Bowling classique or dud-oh

I have a massive headache, as though that bowling ball fell on my head instead of the lane. I think I managed to do one strike during three games. I lost every time. My boyfriend managed to do a gazillion strikes and won nearly every time. It was GRATE fun though: crap musick, lots of *serious* bowlers sniggering at me, smoking a few dozen cigs, dancing to Madonna and Michael Jackson's old hits and well those balls that kept rolling on the other lane.

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 3 February 2003 08:51 (twenty-three years ago)

The bowling alleys had fluorescent lighting!
I am going for classique.

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 3 February 2003 08:52 (twenty-three years ago)

hey, i went bowling on saturday. i was a bit rubbish (86 and 87), managed to get one strike. however bowling is tres classique. there was also a large (20+) group of goth/metallers in, i think they might have been off the interweb...

is it time to revive the FAB (fancy a bowl)?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 3 February 2003 09:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I like bowling. I have only gone once but it was triffic.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 3 February 2003 10:09 (twenty-three years ago)

i am definitely pro the proposed FAB, altho i am also rubbish

stevem (blueski), Monday, 3 February 2003 11:43 (twenty-three years ago)

classic

anthony easton (anthony), Monday, 3 February 2003 13:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Yup. As long as you don't get depressed if you do badly.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 3 February 2003 13:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I like bowling, but rarely get the chance to go. There's no alley in Oxford y'see.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 3 February 2003 14:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Yup, I like it! It is also perfect proof of the fact that beer DOES make you better at things. After a pint and a half I'm at my peak - my scores are much higher at this stage than either before or after. It's invariable. Yay for beer!

Last weekend I got beaten by Jerry the Nipper. But that's a different thread, hoho.

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 3 February 2003 14:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it's do with taking yr time. I think maybe drinking makes you do things in a more poderous fashion, which is u+k for bowling. The most important thing that a learnt when I started to go bowling was to take my time as there's little or no time pressure on you to bowl quickly and if you bowl any-old-how then chances are yr ball'll end up in the little silver channel alongside and not hit a thing which is V. EMBARRASSING!

oh, that and not use the heavy balls....

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 3 February 2003 14:15 (twenty-three years ago)

ponderous.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 3 February 2003 14:18 (twenty-three years ago)

NYC ILX Girls to thread!

rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 3 February 2003 14:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not a NYC ILXor... how 'bout a VA ILXor?

I have great fun bowling even though I'm horrible at it.

Ever been duck pin bowling? I was supposed to go for the first time Thursday night but they closed due to icey roads. Is that fun?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 3 February 2003 14:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I have my own shoes and ball = I own this thread

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 3 February 2003 15:09 (twenty-three years ago)

What about a bowling bag, lawrence kansas?
Also, what's yer ball look like?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 3 February 2003 15:21 (twenty-three years ago)

The legendary (sorta) Kona Lanes bowling alley in Costa Mesa -- just across from Noise Noise Noise, record story of much worth -- is apparently about to close. V. depressing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 February 2003 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I love bowling! There's something absurdly aesthetically pleasing about it.

Also, um, well..."you're out of your element Donny!"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 3 February 2003 15:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I FAB but only if Ms Cl*eys makes an appearance.

Graham (graham), Monday, 3 February 2003 15:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I Bowling. It's good fun. My boyfriend hates it, therefore, I never get to go. How lame is that? When I do go, I like to pretend like I've been drinking for hours. That way, if I do really crappy, I can play it off. But I usually at least break 100. More often than not, I hit 150. That's pretty good for a weak little girl, isn't it?

Megan P, Monday, 3 February 2003 15:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I like bowling. The town near my boarding school had a decent alley, and we used to go almost everyweekend at one point. The alley was hicksville, and it was fun being a preppy intruder. I was never good at bowling, but I had great fun regardless. There was a Friendly's across the street from the alley, and so we would go out for ice cream afterwards. Also, smoking was illegal at my school, so it was nice to vanish into the bowling alley and have a cigarette without constantly looking over my shoulder for the Man. Classique.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 3 February 2003 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Sarah: My ball is cherry red and my bag is white and powder... er I mean electric blue. I cut quite a dashing figure on the lanes.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 3 February 2003 16:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Bowling rocks, but why is it so f'ing expensive? I only go like once or twice a year because I am a cheapass. I'm not very good. I usually start out ok but then psyche myself out by thinking about what I'm doing, and then I start getting drunk. At the intersection between overthinking and drunkenness I start to get good, but it's a brief span of time.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Monday, 3 February 2003 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

dud. but the sound track to watching a fucking heavy pink ball rolling down the gutter is indeed classique! at my local alley they have a cd which basically compiles all the classic early to mid-90's authentic emotional over-blown epic chart trance beatz like gina g and haddaway!

the internet (scg), Monday, 3 February 2003 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

ocassionally they get a bit hype and cane out some classick riddims like chaka demus and pliars and snow!

