"ILX - NICER than ILM". Discuss.

I'm getting a bit scared of going over there now. It's like walking the halls on Death Row, guys flexing gothic tattoos and making come-hither "kissy-kissy" noises as you walk past their cell.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I meant ILE. Shit.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Explain ILX and ILE to me.I only found this site when I entered 'Blue Thunder' on a search engine, and as yet do not know the meaning of the ILX/E moniker. Not that it really matters, you lot all make me laugh one way or another.

"Martin Skidmore:Urban Fisherman!" Classic!

Eugene Speed (Eugene Speed), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

ILE = I Love Everything
ILM = I Love Music
ILX = both boards together

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

That bloody simple,eh?Trust me not to have worked that out already.I'm not saying I'm dense, but light bends round me.

Eugene Speed (Eugene Speed), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree Nordic. I got tired of getting corrected (I figure .500 error/typo-free is a good mark) or bitched at, and it's making me start to hate -- not love -- music. But it's just a matter of time before ILE turns me back again. Heh.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, and typos...I seem to be making so many, like the title of this thread. I'm normally a great typist.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

ilm: cesspool of dipshit corny indie motherfuckers.

ile: cesspool of twee time wasting otherwise nice people.

advantage: ile.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel far more comfortable here. There are only a very few annoying idiots on this board, but there are always lots on ILM. I read 95% of ILE threads, but only 5-10% of ILM, and wish I hadn't bothered in half of those.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I prefer ILM.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I mainly post to ILM but prefer ILE by a longshot.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i am certainly nicer on ile than on ilm

i totally broke g.gosset's wookie yesterday :(

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah Mark, you were all ready to attack me over that Aqua album!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I think all those instant top 100's before x-mas were kind of end-of-an-era self-parody/self-indulgence for ILM (or my ILM anyhow)... abandoning the pretense of discussion and just gorging on list-making and saying the obvious before the next guy says it - the lowest conmmon d tendencies of ilm, I know, but still pretty fun in a star trek convention way.

there hasn't been much for me next door lately, but it's probably just me. i'm talked-out on music these days. I've been listening to lots of hip hop lately, if anybody gives a fuck.

(hi jess)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

ILE is way nicer, but then I'm not sure if ILM was ever meant to be nice.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been listening to lots of hip hop lately, if anybody gives a fuck

No, nobody gives a fuck.

BEHIND YOU!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Sometimes ILM makes me feel like my fanny's two sperm whales floating down the Seine. But it's alright.

Hi Fritz. Make me a hip hop tape/CD. I give a fuck, you know I do!

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i know but who?

hi arthur, mark & dan!

I'm going for korean bar-b-q tonight! table-cooking style. it is the best. (you can't say stuff like that on ILM)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

OH YES YOU CAN!!

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

what did they think of The Alarm at the NME, mark?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

like the clash only talented

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

That question made me pee my pants.

So I wanna have an LA FAP at one of the Korean barbecue places near downtown. I'll never get it together, though.

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, the answer, too!

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I AM STAAAAAARVING now thanks to this thread.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Dong Il Jang @ Hobart and 8th is my fave one of those. Maybe we can get em@il to come out!

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

cowpunk!

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

do they have the table-cooking stuff at the ones in LA, arthur?

is there bulgoki in London?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

there must be

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone should have bulgoki. Even vegetarians and vegans (they can have bulsoyki).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that's the one I went to, Felicity. Well, they're all around 8th, though, right? Yep, they have the same set-up Fritz.

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

the set up is that you come out smelling like Korean barbecue for the next 2 days and we Koreans laugh at you.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

oh sorry, yes, ILE is much nicer.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

is the bbq thing built into the table or like a little camping stove they bring to the table?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

(Soygoki?)

(Does it bother anyone that I'm essentially talking to myself?)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

west end bulgoki

swmp thing (wins), Friday, 11 October 2013 21:26 (twelve years ago)

haha

it's a dependency of sorts tho - it's not as if the board consists of those who post youtube clips and wait and those who write long thoughtful posts that demand engagement.

Agreed. But we're still thinking of this in the frame of "I put X out there and what response do I receive?"

I certainly see some posters who have very high expectations of the response they'll get when they promote X thing they love, but respond to almost everything else with yawns or carefully calibrated backhand compliments.

