Ask ambrose to introduce you to Hannah with whom he used to live, over email natch. She's half polish and spent 6 months living in Krakow and knows the rest of Poland preety well.

gareth (gareth), Friday, 7 February 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't help you here, Gareth, but I'm interested in any replies. Or about Krakow, since we're more likely to go there. Or Vilnius for that matter.

Just writing about Poland has made me hungry for pierogies.

It's not bad. The Bescot Stadium is a bit shit, though.

It seems I'm going to Warsaw on Monday/Tuesday. What would you do with only one evening in town? Any restaurant ideas.

I haven't been for ages but it's quite an interesting city. The 'historical centre' is very pretty - you wouldn't really know that it had been rebuilt completely since the war. It's not somewhere packed with must-see sights - what wasn't destroyed by the war tends to have been destroyed afterwards but there's some ok Stalinist-Gothic architecture. It might be somewhere to load up on culture before heading on to Krakow. The Jewish Theatre is fascinating and the opera is very good. There's also a huge Empik record store that has a cracking selection of CDs and DVDs.

yeah the huge Empik is almost shockingly good. great museums, too.

warsaw is one of the most pleasant-smelling cities i've ever been to and the locals there were almost uniformly congenial and friendly to me. (tbh both of these things surprised me when i visited)