Tonight is bowling night! Friends and I go do the dollar bowling thing every Monday, but it's been weeks since we've been able to go because of the recent tour. But tonight! We shall return! And triumph, too.

I never learned how to do "the walk". I just walk up to the alley, stop, and hurl that fucker. It is perhaps not the best technique but I have fun.

Chris P (Chris P), Monday, 3 February 2003 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

i like getting the kids ramp out and using as really heavy ball

the internet (scg), Monday, 3 February 2003 17:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I am still trying to convince everyone to do bumper bowling.

I am a kee-RAY-zee mofo, yes I am. A real party aminal.

Chris P (Chris P), Monday, 3 February 2003 18:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Duty now for the FABture!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 3 February 2003 18:39 (twenty-three years ago)

My dirrty secret: I actually used to bowl in a youth league, and was actually not too bad some of the time. I even managed to win the provincials in my age class once and wound up going to Toronto to compete in the nationals, where I absolutely blew it by trying too hard...you need to relax to throw the ball properly.

Haven't bowled much lately, because I actually still have too many bad associations with it now; my parents were league bowlers for quite a long time, and I hung around the lanes often enough because of that that I got to see what I call "the lifers": those are the chainsmokers who literally live for bowling, and hiding fifths of liquor in their bowling locker. The ones with right arms three times the size of their left arms, and mouths like truckers. The ones who sweat a combination of lane oil and hard alcohol. The ones who shoot a reasonably good game but swear about it anyhow, and then retire to the bar portion of the lanes, where they proceed to get hammered while playing the video lottery terminals. That = dud.

I still like to bowl a couple lines every now and then, too. Last time I seriously bowled I used a 12-pound ball, but I think I may be up to 14 now.

Trying to find a lane ball with holes drilled in such a way that they will fit your handspan, without ripping the shit out of your fingers: dud.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 3 February 2003 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I made plans one year to be Jesus from Lebowski for Holloween. It never happened, though.

I was The Dude a couple years back. It wasn't much of a stretch at the time, as I was already overweight and had long hair then. I just put on a bathrobe and shades and cussed alot and ended every sentence with the word "man".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 3 February 2003 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Trying to find a lane ball with holes drilled in such a way that they will fit your handspan, without ripping the shit out of your fingers: dud

Especially if you are a wuss with enormous hands, like me. One reason we get there early is so I can grab my favorite ball, the coveted Big Hole 'Leven. If someone else snatches her -- likely, since everyone want a lightweight ball with adequate finger room -- then I am forced to go with Scratches, a perky orange 13-pounder covered in scratches, which I'm sure would be terrible if I bowled properly but does OK with my advanced bowling techniques. Also no one ever wants to play with Scratches, so I am assured he'll be there for me.

Yes, one of the bowling balls is a male and one is female. I'm not sure how we decided this. Also, yes, I am really excited about getting to bowl tonight after many weeks off the lanes.

Chris P (Chris P), Monday, 3 February 2003 19:30 (twenty-three years ago)

NYC ILX Girls to thread!

Ooh yes, I believe Felicity is planning on organizing a bowling-type outing at the lovely Port Authority lanes. So chosen because it is: a) in my neighborhood, b) right across the street from Siberia. (Well, those were my lobbying points.)

It won't be quite the same as the candlepin-stylee I grew up on (hurling grapefruit-size ball down lane = classic), but I doubt that kind of fun is to be found in the NY area.

