ILXers, I need your help...A gameshow thread

...So I just found out that I am to be on a Channel 5 gameshow next week. I'm not kidding. Months of money-spinning ideas included trying to get onto gameshows (as well as multiple ill-conceived football bets), and after six or so months of trying, this is my reward.

I auditioned over the phone last night while sitting in the photo booth in a Budgens, as they kind of caught me when I was buying a sandwich. I got about 75% of the questions right, but my knowledge of modern politics is pretty poor-I got the Maastricht treaty question right, but that's it. Getting over-excited, I also said "Nina Ricci" instead of "Christina Ricci", but they let it slide. Oops. Can't drop clangers like that next week.

The upshot of this is that I'm no quiz anorak. How best can I prepare? Any websites? Any lists of cabinet members and their titles? Help prevent me from getting roasted by quiz geeks and win me some money in the process!

anthony easton (anthony), Thursday, 23 January 2003 07:49 (twenty-two years ago)

which show is it?

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 23 January 2003 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

topranko?

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 23 January 2003 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't stress, any Channel 5 gameshow I've ever seen has been piss easy.

smee (smee), Thursday, 23 January 2003 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

smee, this is true.

Oh, it's called Brainteaser, I think. I don't really watch Channel 5. Except for The Shield.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 23 January 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh man, that is so easy, you'll walk it! The questions are so easy and there's a word puzzle that gives shows how many letters are in the answer, even if you don't know the answer you can take a good guess by looking at the word puzzle.

I was off ill for a long period last year and watched too much crap tv, I have no shame!

smee (smee), Thursday, 23 January 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

smee-ruin it for me, just how underwhelming are the prizes???

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 23 January 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

And when is it on? I've never actually seen it...

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 23 January 2003 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's on after lunch, it's really bad and k easy. They do those pyramid puzzles, you know, the ones where they give you some letters, you add another letter to make up a word and so on?

Mat
Tame
Meaty
etc etc

smee (smee), Thursday, 23 January 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I am disappointed that it's not topranko, as seeing that on the schedules always makes me think of Toraneko, which is a good thing. Good luck nonetheless, and tell us when it shows.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 23 January 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Brainteaser if so so awful and stupidly easy. You'll walk it.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 23 January 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Graham is right...but just make sure you look your prettiest so that if you somehow do not win you might yet escape with a modicum of digntiy intact

good luck! i'll try and look out for you (post a photo up here)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 23 January 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

good luck! win lots of prizes! have fun!

donna (donna), Thursday, 23 January 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

If I were you, I would concentrate most heavily on practising for the situation you will be in, not on studying up. In other words, practise having quickly to come up with correct answers to useless questions. Practise for the pressure. Practise for staying calm. Practise for bright lights and people yelling.

Envision that your problems with money will be solved in an entirely different way and that this game show thing is a lark, a larf, a stroll in the garden. Bring a lucky penny or something like that you can hold in your hand if you feel panicky (which you won't). Good luck.

Aimless, Thursday, 23 January 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

what are the prizes?

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 23 January 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I still don't know.

I will try and post when it's on, but please don't spend endless lunchtimes watching a crap gameshow just because of something someone said on a comedy message board! I appreciate all of your sentiments nonetheless.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 24 January 2003 07:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Aren't the tests/whatevers that gameshows use to screen final contestants from the rest of folx harder than the material on the show proper?

Leee (Leee), Friday, 24 January 2003 08:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Really? Then it'll be a breeze.

Thinking of wearing my glasses to look smart. Whaddya think?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 24 January 2003 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

OK. Update, so I watched it, and yes, on the surface it does seem that easy. Clearly the crossword bit is the place to pick up points if you draw an absolute blank on the jumbled words (please, god). But the bit I found really hard was filling in the blanks. Example

L------K

I tried doing this afterwards, and when you are trying to think quickly, it is tough to come up with anything. Now have severe nightmares about just drawing a blank and have some smug quiz geek steamroller me. Also figured out that "grand" prize will EXACTLY cover overdraft and credit card bill. eep.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 07:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Shit. Didn't make it due to sno'. I'll get another chance in a few weeks. I could have caned it, though.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Saturday, 1 February 2003 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, what does "sno'" mean?

Chris P (Chris P), Saturday, 1 February 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

SNO-

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 1 February 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris P (Chris P), Saturday, 1 February 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris P (Chris P), Saturday, 1 February 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

-CONE CONSUMPTION?

Chris P (Chris P), Saturday, 1 February 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

It's one letter, Chris. PAY ATTENTION.

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 1 February 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

-t.

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 1 February 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

-g, I hope.

Chris P (Chris P), Saturday, 1 February 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

If it's "snow" and therefore Nordic decided it was easier to type ' than w I will fall into a deep depression which no amount of jugband music will pull me out of.

Chris P (Chris P), Saturday, 1 February 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Word scramble hint: SNWO

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 1 February 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

OWNS!

Chris P (Chris P), Saturday, 1 February 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

*ding ding ding*

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 1 February 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait! This is a comedy message board?

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 3 February 2003 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't hear anyone laughing, Nick.

Chris P (Chris P), Monday, 3 February 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not easier to type ' than w. I just felt like being playful with my keyboard. Don't be depressed, Chris Piuma.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Sunday, 9 February 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, so you're saying a wasted a whole week of being depressed? Sigh!

Chris P (Chris P), Sunday, 9 February 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 4 April 2003 07:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

What were you doing buying a sandwich in a photo booth?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

nine months pass...
Sometimes I think about how different my life would be now if I'd won that 3000-pound prize...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 8 January 2004 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Woah, you were going to win an elephant?

Stupid American Humor (Dan Perry), Thursday, 8 January 2004 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah adam, you could've had a whole new life overseas, just think...

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 8 January 2004 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I went on that show too and didn't win. Someone else from ILX should go. There must be a champion among us!

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 8 January 2004 10:35 (twenty-one years ago)