I've always found ILM more interesting for the chance to engage with others' taste than as a means to get others to engage with mine (it helps if one doesn't define one's taste in opposition to ILM).

Not saying I'm in the minority in that regard - I think it's true for most posters - but it's something that's easy to lose sight of.

Tim F, Friday, 11 October 2013 22:47 (twelve years ago)

you're an inspiration. and brilliant.

LJ the ship has passed but if you are still looking for hip hop that kind of stands out from the pack, this: https://soundcloud.com/le1f/sets/dark-york

was my album of the year last year, and does a lot of interesting things imo. Obv everyone was inundated with 'Wut' which is great but hardly representative for what I tagged as more surreal tendencies in the album. It might be something you would like...

ILXors who never post to ILM, why do you hate music?

pomenitul, Tuesday, 10 December 2019 11:21 (five years ago)

ILM frequently has a very tenuous connection to loving music

éminence rose et jaune (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 11:47 (five years ago)

It's up to YOU to change that if such is your heartfelt wish.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 10 December 2019 11:50 (five years ago)

when did you stop wifi-ng your beats?

Banáná hÉireann (darraghmac), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 11:56 (five years ago)

xp

nah i'm fine with it how it is, i don't necessarily want to talk lots about music, or analyze it in a bunch of ways that other ilmors enjoy, but like an awful lot of people i don't think that's got anything to do with not loving music, quite the opposite

éminence rose et jaune (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 12:03 (five years ago)

éminence rose et jaune (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 12:08 (five years ago)

ILMers who never post to ILX, why do you hate everything?

I've Got A Ron Wood Solo Album To Listen To (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 13:47 (five years ago)

You may want to post that to ILM for the sake of cross-pollination.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 10 December 2019 13:56 (five years ago)

ILXors as opposed to ILMers... or is that just me?

I've Got A Ron Wood Solo Album To Listen To (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 13:59 (five years ago)

Perhaps this is subtly meant to reflect divergent linguistic trends on both sides of the pond.

When we do we cross paths with people who hate pop 🙃

gyac, Tuesday, 10 December 2019 15:54 (five years ago)

(The réal answer is that I’m a masochist, and also I have nothing to add to 100% of ILM threads)

gyac, Tuesday, 10 December 2019 15:55 (five years ago)

Nonsense, you've got plenty of threads all to yourselves, unhaunted by the Sasquatches of antipop.

No thanks, I get bullied enough for my music taste at home!

for now

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 16:02 (five years ago)

why do you hate music?

I don't hate music. I'm just too busy dancing about architecture to have time for ILM.

To put that in a less dweebish form: I enjoy music; I have a variety of thoughts about it; they are not thoughts which rise to the level of being valuable to anyone else, although I do sometimes inflict them on my wife, whose forbearance I can usually count on because she expects me to do the same for her.

Banáná hÉireann (darraghmac), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 16:45 (five years ago)

People who post to ILM, why do you hate ILXors?

It's got a bit of an infestation with crabby little pricks now doesn't it? I was just thinking about all the music I've found through ILM over the years but now? I'm not sure and it does seem possible for a forum to get locked in a death spiral of vindictive gatekeeping that no amount of individual effort posting can overcome.

it is a funny name for a board whose value derives from the fact that critics post there -- it's not a board for enthusiasts.

i read ILM all the time and post less often. indeed, i only post to ILM when i think i have something of value to add, out of respect for the board. ILE i take a different approach.

treeship., Wednesday, 11 December 2019 13:31 (five years ago)

it's not a board for enthusiasts.

Hard disagree. Some of the best ILM posters in history have been the enthusiasts. Just don't expect others to automatically share that enthusiasm, and you're good.

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 11 December 2019 13:42 (five years ago)

Ie. ILM is what you want it to be. Think abt it.

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 11 December 2019 13:43 (five years ago)

it's 2019 there's no such thing as a critic just enthusiasts and enthusiasts who still think music criticism is a viable professional field

Mordy, Wednesday, 11 December 2019 15:20 (five years ago)

imo ILM isn't nearly as sour as virtually every movie thread on this board.

i admit to have accumulated a fair amount of petty backbiting grudges on ilm over the years

overall though i find it to be a pretty good place for being enthusiastic about the music i like - i don't really have a lot of time in my life to talk shit about music i don't like...