Jen (nstop), Monday, 3 February 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd show up for this. I bowled a couple of times many years ago and was useless, but they were good evenings out.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 3 February 2003 20:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Sean Carruthers, What was your league named?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 3 February 2003 20:39 (twenty-three years ago)

YBC!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 3 February 2003 20:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Bowling is classic. The last "what do you all look like" thread features me at the bowling alley Sean used to hang out at. I look like I'm having fun, don't I? Getting worked up over a bad game when relatively speaking you did well is dud. Bowling with people who cheat, use the bumpers (if they have 'em) and want to change their name on the electronic scoreboard every gd time they go up is very dud. I also used to bowl in a YBC league, but 5-pin instead of 10-pin. I hate 5-pin now with a passion, but there aren't very many 10-pin lanes around up here.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 3 February 2003 23:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think that was the one I used to hang at, Bryan, if it's the one on 18th street south...I only ever really hung at the one in the basement on 10th street. When I still bowled myself, there was none of this electronic scoring crapola, it was all on a big sheet of paper and you could keep your awful scores private (ie the whole world couldn't hang out behind your lane and laugh at how badly you were doing just based on the overhead projection). I liked keeping score myself and not having to call tech support if something was entered incorrectly. DAMN THEM ALL.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 3 February 2003 23:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I find it hard to believe Megan P's average scores, especially as she is just a weak little girl.

Taking sides: duckpins vs candlepins?

Le bowling -- c'est classique!

Yes, who wants to bowl at the alley at Port Authority on Tuesday the 11th? According to Jen, they also have a bar and you can drink and point and laugh and take photos and everything. And it's the Port Authority -- we can make terrible puns, especially if Ally comes.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 3 February 2003 23:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know if I can make the 11th now.

rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 3 February 2003 23:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I bowl better than I play pool - but that REALLY isn't saying much.

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 00:02 (twenty-three years ago)

rosemary, why don't you pick another date for later in the month and we can give the other NYers some heads-up on a thread, real properlike.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 00:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Sean: the 18th St. south Thunderbird wasn't built yet when that pic was taken, but it was around the time when they first got the electronic crap. GLOW BOWLING LIX.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 02:38 (twenty-three years ago)

i come from a town full of Polacks (my grandfather used to call it "Polish boce"). what do you think i'm gonna say about bowling?

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 02:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Burns: I don't remember writing a check for bowling.
Smithers: Uh, Sir, that's a check for your *boweling*.
Burns: Oh, yes. That's very important.
Smithers: Yes, Sir. Remember that month you didn't do it?
Burns: Yes...that was unpleasant for all concerned.

ten months pass...
I scored a personal best 155 on Monday night (after not bowling for about a year and a half). My previous best of 147 stood for 18 years, bowled during my first game ever!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 18 December 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

One regret is that I didn't get to try out 5-pin bowling while I was in Winnipeg. Even though I see that Bryan hates it. But I did go bowling in Canada with Anth, that was awesome.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 18 December 2003 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I am going bowling tonight.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 18 December 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...
Me and my mate went all-day bowling for £5 today (Megabowl Nottingham - I think they are a chain, this is a very good deal if you can get it). We got in 13 games (I won a grand total of one) and I know my right arm is going to fucking knack tomorrow.

I've been in a bowling league since September and I've improved considerably to an average of 109 based on all my scores since September. My best is 158, but mostly I'm just consistent in the 100-120 range. The league is done on handicap so we all compete on a level playing field and my team are fucking LAYING WASTE to the competition about 8 points clear. We rule.

I bowl with a medium 10 ball, which is as much as my puny arms can manage.

oh man i use to go to the nottingham megabowl all the time as a student. i used to go there and get in loads of games in a day. it's good for practicing your technique because you're not pressured knowing you're paying ££££ per go.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 00:59 (twenty years ago)

in fact, i bet i was in that same league as you (this is notts uni one? i used to keep scores in 2000)

yowza. mine's 174, but that's definitely an outlier - my next highest is 140-something. (i still haven't mastered the curve thing)

i've never bowled alone, i don't think. ideally i'll bowl with one or two other people, since games drag more the more people you've got

joseph (joseph), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 03:38 (twenty years ago)

233 was the hi-game. a few years ago also. it was great because we were in the league and were playing the top team that day: the other guy has like a 70 pins lower handicap, but i ended up beating him with the actual score!!

haven't done quite as well since.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 16:25 (twenty years ago)

High game: something like 135 (why can't I remember?) -- this was with ILXors this past September for Sarah's birthday.

