(no joke!)

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 7 February 2003 22:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Pretty broke. I type this in the big 3-bedroomed house in London, 400 yards from a tube station, north of the river, that my then-wife and I bought when we were together and earning similar amounts, less than three years ago. Not cheap. For the last 18 months I have been coping alone, only slightly helped by a lodger. Not much room to spare in that.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 7 February 2003 22:10 (twenty-three years ago)

C.C.D. myself

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 7 February 2003 22:23 (twenty-three years ago)

(i think the low point was when i realized that i couldn't afford a bus pass this month and looping in my head was amil's line from "can i get a?", the "how we gonna get around on your bus pass?" one.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 7 February 2003 22:23 (twenty-three years ago)

No one making my salary should be as broke as I am. But I am.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 7 February 2003 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I want to sell my services (and soul) to a major military-industrial contractor who is advertising a proposals editor job at a fat salary range. But they haven't responded to my resume!

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 7 February 2003 22:32 (twenty-three years ago)

zimm zimma who got the wallet with my travelcard?

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 7 February 2003 22:42 (twenty-three years ago)

jel -- (jel), Friday, 7 February 2003 23:08 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't know if this would work in your town, but when i was b.a.a.j. i used to drop a lots of nickels and dimes in the slot BUT LESS THAN THE CORRECT FARE to save myself like 50 cents a trip on the bus

it adds up!

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 7 February 2003 23:36 (twenty-three years ago)

i did that today. another benefit of living up here: girlfriends with lots of otherwise unusable CANADIAN COINS that slip unassumingly into the bus fare slot.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 7 February 2003 23:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I am most certainly a. And, Jess, I've had the Amil line in my head many times before, as well. :(

Vic (Vic), Saturday, 8 February 2003 06:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 8 February 2003 06:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn fukcingn right. Broke as a joke here, I'm afraid.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 8 February 2003 13:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Living 'paycheck to paycheck' necessitates a paycheck.

There's broke and then there's broke; rate your poverty...have you:

1) Dumpster-dived?

2) For Food?

3) Shoplifted out of hunger?

4) Sold plasma for food/shelter/clinic visit?

5) Asked for 'pulls' in the produce isle?

6) Lived in a garage or on a friend's couch?

7) Lived in a vehicle?

8) Lived in a shelter?

9) Lived under a bridge/overpass or in an abandoned/condemned structure?

10) Collected cans for several hours a day?

11) Pan-handled/busked?

12) Honestly considered prostitution or incarceration as alternative means of income/security?

13) Practiced prostitution/intentional-incarceration?

Ryan McKay (Ryan McKay), Saturday, 8 February 2003 13:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Living 'paycheck to paycheck' necessitates a paycheck.
There's broke and then there's broke; rate your poverty...have you:

1) Dumpster-dived?

Yes, & will still do it if I find a dumpster (UK="skip") usually for firewood. Will frequently (in winter months) collect wood from broken fences for firewood.

2) For Food?

No, but have discovered that if u go into supermarket 10 mins b4 closing time, they sell all thee bread off for 10p per loaf.

3) Shoplifted out of hunger?

no

4) Sold plasma for food/shelter/clinic visit?

no

5) Asked for 'pulls' in the produce isle?

No, if this means what I think it means. I always check the damaged produce shelf tho, & will buy damaged cans, boxen etc in preference to undamaged.

6) Lived in a garage or on a friend's couch?

couch yes garage no.

7) Lived in a vehicle?

no.

8) Lived in a shelter?

no

9) Lived under a bridge/overpass or in an abandoned/condemned structure?

no, but copped out of paying any rent (by ahem disappearing/midnight flit) after living in unsafe & disgusting flat

10) Collected cans for several hours a day?

option has never been available

11) Pan-handled/busked?

no.

12) Honestly considered prostitution or incarceration as alternative means of income/security?

the former yes, the latter no

13) Practiced prostitution/intentional-incarceration?

no.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 8 February 2003 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Ryan's perspective is a necessary one for me, if for no one else, in that my 'broke' is far from destitute. I'm a systems analyst working in central London, so hardly on a low income, but the after-effects of a broken marriage have left me with high expenses, and for various reasons (long story!) haven't been able to sell up and adjust appropriately. I don't have to count the pennies for food, and being broke really only amounts to watching my luxury spending pretty closely.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 8 February 2003 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

boxen = box herd

zemko (bob), Saturday, 8 February 2003 20:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm clocking crazy dollars! Finally!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Well...slightly crazy. Pretty damn silly.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Do it for the love, jess.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

You work in a record store=Ebay is your friend.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

My mum-in-law & I went to WENDY'S w/ a bag of 350 unrolled pennies she collected. She spent about 10 mins. correcting her order w/4 people in line behind us, THEN demanded to pay w/pennies! Which they tried to refuse. She offered to count them all and they basically threw her chili at her and were all grumpy like "arrrgh whatever here's your food." Then she asked for a bunch of free crackers.

So I hang out w/a crazy old lady & we're both really poor and basically sociopaths. C'est la vie.

Abbott (Abbott), Sunday, 14 January 2007 20:50 (nineteen years ago)

awesome

friday on the porch (lfam), Sunday, 14 January 2007 21:00 (nineteen years ago)

Impressive work.

I have a dizzying amount of money in my current account at the mo, but it's all earmarked for one thing and another, and when it's gone I shall be somewhat impecunious for a month or two.

