Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 6 February 2003 21:22 (twenty-three years ago)

An underscore is a legitimate character on a US licence plate? What next? Emoticons?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 6 February 2003 21:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Nah I just put in the underscore to distinguish the two... it's technically BITE ME.

Here's one for Michigan (if you get tired of Maine)...

http://sosntsl01.sos.state.mi.us/plates/papstep2.asp?plateTYPE=STANDARD&plateID=splendor

BITE ME and BITEME aren't available here either!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 6 February 2003 21:25 (twenty-three years ago)

hahahahaha... okay this is fun...

you can make jpg's of any plate you want using the following HTML line

http://sosntsl01.sos.state.mi.us/plates/myPlate.asp?phrase=ILX0R&plateType=STANDARD&plateID=splendor

or

http://sosntsl01.sos.state.mi.us/plates/myPlate.asp?phrase=ILX0R&plateType=STANDARD&plateID=blue

Just substitute ILXOR for your favorite phrase such as SUCKASS or BITEME or FUCK U (as long as it's 7 letters or less). I've been entertained for quite a while now!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 6 February 2003 21:41 (twenty-three years ago)

GREBT only costs $40!!!!!!

Reminds me of the time I saw a [something].COM license plate -- Virginia is very big on vanity plates.

Just be careful -- the agencies issuing these plates generally have the right to veto or recall any they find to be offensive or obscene. Supposedly years ago someone slipped "MERDE" past the DC DMV, who recalled the plates when they were told what it means.

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 7 February 2003 00:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think CJ really had her heart set on owning it, j.lu.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 7 February 2003 00:38 (twenty-three years ago)

DPS will also recall your plate upon request

I heard a story, somewhere, that every state has on its a payroll a group of people, fluent in multiple languages, whose job it is to "offensive wording" monitor every license plate - including abbreviations, "sounds like" wording, and so forth. I always thought that they'd be an interesting group of people to meet - such a bounty of new swear words.

I can't link to that pic for some reason, but ROXOR is still available.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 7 February 2003 10:13 (twenty-three years ago)

TWAT is taken. Somewhere in Maine there is a bloke driving around with TWAT on his license plate! RAH!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 7 February 2003 10:22 (twenty-three years ago)

> What next? Emoticons?

i seem to recall that a heart and a hand were both valid symbols for californian (and elsewhere?) plates. oh, and a star and a plus.
