Archel (Archel), Monday, 3 February 2003 12:38 (twenty-three years ago)

The Stone Roses, Miles Davis, PRML SCRM, Jeff Buckley, Orbital, Kubrick, Fight Club, Kandinsky, a nuclear bomb. All posters. And a clock what does not work. And a calender of pretty big-eyed animals.

smee (smee), Monday, 3 February 2003 12:54 (twenty-three years ago)

A map of the Isles of Scilly. I will return to you my sweet . . . .

Lynskey (Lynskey), Monday, 3 February 2003 12:54 (twenty-three years ago)

A shelf directly above me when I'm at my computer which I noticed is hanging off the wall at a scary angle. Were it to come off things would get BROKEN.

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 3 February 2003 13:33 (twenty-three years ago)

my office is so big and airy (& scary, come to that) that there are no walls anywhere near my desk which could reasonably be described as mine. On my bedroom wall there are lots and lots of postcards (all of the ones sent to me in the last ten or so years), a sticker from Waterloo Records in Austin TX, the tickets from the Belle & Sebastian gig at the Albert Hall in summer 2001, some pictures from an old Bristol Uni calendar inc. one of the Clifton Suspension Bridge, a computer print out from an old dot-matrix printer at a former job which went absolutlely FUBAR and printed lots of crosswordesque squares rather than what it should've been printing and finally a shelf with the following items: a calendar, a turquoise mug which was a present from my friend Katie, a never-used ashtray, an air-freshener and a kangaroo keyring which was a present my friend Abi bought back from Australia.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 3 February 2003 13:44 (twenty-three years ago)

A map of the world, a Lollies poster, and an Iggy and the Stooges calendar. No, I still haven't decorated. :-(

kate, Monday, 3 February 2003 13:51 (twenty-three years ago)

B-b-but we can't decorate until all the 'temporary measures' in the flat have been DEALT WITH, eg. skirting boards and kitchen issues. And here I was thinking it might be finished by now!

suzy (suzy), Monday, 3 February 2003 13:57 (twenty-three years ago)

A map of the Isles of Scilly. I will return to you my sweet . . . .

There's actually lots of pictures to do with the Scilly Isles, all around the house, also some line drawings, and an Arthur Rackham print (Alice in Wonderland illustrator), and some of my cross-stitches. The big map of the Scilly Isles is the only thing which isn't framed.

Celeste (Celeste), Monday, 3 February 2003 14:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I've got an Interpol & Ivory Coast poster (I got both for free), a map of Mammoth Cave, a collage of sheet music, and this poster:

There's also one Camera Obscura one and some ordinary postcards from the Outer Hebrides: Uig beach, Carloway broch, things like that.

A marker on blue paper depiction of Snoopy done by Charles Schulz for me when I was a baby.

A beautiful oil painting by my aunt Tory of Point Lobos near Carmel, California at night.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 February 2003 15:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Your walls sound great Ned :)

Archel (Archel), Monday, 3 February 2003 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

A mirror. An Edward Gorey calender. I would like some nice maps, or a wallhanging. I am not sure what I mean by wallhanging. It's just this idea I have. Perhaps I'll make one, with felt, or something.

alix (alix), Monday, 3 February 2003 16:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Batik!

Archel (Archel), Monday, 3 February 2003 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Your walls sound great Ned :)

Aw, thanks. :-) Every time I've moved I've put less and less stuff up -- not planning on adding anything more to the walls than those three items.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 February 2003 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Alix: Tie-dye.

I have no posters right now, but there's about twenty under my bed. There's not much wall space showing behind the furniture though, and it's the attic so there's not much to begin with. I am waiting for my giant Sugababes poster to arrive so I can arrange around it.

Graham (graham), Monday, 3 February 2003 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooh under my bed there is a huge poster of that Great Bear 'tube map', in a broken frame. Must get that up again.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 3 February 2003 16:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes. Batik. Not having much luck with wax related products at the moment though, so maybe not. I hate posters. Whilst I was writing my most recent essays it suddenly struck me how little I like posters and I removed any from my walls. Then I went through all my belongings and threw lots of stuff away. Then I read Cosmo. Then I got on with my essay for all of five minutes before realising I should make a sandwich, do the washing up and pair my socks. Then it was too late to bother with the essay. I am a fool.

alix (alix), Monday, 3 February 2003 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooh, I'd love a copy of The Great Bear on my wall. I looked in the shop when I visited Tate Modern last, but they were all out.