On Friday I got my best ever score - 154. Looking through this thread, it may not sound like much to some of you, but I was completely thrilled with my performance.

Daniel Giraffe, Monday, 9 November 2009 09:51 (sixteen years ago)

I was with a group of people who were just looking to have a relaxed, fun evening, but I can't help it, I feel compelled to take it seriously and get quite pumped up.

By the way, I wonder if I'm the only person in the world who bowls right-handed and curves the ball from left to right.

Daniel Giraffe, Monday, 9 November 2009 09:55 (sixteen years ago)

I only have a vague recollection of this. Hmmm. It seems my life is filled with massive headaches. hah

one year passes...

About two Halloweens ago I was at a party where one of my kinda-friends (didn't know too much about him at the time but he lived with my good friends and could talk sports so I liked him) brothers was there, the cops came and he got arrested for some DNR bullshit, whatever, bail was $480 and my friend of course was going apeshit, saying we had to bail him out, whatever. I mean yeah he's a stranger and seems kinda scummy but apparently he's starting a new job the next day and has a daughter he was on the verge of losing custody of. As it turns out I had won a poker tournament the day before so I had some cash on me, I said okay, I'll loan $300, he'll pay me tomorrow, right? Of course he says, no problem, I'm not totally comfortable with this but I trusted this guy (my friend, I didn't know much about his brother). Well, once he's out, he gets my number, I get his, don't hear from him, my buddy gets kicked out of his place (for not paying rent, obviously), brother's number is disconnected. Finally get ahold of him weeks later, he says he doesn't have the money, whatever I'll let it slide for now. He changes numbers like three times, but I still get no responses, he ignores my texts and calls, fuck this, I'm about to call it a loss, but then...

It turns out this guy bowls in my league!! I approach him like every other week, and his responses go from "I don't have anything, sorry, I have so many expenses", to "Nope, nope, nope", to not even giving me eye contact. How the hell do I get this guy to pay?? Or am I just totally screwed? Like, seriously, I don't know what to do, and I doubt the police are going to help me here. BTW, I raised my average 12 points over the last month and a half; can't believe what a minor difference in approach can make.

frogbs, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 21:31 (fifteen years ago)

Idk maybe this a a bowling thread or whatever and you bump it to ask about your deadbeat friends

Aerosol, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 21:36 (fifteen years ago)

Well yeah, that's why I added that bit about the approach in there. I originally dropped it at the 3rd prong to the right which usually ended up with a Brooklyn. I was hooking too much but couldn't figure out how to hit the spot; but actually by moving left to the second prong, I can toss at like a 5 degree angle and hook it right in there, so I'm averaging like 40+ points more now

frogbs, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 21:40 (fifteen years ago)

I mean since I changed my approach, overall avg up 12

frogbs, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 21:41 (fifteen years ago)

frogbs, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 21:41 (fifteen years ago)

I think George Costanza summed it up well: "Bowling! What do you say, bowling? Bowling's insane! Bowling is crazy time."

Some, on the other hand, get no rush from bowling.

I don't think this got mentioned upthread (at least not with a PIC) but there is a bowling alley in Minneapolis with live music ON THE LANES. My band has played here and it is totes awesome.

one year passes...

I've been trying for almost 40 years to turn myself into a decent, 80-something golfer playing 5-10 times a year, but I don't think it's ever going to happen--too many moving parts. I think I could master this game, though. I was a pretty good 5-pin bowler in high school--something like a 160-range average, with a high game in the high-200s. We did our yearly school bowling trip today (10-pin), and I shot 134/127/129. Finished the first game by striking out.

Much cheaper than golf, too.

clemenza, Friday, 8 June 2012 23:00 (thirteen years ago)

nine years pass...

Checking in 9 years later...I've joined a (non-competitive) league in the small town where I live. I'm terrible now! As I said then, I understand why I'm a hacker when it comes to golf: the golf swing is very complex, and it's not something you can get right playing only casually. But 5-pin bowling ought to be relatively easy. I've got it down to a two-step approach, there are arrows that tell you where to throw the ball, and the ball is much lighter than a 10-pin ball. Meanwhile, in seven weeks and 21 games, I believe I've broken 150 twice. In the 30 frames I threw tonight, I had one strike and 29 open frames. It's maddening.
