piece on microhouse's erotic properties coming up for none other than Nerve.com; I'll post it here when it goes up.

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 19 January 2003 07:36 (twenty-two years ago)

An expert, ha! Motor City sounds good, I know there was some talk of Filthy McNasty's before, simply for the name recognition benefit.

mary in london (gareth), Sunday, 19 January 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Shall we say Motor City at 8?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 19 January 2003 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I might drop by MCB tonight, seeing as it's three blocks from my house. That's contingent on the football game, howevah.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Sunday, 19 January 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm in for Motor City around 8pm. I'll be wearing my new vintage coat from Seattle to ward off this NYC chill...

Jen (nstop), Sunday, 19 January 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I always feel envious when I read FAP threads in New York or Dunedin or anywhere but London. Even more so having met two of the NYC stars. But I don't suppose I'm doing badly getting to see the London contingent pretty frequently, really. I just want to be at every ILX FAP!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 19 January 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

That was one of the best shows I've seen in ages. If the album is as good as the material he was playing (and except for a couple remixes, comp tracks and "Tessio," it was ALL new/unreleased), it'll probably be the album of the year.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 20 January 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn good. Danced with much abandon and GLEE. Really looking forward to the next record.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 20 January 2003 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

super-sweet. also let it be known that mr. luomo/vladislav is hawwwwwwwwwwwwwt!!

god damn.

geeta (geeta), Monday, 20 January 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, much dancing! Best DJ set I've seen yet.

Jen (nstop), Monday, 20 January 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

:(

gareth (gareth), Monday, 20 January 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

*jealous again*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 20 January 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

exactly ned, exactly!

gareth (gareth), Monday, 20 January 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Then we must form an alliance.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 20 January 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

"...and I'll form the head!"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 20 January 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I was thinking more Robotech.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 20 January 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Wonder Twin powers ... activate!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 20 January 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh, I don't think Gareth is in any position to be getting jealous of other ilxer's group activities!

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 20 January 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

So the Calla show last night... Fucking amazing. I've seen them over a dozen times and this was their first full show with their new guitarist (a childhood friend of theirs from Texas). Something clicked last night. They played beautifully, finally fulfilling all of the promise they've shown. The show was packed with press -- 79 press passes were issued by Arena Rock -- including Rolling Stone, Spin, NY Times, NME, CMJ, etc., etc. I think with the show last night they may have officially made it. Having been a huge fan for two years now, I actually felt kinda proud.

The Prosaics have also gotten better, but their singer is still off-key a lot of the time. They were good anyway.

Any ILXers there at the show?