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 3 February 2003 17:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I covet Andrew T.'s Go-Betweens poster.

Series of three black and white photos I took in high school of which I'm still fond.

Nothing! I ran out of frames. (Must schedule trip to IKEA and/or Bed Bath and Beyond.)

Jen (nstop), Monday, 3 February 2003 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

At home, just some Kandinsky prints, and to be honest I don't really take notice of them terribly often.

At work, some more prints, of faces: two Japanese (one Zen-style painting, one Utamaro print), one Aztec mask, one Sudanese carving.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 3 February 2003 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm v. jealous of Ned's Snoopy drawing.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 3 February 2003 23:34 (twenty-three years ago)

wood paneling!

other than that, a poster for a Sigmar Polke exhibition, a WR: Mysteries of the Organism poster, a Fantomas (not the band) poster, a photo of Woody Guthrie by John Cohen, some photos I took in Boston, a poster for Madame de... and some other junk. Not much really considering the size of my apt.

Amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 3 February 2003 23:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm v. jealous of Ned's Snoopy drawing.

I'm hoping it doesn't fade anymore than it already has.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 February 2003 23:49 (twenty-three years ago)

portrait in oils of my dog (painted by my mum)
lots of other stuff

duane, Monday, 3 February 2003 23:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Mix of 60s and 70s film posters and racy-yet-hep dime-novel front-cover art, offset with a Funky Space Nation LP cover and a Chris Weston sketch. The whole effect says "Yes, I am cool. But I still LIVE ON MY OWN IN A TINY ROOM."

Al Ewing (Al Ewing), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 00:47 (twenty-three years ago)

A Steve Bell cartoon featuring two bombers with "Eat Nourishing snacks" and "Eat Airbone Death" on their sides, respectively. The pilots are saying "The age of irony is dead, and don't you forget it" I like it. Also pictures of brother, father and great lost love of life. I really should take that last one down.

Matt (Matt), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 01:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Living room: two Dali prints -- an exploding pocketwatch one with no label, dammit, and Christ of St John of the Cross; a sheet tacked up over one of the windows because otherwise the sun shines directly on the couch and television all afternoon; Mardi Gras beads galore; a painting of Jesus on black velvet -- just from the shoulders up, with crown of thorns, looking up all forlorn and forsaken (it came free with my furniture); writing contracts so I don't lose them; letter of praise from Ben & Jerry's; nine of my paintings (there were more, but the adhesive is spontaneously giving out on several of them, despite there being several months' difference in when they were put up); list of writing stuff I need to get to (tacked next to the computer); a Marilyn Monroe calendar; cool words from my cool-words-a-day calendar; copy of my girlfriend's course and teaching schedule; a print of Monet's Twilight in Venice.

Kitchen: another painting; print of Dali's Metamorphosis of Narcissus

Bathroom: two more paintings

Bedroom: eight more paintings; a nicotine-stained print of Duchamp's Nude Descending a Staircase #2; a small Empire Strikes Back poster thing; a promotional tombstone from the Brat Pack comic book.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 01:23 (twenty-three years ago)

nothing at all.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 01:31 (twenty-three years ago)

bedroom (the rest of the house was previously decorated by my housemate) - one of my own digital prints, an fantastic abstract painting by my ex-girlfriend, and a glass framed sixties-ish album cover of chinese opera. I have one more space to fill over my headboard, but it's sketchy putting anything there in an earthquake zone!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 01:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm, not as much as I'd like, I've been down on this apt. since I moved in.

