Lips

My lips are chapped, but the worst bit is in the corner of my mouth. I keep putting chap stick on it but then I yawn or something and break it open again. Ouch!

When I searched to see if there was already a thread on lips, I got threads on Solipsism. Oh, silly ILXors.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

chap stick defeats your body's own ability to keep your lips moist, only use it in extremis.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

But how can I make the corner of my mouth heal faster?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a bit on my upper lip just now. it was worse at the weekend. I kept licking it even though I knew not to. it got all sore and tight and would crack when I would laugh/talk much. I have some vaseline lip therapy petroleum jelly stuff I'm putting on it.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Bonjela.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Bonjella. Antiseptic for the mouth area.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, that's good advice.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I have this too, a bit, a cracked upper lip - it often seems to go with flu.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Bonjella=bonobo?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I've no idea what the US equivalent is though.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Between this and your martini posts you've been dropping some mad mouth science.

Aaron A., Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

chapping at the corners of your mouth can be caused by a B12 deficiency: eat meat. Also can be some kind of infection: make out with healthy people and steal their power.

g.cannon (gcannon), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm... Haven't had any meat in over 10 years... Good thing I don't have eternal chapping... Maybe I can find that in a vitamin?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

haha "in a victim"

Yeah, they have supplements for everything. nb I am not a doctor...

g.cannon (gcannon), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I would trust my judgment on martinis far more than my judgment on chapped lips but bonjella is great for all kind of mouth complaints (cysts ulcers and the like), it tastes kind of aniseedy and is made by ICI.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

And you work for the company that makes it.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaron A., Tuesday, 4 February 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

My lips are quite often chapped, esp. the lower one, but as to whether anyone notices and goes "ew! look at that, it's gross!" or not I really have no idea. I own some lipsyl but rarely use it, even in cold weather. The makers of Lipsyl, Bonjela and other similar products haven't really caitalised on the whole social ostracism thing as much as, say Head 'n' Shoulders and Clearasyl, but I see no reason why they shouldn't have done so...the fact that one particular product's advertisers haven't made pariahs of ppl with some trivial physical condition is something we should celebrate, I suppose.

Blistex! You have to get blistex(used to be blistese). I've tried everything, I have eczema and extremely sensitive so sometimes I suffer from hideously chapped lips. The only thing that works is original blistex, all those other chap sticks, lypsyls and stuff just make me worse.

smee (smee), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Blistex is amazing stuff, but if i use it too much I get dependent on it.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, you have to be careful with it or it becomes addictive, but I think you can say that about a lot of similar products too

smee (smee), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

WHAT ABOUT CARMEX? I too have chronically chapped lips, everytime they are trying to heal eating or showering takes the ugly scabby layers off. Its so wearisome. It has been like this for years though! Ma be related to how I often have a cold and breathe out of my mouth, partially - breath does much harm. I just want them to heal. I just need all the layers to come and stay, and not peel away, for this I pray, for this I pray. I do not want swollen slabs of flesh surrounding my mouth anymore (okay, its not really that bad). I want regular external-mouth-skin.

I WANT LIPS. FOR MY BIRTHDAY.

Vic (Vic), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I've borrowed my bf's medicated chap stick, but I def need to get something stronger.
THe corner of my mouth looks so gross now. It's like I have a mouth and then a baby mouth inside that one. ARUGHGHGH!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 6 February 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

"Cherry Chapstick" is my favourite Yo La Tengo song, incidentally.

Let's save Tony Orlando's house, surely. Sorry, wrong board....

Matt (Matt), Friday, 7 February 2003 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Grrr... My lip is still looking weird and it's been over a week. In the morning it will feel fine until I brush my teeth and then it cracks again. Ouchy!!! Now I'm trying to take lyzeme (sp?) tablets.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Try tea tree oil...it's antiseptic and will seal out bad stuff while the oil softens up the dry bits. Drink lots of water too.

chapping at the corners of your mouth can be caused by a B12 deficiency

This is true, but to confirm, see if your tongue has a very pronounced line down the middle. If you do, then it's B12. But you don't need to eat meat...milk and eggs have B12, and most cereals are enriched with it. Or take a vitamin.

The best lip stuff ever is Burt's Beeswax Lip Balm. It's not addictive the way chapstick and carmex are; it just works. Petroleum-based products on lips are yucky.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a bit complex, but it is good stuff. My grandma makes it in vast quantities and distributes it. You need loads of marigold petals, dry them in the oven and grind them to powder. Get a saucepan you don't really care about ruining, heat up a load of vaseline until it's liquid, mix in powdered marigold petals. Pour into pots, leave to set.

It's brilliant. Chapped lips, dry skin, bags under eyes, small cuts and grazes, stubble rash, spots (I also questioned the wisdom of putting something vaseline based on spots, but it does get rid of them). Honestly, it really works, although it is a pain to make, even though I don't.

