Didn't see any mention of his recent death here, but I always thought he was a good critic and an interesting one, even though I often didn't agree with him (especially on Salinger). I have a copy of Love & Death in the American Novel which I keep meaning to read all the way through: the bits on Huck Finn are quite good.

The Salon interview they did right before he died was interesting: He said Martin Luther King was "one of the worst human beings I ever met"!

Love & Death... is one of my favourite books on American culture. A big influence, I think, on - among others - Pauline Kael, Greil Marcus, Camille Paglia and Steve Erickson.