Living Room: -2 vintage posters for the movie Giant and one double-page spread for the same from a 1956 Life magazine. All of these are professionally framed (well so is everything else in my place) but the Life mag one I love the most. It's a gorgeous silver tone vintage moulding around dove gray and dark plum double matting.
-a beautifully framed poster of a friend's band that features hand cut matting
-a photo of strawberry fields, and many baby pics
-a folk art rendention of the virgin of guadalupe
-a vertical frame of a series of Texas postcards from 1942
-a pair of Hiroshige prints with handcut mats and bamboo frames

Bedroom: a Kozik poster of a Boss Hog show in Austin

Kitchen: nothing but what's on the fridge - a large colorized portrait of Hank Williams, a ton of band photos and flyers, more baby pics, bettie page magnets, Lone Star beer caps and some Eminem memorabilia.

Bathroom: A kotex ad from 1936 (I guess my extra large speculum and feminine hygeine memorbilia doesn't count as 'on walls' but they are displayed on an adjoining shelf).

es todo.

That Girl (thatgirl), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 01:48 (twenty-three years ago)

It's not really on the wall, but in my middle room is a life-size cutout of Ernest (Jim Varney) holding a Go-Betweens poster. Then there is a REM, paris, Cure (Boys Don't Cry), Sonic Youth (Murray St.), Lush/Modern English, Uz Jsme Doma (Ears), Built to Spill, autographed Waitress, autographed Trail of Dead, Smiths (Queen is Dead), Loud Family (featured in a NewsWeek ad) and in the barhroom is Etienne Charry and Bertrand Burgalat.

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 02:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Nick, are the empty walls for aesthetic reasons or are you just lazy? Or uninspired? In which case what WOULD you put on your wall, if you could have anything?

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 10:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Jen---I covet Andrew T.'s Go-Betweens poster.

Yeah it's signed, too, by Robert. It's pretty crappy otherwise.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 10:37 (twenty-three years ago)

my nieces paintings, a photo of carrie brownstein, lots of gig posters of all my bands, a poster of the kinks, a poster of the need and a poster of sleater kinney, and my degree and diploma.

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 11:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Yay, the need!

N. probably just didn't have time to put anything on his walls cuz he was too busy ILXing. ;)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 14:16 (twenty-three years ago)

a britney 2002 calender 'cause i failed to get round to buying a 2003 one and a liverpool f.c. team poster from the middle of the echo.

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 14:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Why do I have to be the one that mentions the roof. It's so embarassing. The roof.

My giant 'Babes poster came today so time to break out the duct tape.

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 14:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Hashiguchi Goyo print, smaller Goyo pictures, Isamu Noguchi poster, poster from Indian art exhibit in SF, promo posters from Japan -- Hideki Kaji, P5, free poster from Thee Michelle Gun Elephant gig at the Knitting Factory...

I'm bored of all the stuff on my walls, I want to take it all down and start over...

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:27 (twenty-three years ago)

eventually we will have Art Kane's "Jazz Portrait Harlem 1958"
http://www.harlem.org/people/group6.html
and something by weegee but I don't know what just yet.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:35 (twenty-three years ago)

What else? Cum stains, feces, and my 6'by 4' poster of our savior, the Lord Jesus Christ

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I regret more and more that I didn't get a chance to talk at length about Japanese art with Mary.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Its one of the greatest group portraits out there. I love how Mingus has an aura of pissed offness that keeps everyone away from him. I love how Count Basie has just given up and I love the group at the right-hand end from Lester Young on who are just messing around (any group photo needs somebody pulling faces or something in it).

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh and Monk just looks the epitome of cool.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Honda (Honda), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 00:31 (twenty-three years ago)

A big yellow map of Berlin Mitte with the art galleries marked on it.
A Paris 'Programme des Galeries'.
A Japanese drawing of a manic grinning girl made of six separate postcards.
A poster of a Rita Ackerman painting.
A pack of cards of Berlin brutalist tower block facades, called Plattenbauten.
A huge scrawly map of a Comic Rhizome from Cointel, the 'people's non-linear comic jam'.

I'm definitely making a trip to the library tomorrow for this one.

Jena, Monday, 19 March 2007 01:21 (nineteen years ago)

excellent! that will come in handy because i have nothing on my walls at the moment.

except for a clock that i never bothered to change when daylight saving kicked in. only a week or so until it's telling the right time again!

haitch, Monday, 19 March 2007 01:24 (nineteen years ago)

In frames I've got a Billie Holiday repro-handbill, a Coltrane repro-bill, a print of [Removed Illegal Link] and unframed are a couple of pieces friends have done for me (Bob Dylan with wavy rainbow hair and a hand gripping a mic).

