crushing disappointment

So, you've set all your hopes on one (seemingly unlikely, but you were confident) opportunity. And then it comes crashing down and you don't know what to dream about anymore. What do you do?

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 3 February 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

wait.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 3 February 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I realize this is v negative sounding, but I've learned to lower my expectations.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 3 February 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Laugh?

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 3 February 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

cry. then think about alternative ideas. lowering expectations isn't negative if it's realistic to do so.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Monday, 3 February 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope that is only theoretical, Melissa. If so, I tend not to do this nowadays, because it's pretty close to how I felt when my marriage ended.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 3 February 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I move on. I bounce pretty easily by now. Higher results with lower expectations.

Not theoretical. :(

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 3 February 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

write a pissy review of it for a major publication

Develop a mad crush on a near-unattainable boy who responds to your flirting cause he's insecure and moody. That's what I've done.

I don't know where to find new dreams. Project your old dreams onto someone else and combine forces to at least make your mutual dream come true for them?

Dreams are overrated anyway. The only thing worse than the crushing disappointment of not having a dream come true is the hollow sham of having a dream half come true and then realise that it wasn't what you wanted or needed all along.

OK, I'll stop because I'm depressing myself at this point. I really hope that things look up for you, Mel, cause you deserve it!

I don't remember all your plans, Melissa, but I'm really sorry if they have fallen through. Especially if it means you aren't coming over to England, as I was looking forward to meeting you. Do you want to talk about it?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 3 February 2003 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

How did the jam session go, kate?

The job I was really hoping for/counting on in England has fallen through. So I don't know if I'm coming or not. a) The possibility of this job was one of the reasons I wanted to come, b) I don't know if I want to go without having a job pre-arranged. The company I wanted to work for has a staff of people I already know to some degree. I really don't want to work with complete strangers, and I really don't want a job just to provide me with money for my stay. I wanted a job that would provide some good experience and be enjoyable.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 3 February 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm really sorry that's happened, Melissa. I hope you can sort something out that suits you.

Breathe a huge sigh of relief.

You don't want to work with strangers? Hmm.. that does make things tricky.

I'd like to know one person who works there in SOME respect (even if that respect is through the internet).

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 3 February 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

But you can make friends at whatever job...?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 3 February 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel the same way about jobs, mel, but realise that it isn't actually very possible.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 3 February 2003 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

damm melissa, i'm sorry.