(I do not come from a family of witches)

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Anna, Is that for real or is this all an elaborate attempt to make me dry marigold petals, buy vaseline, and ruin a pot..?

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

It is for real I have a pot of it on my desk right now.

(Oh, no Sarah, no, when I go out to create ruin it's much more elaborate than that - bwah ha ha!)

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 13 February 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

how much are you/ your grandma charging for it? (i feel conflicted about ruining a pot)

Vic (Vic), Thursday, 13 February 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Today I bought a bag of pick'n'mix sweets to celebrate valentine's day. One of them was a pair of lips.

I am starting this discussion about sweets here cos I can't seem to find a Sweets thread, or indeed a Food category, anywhere.

the pinefox, Friday, 14 February 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Good job with the thread revival, the pinefox.

My lip, for anyone interested, is almost completely healed! Hurrah! I won't look like a witch any more.

Sweets I have gotten for Valentine's so far: a small heart-shaped box of chocolates, a piece of cake, and a couple of frosted cookies from the attorneys office next door/ a lollipop from the receptionist. C'est tous.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 14 February 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Haribo! Haribo!

Lara (Lara), Friday, 14 February 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

PF you have to go to the New Questions page (instead of New Answers), and scroll down—Cuisine

as long as there wasn't a "bubblegum tongue" chocolate lips are okay, i guess. yesterday i bought a box of leonidas chocolates and promptly left them at a bar.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 14 February 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

My lips want chocolate covered cherries.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 14 February 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Carmex, medicated Chapstick and Blistex are horrible for your lips. They have an ingrediant that dries out your lips after the initial moisture, thus the seeming addiction. That tingling is actually layers on your lips being vaporized. I found this out after I was overcome by months of chapped lips and never ending applications of carmex and Blistex trying to return my lips to normal. The best thing is drinking lots of water and applying straight vitamin e.

Trust me nothing is worse for your lips than those brands of lip balms- and maybe giving lots of blow jobs... but we can't have everything can we.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 14 February 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Listen, don't go around saying giving blow jobs is bad for your lips!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 14 February 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Soon, genetic engineering will enable us to make genitals taste like chocolate covered cherries.

Millar (Millar), Friday, 14 February 2003 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not saying it's bad for your lips like carmex or blistex but if you give, say 3 blow jobs a day over a weekend, it starts to wear a little and you'll soon have punch bowl mouth.

Carey (Carey), Saturday, 15 February 2003 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

What are you doing this weekend?

oops (Oops), Saturday, 15 February 2003 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

besides, I hate chocolate covered cherries...

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 15 February 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Why would someone want to have genitalia that taste like chocolate-covered cherries? I mean, really, dark chocOlate truffles with Grand Mariner filling are much more appealing!

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Saturday, 15 February 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 15 February 2003 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

My lip, for anyone interested, is almost completely healed!

Sarah, are you not at least going to share your secret??

Carey, are you serious? Maybe this is why I've been putting Blistex on every day for the last two weeks, with only worse results. Where do I get Vitamin E, is there a cream ?

Vic (Vic), Saturday, 15 February 2003 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I never have chapped lips. Maybe because I wear lipstick every day?

Melissa W (Melissa W), Saturday, 15 February 2003 06:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i use Jane lipstick with menthol and SPF15 everyday as a base for my real color lipstick. I never have a problem as long as I do this.

I also apply vaseline directly to lips at least once a day. Supple, kissable, yum.

p.s. anna's solution sounds lovely. an old family friend would do the same thing with comfrey. it was a fantastic salve.

That Girl (thatgirl), Saturday, 15 February 2003 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I never have chapped lips. Maybe because I wear lipstick every day?

This is not a viable option, alas.

Currently, I can't afford lipstick.

I just bought my new chapstick of the season the other day. This time I got Chapstick's All Natural kind, but medicated feels better.

Revive!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 15:08 (twenty years ago)

I've been putting Neutrogena hand cream on my lips. Keep forgetting that I need to buy me some Burts Bees stick thingie.

I am loving Pupa lipgloss at the moment - it comes with a brush, not a sponge! - and also some Tinkerbell lipbalm I found in a drawer that I bought about 10 years ago from Toys R Us. it still tastes of cherries, so I reckon it must be OK.

My lips are going into winter mode. I'll probably start picking bits off them soon.

I don't know, there might be some sort of lip critical mass, like if the chick from Firefly that I posted made out with Angelina Jolie. Lives could be at stake.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 7 October 2004 15:16 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I kinda worry about that when I look at my partners, like will their lips + mine = baby fish lips? Same with noses.

No Vaseline is not good. I don't know why they make 'lip therapy' tins because the stuff provides no moisture at all and they'll feel even worse after 5 mins. I love Carmex, feels a little bit tingly when you put it on.