There's also a canvas I did back in high school that I keep to remind me that A) I used to be a Marxist and B) I can't paint for shit.

Thanks for that link Alba, I'm definitely going to make use of this!

I rasterbated a picture of The Smiths last year but got fed up when trying to piece it all together and gave up before it ever made it onto my walls.
We now have a framed sepia toned photograph of a shack on Fire Island, several framed pics a colleague took in Zanzibar, a great shot of our wedding cake surrounded by candles, and a drawing that Peter Max did on the back of a menu for my dad in 1968 when he ate in my parents' restaurant.

curvy mirror
the word sky, on blue paper, high up on the wall
a postcard of a corbusier building that never got built
map of berlin

pretty spare, but that's a good thing

jergincito, Monday, 19 March 2007 10:09 (nineteen years ago)

In my bedroom: NEKKID LADIEZ. The first one of my friends came into my bedroom, she thought I was a lesbian because of all the nudes hanging on the wall and also the naked statues.

stevienixed, Monday, 19 March 2007 10:12 (nineteen years ago)

In the living room, a repro Giant movie poster and a hand-printed Asylum Street Spankers poster with a hand-cut, ornate mat. all nicely framed and matted

Den, a From a Basement on the Hill Elliot Smith promo poster and a collage of funny "slang" flash cards. both nicely framed and matted.

My sewing room: a Bam Margera skateboard deck, some This American Life paint by numbers, a Riverboat Gamblers promo poster, a Gnarls Barkley promo poster and the door sign from my old classroom. unfortunately none of this are framed b/c I'm lazy.

The hallway - a framed collage of my nephews and nieces

Bathroom - A tampax ad from a 1932 Life magazine and a Gil Elvgren print both framed and matted with my most favorite colors: pink and black.

Bedroom - A 1956 Life magazine ad for the movie Giant in a gorgeous tarnished silver frame.

I need more nice wall pieces.

Ms Misery, Monday, 19 March 2007 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

I have lots of stuff on lots of walls. Some of it =

Hallway : large mirrors, bookshelves, and several framed maps (from the 1800s) of Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire and Hong Kong.

Living room : a very large oil on canvas painting of a Paris flea market, which my Dad bought for me many years ago. Several framed photos - family ones mostly, plus an aerial view of my house which I photographed myself while I was drifting over it in a hot air balloon - and an original watercolour by a local artist I like. His stuff looks generally like this :

http://www.kenmesser.co.uk/images/oxfordhighstreet.jpg

but the one I have is of Broad Street and the Sheldonian in Oxford.

Dining room : large mirror, a couple of watercolours by a local artist called William North (I can't find any examples of his work on the net to show you; they're of moorland and are a bit dark and moody-ish)

Kitchen/breakfast room : lots of black-and-white framed family photos in a big group, plus a framed poster of TinTin and Snowy on a motorbike

My office : Framed family pics, plus a framed collage of Wallace & Gromit pictures

Main bedroom : Framed watercolours of The Promenade and the Montpellier district of Cheltenham, framed watercolours of Hong Kong, more family pics.

The kids have stuck all sorts of stuff all over their bedroom walls. With pins and sellotape. Despite me telling them to use white-tak. I try not to be upset.

C J, Monday, 19 March 2007 14:17 (nineteen years ago)

Calanders, a few drawings, hooks and racks for clothes and hats and stuff. Spiders.

Oilyrags, Monday, 19 March 2007 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't put up much in this flat, because I've been grooving on the murals and the colour of the walls.

The few posters I have:
-map of world I've had since I moved to the UK

I have these three nice propaganda-posters from OSPAAL about international solidarity, two german punkposters and a large 50's modul bookshelf by swedish designer Nisse Strinning. All very tasteful.

three years pass...

what's on your walls now ilx? i have a huge high ceiling and endless wall space, but only two posters. a huge salvadore dali christ of st john of the cross above my bed behind me, and Monet San Giorgia Maggiore at Twilight in front of it. are there other things to do with wall space besides posters? what do you do?
