Which first part only 99p magazine are you craving this year?

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I am old friends with the editor of that horrid sounding Mind Body Spirit thing that's just started. I shall ignore it.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I've seen that Angelina Ballerina thing and it looks really disturbing, in a preparing us for aliens kind of way. I'm might go for the Condiments Collection. Part 1 - Tomato Ketchup 99p (further issues £3.50).

Alfie (Alfie), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Angelina Ballerina = classic. It takes the Powerpuff Girls "appeal to 17 year old cynical alternogrrrls, with mild appeal to toddlers" concept, and just throws the toddlers out of the window. Qf Maisy.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 16 January 2003 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't that a title of some kid's book about a mouse?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 16 January 2003 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, yes.

rainy (rainy), Thursday, 16 January 2003 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

:-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 16 January 2003 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

On the basis of his scathing rant about Minature Teapot magazine in the front of last Saturday's Guardian Guide, I have temporarily fallen in love with Peter Paphides.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 16 January 2003 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

And has anyone seen that God-awful advert for the one where you can build replicas of Nelson's ships? The bloke locks himself away for weeks and then comes out in full Ye Olde Naval Uniform and salutes his wife.

DIVORCE HIM!

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 16 January 2003 09:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe she likes a dysfunctional man in uniform.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 16 January 2003 09:58 (twenty-two years ago)

True, it takes all sorts. I just resented the implication that she'd been skivvying away while he indulged his model ship building hobby.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 16 January 2003 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe she had been bathing in baths full of essential oils (free with Mind Body Spirit) and sipping tea from a mini teapot (free with Miniature Teapots) and was quite relieved to have some time to herself?

Emma, Thursday, 16 January 2003 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Did anybody else see Peter Paph ("he's having a laff!") interviewed on Sky News following the death of Mr Gibb the other day? The reporter asked PP to play an ansaphone message the Beegees had recorded for him. Weirdly touching and quite funny.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 16 January 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Anna - I misread that as you had temporarily fallen in love with Paedophiles and I was v worried about you. I may have been unduly influenced by disturbing news articles re Matthew Kelly and Tom Paton.

Angelina Ballerina looks scary, yet I have seen small girls pleading with their mothers in WHSmith to be allowed to collect these.

I like the new Horrible Histories partworks.

C J (C J), Thursday, 16 January 2003 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

This idea comforts me Emma, although I have no idea why I'm so concerned about the fate of Fictional Woman Whose Husband Is Mad Model Shipbuilder.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 16 January 2003 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

If there was a partwork about miniature tea strainers I bet ILX would be champing at the bit to get down to WHSmiths.

Emma, Thursday, 16 January 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I spend a sizeable part of my week phoning round partwork publishers asking for all the latest details on their products.

Not for fun, by the way. I'm not that sad. It's one of the most soul-destroying ways to spend a Thursday morning...

I think Paint With Watercolours is my personal fave at the moment (paintbox lid comes with part two), but I'm holding out till 31 January before rushing to my local independent newsagent to place an order for the Miniature Classics Library's national launch. A free miniature classic car with every part!

Alex M, Thursday, 16 January 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

AAARGH partworks!

Anna, the Paph is married to C Moran which surely brings new meaning to the term 'bumping uglies'.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 16 January 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

What I want to know is why you don't get a free doll thing with the Horrible Histories partwork - every week a new one either convincingly ripped to shreds by lions or beheaded or burnt (stake not included).

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 16 January 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Anna, the Paph is married to C Moran which surely brings new meaning to the term 'bumping uglies'.

That poor man.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 16 January 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Nicole, apparently CM shagged her way around the Maker office in the early '90s and got Paph at the end of it all.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 16 January 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Again, poor man. She was just awful. I usually have fond memories of MM but just thinking of her writing makes me feel bleh.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 16 January 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it true they never intend to make more than a few copies of these mags? I remember when I was 14 the Business teacher said this and I scoffed and said "I find that very very hard to believe" just for the sake of awkwardness and got in trouble.

I still don't know though.

I have yet to see one I want yet.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 16 January 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

On the whole they make loads of copies for the first half a dozen parts, by which time everyone who wants to collect them will have started and ordererd them from the newsagent. After that they only print the required number.

Your partwork correspondent,

Alex.

Alex M, Thursday, 16 January 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd just like to say that I think bitching about the attractiveness/sexploits of PP&CM on this thread is bang out of order.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 16 January 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I wasn't even bitching about attractiveness/sexploits, but CM's writing is/was awful so I'd sympathize with anyone who got stuck with her. Of course my writing is awful too, but I don't get paid to do it.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 16 January 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

(That was directed at Suzy rather than you, Nic)

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 16 January 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I am not clear as to what Nicole thinks of Ms. Moran and I want further information. ;-)

Remember when she and Taylor Parkes were sorta the glamour jet-set couple? In a way. Vaguely.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 16 January 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Jerry: what is this 'order' you complain I an 'bang out of'? This is one of those Breeteesh phrases which suggests all Hell will break loose if JUST ONE SOUL BREAKS FREE FROM THE OVERBEARING CONFORMITY OF IT ALL.

Meeja people who appear on television/have a byline photo/act as London town bike (just add alcohol and watch it go like a French & Saunders sketch) from 1992-5/choose one or all WILL be commented upon as I see fit..

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 16 January 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
Revive!

A whole new batch of wonderfulness has been foisted on the market. Worst of all is the charming 'I Love Horses' - please go here for more (and to hear the advert's theme tune "I love horses, best of all the animals, I love horses, they're my friends").

Alfie (Alfie), Friday, 23 January 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

ha, i saw that ad and it reminded me of the long discussion at the mitch fap about why girls love horses.

colette (a2lette), Friday, 23 January 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Suzy's justification of malicious bitching as "anti-conformist" there.

I used to work on the TV show of Angelina Ballerina. Ask me questions!

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 23 January 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you have a food mixer?

Alfie (Alfie), Friday, 23 January 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Angelina Ballerina is my Amber's role model. And Kate Bush.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 23 January 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Angelina's a bit of a stroppy, pushy madam to have as a role model. I'd go for Alice, myself.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 23 January 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

That wonderful new partwork is actually called 'I Love Horses and Horse Riding'.

I think it should have been called 'Horse!' instead.

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 23 January 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

"Cock!"

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 23 January 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Presumably they must tackle 'beans' in one of the parts.

Alfie (Alfie), Friday, 23 January 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I really appreciated that ad as a bit of light relief from last nights godawful Horizon, which is already a candidate for shittiest TV program of the year.

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 23 January 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

all Hell will break loose if JUST ONE SOUL BREAKS FREE FROM THE OVERBEARING CONFORMITY OF IT ALL.

But it will, won't it? Conformity = comforting = classic.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Friday, 23 January 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Angelina's a bit of a stroppy, pushy madam to have as a role model. I'd go for Alice, myself.

Yeah but Alice is Amber's sister...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 23 January 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Did you know that newsagents up and down the land have been selling out of The Art Of Calligraphy. Who would have thought it?
