why is everyone so interested in the Chinese New Year all of a sudden.

ok, fine, because it's Chinese New Year. But why particularly this year? What's the deal with the sheep?

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 1 February 2003 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

People like the rat/sheep confusion.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 1 February 2003 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

explain.

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 1 February 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I will not.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 1 February 2003 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

explain please, Mr Dastoor!

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 1 February 2003 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry - I has cats and rabbits in mind.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 1 February 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I ask for elucidation and all I get is obfuscation!

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 1 February 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry to say this is the first I've heard about it being the year of the sheep. I'm a dragon.

But then I just went to google (to try and answer the question) and saw this: http://www.google.com/

113-Avert misunderstanding by calm, poise and balance.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 1 February 2003 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow Jel - that looks a really great search engine! I bet it'll give Lycos and Altavista a run for their money.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 1 February 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Sheep appears to be a modern non threatening version of Ram or Goat.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 1 February 2003 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh so you say nice, clear easy-to-understand stuff to Jel then, N. (boo hoo)

there's all these noble animals in the Chinese astrological calendar (dragon and tiger for example) which could have been promoted when there year came up,why big up the sheep? Is it just coz everyone likes to draw (or see) cartoon sheep? Or is it coz sheep are easy to draw? The one on the wall of the Old Tom pub here in Oxford recalls the old sheep with no legs = cloud joke partcularly vividly.

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 1 February 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

The time is right to make new friends.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 1 February 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

sheep are important, like for keeping people warm, and eating and stuff.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 1 February 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I really don't get this N., or know whether you are being serious or not....are you saying I shouldn't post here?

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 1 February 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, it's N, he's kidding!

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 1 February 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

(I think)

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 1 February 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not so sure Jel, given what's been happening recently; I think I've been an idiot and made some errors of judgement on ILx of late and I really need to know if everyone's thinking ill of me and whether I owe people an apology.

for keeping people warm

DRAGONS are better at this shurely?!

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 1 February 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark please do not worry I am just pasting random fortune cookies.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 1 February 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

(It is much easier to be critical than to be correct)

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 1 February 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

What a relief, N. I have been worried abt this.

I've only had those cookies once (at a *Thai* restaurant as it happens) so my ignorance *might* be forgiven.

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 1 February 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

You could perish in the field of medical research.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 1 February 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently it's the year of the Black Sheep.

And if your SO was born in 1979, consider yourselves Sheep shaggers.

suzy (suzy), Saturday, 1 February 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Baaaa.

Anna (Anna), Saturday, 1 February 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

(I am a '79 baby)

Anna (Anna), Saturday, 1 February 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I suddenly love sheep.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 1 February 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anyone read 'A Wild Sheep Chase'?

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 1 February 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I consider myself to be more of a Ram.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 1 February 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

You're more of an Ass.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 1 February 2003 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I suddenly love sheep.

whereas I go through a pphase of mildly liking them, like them a lot for a week or so and only after a month or more does it become full-blown infatuation.

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 1 February 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

OI, DASTOOR. Leave it. You 'eard.

suzy (suzy), Saturday, 1 February 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

You're quite right. It was rude. I blame RJG.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 1 February 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

People really need to give goats a break. What with cashmere and curried goat, they can be wonderful.

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 1 February 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a Snake in Chinese astrology and a Scorpio in Western astrology. That seems pretty consistent. Cuddly, either way.

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 1 February 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I am a Tiger. Rar!

Mark H, no-one hates you. I bet you're one of the kindest-natured people on ILE.

Mark C (Mark C), Saturday, 1 February 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't remember what Chinese sign I am, but my Chinese birth year is 1977 if anyone knows what animal that was. (I was actually born in 1978, but just before Chinese New Year).

In Western astrology, I'm a v. typical Aquarian.

(this is *not* a big hint that my birthday is very soon, honest ;-)

caitlin (caitlin), Saturday, 1 February 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark H, no one dislikes you at all! You are among our finest Marks!

Anyone know what 1959 was? What am I, an echidna? A cuttlefish?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 1 February 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

what does it mean to be a sheep in the year of the sheep?

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 1 February 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Baa-d.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 1 February 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Ed (dali), Saturday, 1 February 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Wintermute (Wintermute), Sunday, 2 February 2003 04:43 (twenty-two years ago)

(I'm sorry, my last post was supposed to land in the "favourite misread ILX thread titles" thread. Ignore it.)

Wintermute (Wintermute), Sunday, 2 February 2003 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I've read the first 50 pages of a Wild Sheep Chase, I'll finish it one day, it's just like every other Murakami book really.
