They hand out fliers in the summer in front of my work, they're bloody aggresive compared to other such flier people.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

They always seem to FIND ME, even in a crowd. Do I look like a Jewish person who wants to be saved? I guess so.

(My relatives would always tell me that they aren't "real Jews"--they're just using the "Jews for..." angle to attract customers.)

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Some people say that the JFJs are practicing a form of antisemitism -- they're just Christians who are out to convince Jews that their beliefs are meaningless and wrong, and the ultimate insult is that they'll even steal the Jews' identity to dilute those beliefs.

I really don't know how true this is, though.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow! Another (kind of) Jewish dating service. My parents would love this thread. Except for the Jesus part.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Next time you get accosted by a (male) JFJ, you should ask him to pull down his drawers and show you incontrovertible proof of his Jewishness.

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Nordic made me laugh out loud.

Yes I AM interested in being converted!! VERY interested!!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Amateurist, if he's an American JFJ, then that would be incontrovertible proof of NOTHING. Hmmm

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

But, I was talking about megilla all Jews have stuffed down their shorts! What were you thinking of?

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

*blush*

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

are non-Jews discouraged/encouraged to use J-dates etc?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Like I said, Spencer, always ask the parents first.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Some people say that the JFJs are practicing a form of antisemitism -- they're just Christians who are out to convince Jews that their beliefs are meaningless and wrong, and the ultimate insult is that they'll even steal the Jews' identity to dilute those beliefs.

and i am one of those people (that is, one of the people who thinks that the J4Js are anti-Semitic), for the reasons stated above (but mainly because their schtick is disrespectful to Jews and Judaism). it's also pretty well-known that a lot of their funding comes from the Southern Baptists (think about that the next time that you hear Jerry Falwell proclaim his "friendship" for Israel).

i like the tactic that one NYC Jewish group has taken to combat the J4Js -- they used to station themselves around the J4Js in the subway, and hand out leaflets denouncing the J4Js and their schtick.

Tad (llamasfur), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Well Falwell makes little secret of the fact that his admiration for Israel has everything to do with its being the site of Final Judgment (wherein all Jews not converted to Jesus will perish) and nothing to do with some deep-seated love for the Jewish race. Which is why the alliances between the Israeli hard-liners and the American Christian Right is so phenomenally weird.

A lot of folks bent of defending the integrity of Judaism (i.e., no intermarriage) are at least as annoying as the JFJ folks.

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

(P.S. Meaning Falwell is happy that the Holy Land is in the control of the West and not the Moslem hordes.)

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Like I said, Spencer, always ask the parents first.

hah! Jewish dating services remind me of Gilda Radner's 'Jewess Jeans' fake commercial on SNL: "You don't have to be Jewish, but it wouldn't hurt."

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

JFJs love UCI for some reason. I like their strange attempts to be hip with the in-crowd.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 16 January 2003 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I can only see google making this thread hell for all.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 January 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)
