I learnt my HTML from :-http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/">WebmonkeyI really hope that link works, or I'm gonna look like a right plonk aren't I.
I don't know much about web hosts, I use an expensive one because I need the quality of the server and a proper domain name. There are tonnes of free hosts out there though, just shop around.

I know Storagebin is free and offers 250 megs of webspace, that's all I know though. The trouble with free hosts is that they can give you pop up adverts and, more importantly in your case, constant server downtimes.

i've been procrastinating like hell over my website so in the meantime i'm planning to put some of my work on wordpress, just so it can be online somewhere. i have a domain name - cohdesign.co.uk - and i understand that i can make that the address of the wordpress blog thing. that's fine.
the problem is that i did this all backwards and got business cards printed up (a long time ago!) which have my email address as "myfirstname&qu✧✧✧@cohdes✧✧✧.c✧.u✧ rather than doing what i should have done and gone for "myfullname&qu✧✧✧@gm✧✧✧.c✧✧. the guy who was designing my site at that point talked me into doing that but then he disappeared off the map and i can't afford a website designer/builder at the moment.
is there any way i can use wordpress for the site and have the myname@cohdesign email address?
thanks in advance.

just to clarify because of the disguising this ILX does:
the problem is that i did this all backwards and got business cards printed up (a long time ago!) which have my email address as "myfirstname" @ cohdesign dot co dot uk rather than doing what i should have done and gone for "myfullname" @ gmail dot com.

ok, well i hope you get the gist of that.
― jed_, Thursday, 14 April 2011 12:09 (thirteen years ago) link
I'm guessing you're being hosted on wordpress.com, as opposed to running a wordpress build on a different server? If so, google's got you covered.

thanks for the advice sktsh, i will look into this. (yes i just meant using wordpress with my own personal url)

OK so I am hoping to get my site running myself and I have never done any of this stuff before. I am happy for it to be pretty simple design-wise, I want text and a few images and maybe just embedding some stuff from Vimeo. However, I do also want to start a blog so I can get my writing muscles working again (yes, really). Thinking of doing this through a separate service. Or do I use something like http://www.indexhibit.org/ and try to combine it with a Wordpress blog or something?

it's not clear what you want the text, images and videos for, but if it's a portfolio type of thing, this looks pretty cool http://www.behance.net/prosite

I want a website to showcase my professional work. I've been putting it off for ages, but it needs to be good-looking, fairly simple, and able to host videos and sound files. What's best? I tried Wordpress and it was way too involved for my needs. Is it better to use Squarespace or Wix or something else?

Iirc some providers that cater to artists are cargo.site and otherpeoplespixels

I tried reclaim hosting with wordpress. Seemed easy enough to use https://lathamgreen.com/wordpress/

I find Wordpress very easy. I have three sites running at the moment:
http://burningambulance.comhttp://philipdfreeman.comhttp://iafreeman.com (my wife's art and design work)
Happy to advise. Don't use my ilx email address, though; I never check it. burningambulance at gmail is better.

I don’t know how well / easily they handle video and audio, but I look at a lot of design and illustration portfolios daily for work and I’d say the majority of the ones I see are put together with Squarespace, with probably Wix in second. I generally find them nicely laid out and easy to navigate; the portfolios that drive me nuts are the ones that try to be clever with animation, horizontal scrolling, etc.

Is it better to host the media stuff externally on YouTube and Soundcloud and then embed it?
― the wedding preset (dog latin), Friday, 10 January 2025 15:52 (three weeks ago) link
(thanks btw all, this is helpful)
I made one using porkbun for hosting, which uses Weebly as a builder, and found it all easy enough.

If not for the time/effort, would you like the idea of having a website as a kind of creative outlet unto itself, or is it more of a professional obligation all the way down?

Thanks! Yeah, her stuff is mind-blowing to me.

Philip's idea is where my mind went, too. Probably because I teach web design and just got done rewriting my own site a bit.

If anyone wants to go 100% DIY, I can advise folks on how you too can roll your own self-hosting with WordPress running on Linode with AWS doing the heavy lifting on the backside. Plus you can run an internet radio station off of it
unperson's wife's paperwork is really, really cool: https://iafreeman.com/paper/

It's a portfolio for my work as a copywriter first and foremost, although I might see about expanding it to other projects.
I started something in Squarespace at the weekend - took a bit of fiddling around to get used to how the interface works, but I'm getting the hang of it now I think!