Matt (Matt), Monday, 15 January 2007 12:08 (nineteen years ago)

mo money mo problems

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Monday, 15 January 2007 12:14 (nineteen years ago)

broke as a joke! if i have #300 in my account after paying rent i feel totally bling-bling which i realise is ridiculous. don't really mind though, i'm not expensive to run and i'm not responsible for anyone other than myself so...

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 15 January 2007 12:15 (nineteen years ago)

energy bills make me crazy.

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Monday, 15 January 2007 12:17 (nineteen years ago)

God, how things change. I never did that degree. But now I'm clocking crazy dollars anyway. Now I just wish I could let go of the "ohmigod, I'm so broke" mentality and actually, like, buy some furniture and stuff.

The Long Grey And Overcast Tea Time Of The Soul (kate), Monday, 15 January 2007 12:20 (nineteen years ago)

I am doing quite nicely now, despite spending an absolute shedload over the last few weeks but I'm expecting a nice big cheque at the end of the month (touch wood). 'Crazy dollars' might be stretching it a bit but I have no debts and more in the bank than ever before so I'm pretty content.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 15 January 2007 12:21 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

Man last month I was ballin out of control with the refund check and the stimulus check and a scholarship reward check and graduation money and an emergency fund I set up through ING.

Then I got hit with $500 in tickets and $2280 in fines.

Now I'm broke (as in like bank account is in single digits for the first time since my lean days) and nearly $3k in debt on top of my monthly car payment and increased summer energy bill and rising gas prices and jesus strike me down cause it'd be easier.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 12 July 2008 00:46 (seventeen years ago)

sorry HOOS

what's the tix/fines for

mookieproof, Saturday, 12 July 2008 00:49 (seventeen years ago)

Broke but not as a joke, its serious yo. I'll be clocking crazy pounds tomorrow tho, hit me on the payside yeah! I always freak out about money but then I get mad paper suddenly just when I truly need it and not just coz I have a shoe fix that I need.
I really can't talk about money and be 'street' and English at the same time. FAIL.
Shame Hoos, I second mookie's question, I know a coupla decent lawyers (don't ask) if you want some advice.

VeronaInTheClub, Saturday, 12 July 2008 01:05 (seventeen years ago)

It's a long story, but in essence:

-Summer 06 I was pulled over for an expired registration. I was insured, but I didn't have my most current insurance card on me. I was ticketed for driving without insurance. A week later I was pulled over again because I hadn't had the time to renew the registration yet. I didn't have the first ticket on my person, so I was ticketed a second time for driving without insurance. The fine for each of those stops is $250/year for the next 3 years.

-Texas law says that being ticketed twice for driving without insurance is cause for your license to be suspended. I didn't get any notification because the city had the wrong address on file for me. When I was stopped for speeding (doin 55 in a 54, if you will), the officer told me (much to my shock) that I was driving with a suspended license. I paid the $300 fine on that ticket, then started the process of renewing my license today. $250 in fees, plus another set of $250/year for the next three years.

-Oh and I got stopped again last night. I've been having the gf drive me places to be on the safe side, but we made a 1 am Denny's run and I figured we'd be fine. On the way back my girlfriend saw a possum dart across the road and wanted to get a closer look. 1:30 am, no one around in the residential area, so I made a U to go back. Motorcycle cop parked under a tree in the dark in a residential area at 1:30 am, fuck you. Got ticketed a second time for driving with a suspended license, another $300.

So all told it's $2800 in fines.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 12 July 2008 01:19 (seventeen years ago)

I'd be clocking crazy dollars if I didn't live in London with a wife who's too sick to work and ineligible for the dole. As it is I'm getting by OK but have no money to spend on stupidly expensive punk singles.

xpost yikes hoos :(

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 12 July 2008 01:21 (seventeen years ago)

fuck

mookieproof, Saturday, 12 July 2008 01:22 (seventeen years ago)

at any rate, i am not quite either. my dollars almost exactly pay the rent, but fail to cover my drinking habit.

mookieproof, Saturday, 12 July 2008 01:23 (seventeen years ago)

Mookie I feel like this every fucking day.
Anyways Hoos...this is mostly American legal stuff (so I can only give vague answers till I speak to my friend) but the fact that they didn't give you proper warning and the city getting the wrong address is stuff you can pull up. I wouldn't just take it, these are big fines and if they've messed up by not notifying you properly then you should at least be able to drop one of the fines (maybe the first suspended licence one?) and have extra time given within which to pay. There's bound to be a loophole for the other two and have you double checked the statements they gave you? Is every i dotted? Because even silly procedural stuff on that shit can help you out.
I'm not as versed on US law but I'll get back to you when I get in touch with my mate, this seems all a little too silly. The possum story if you don't mind me saying tho, is jokes.

VeronaInTheClub, Saturday, 12 July 2008 01:26 (seventeen years ago)

dayum, my DWI didn't cost me that much

Never heard of the insurance thing - when I get pulled over without my insurance card (which is pretty much a yearly thing), it's a $10 fee to have it dismissed when I bring in proof of insurance.

milo z, Saturday, 12 July 2008 01:26 (seventeen years ago)

^^^Exactly. Something in the milk ain't clean Hoos.

VeronaInTheClub, Saturday, 12 July 2008 01:28 (seventeen years ago)

TEXAS

mookieproof, Saturday, 12 July 2008 01:29 (seventeen years ago)

?

mookieproof, Saturday, 12 July 2008 01:29 (seventeen years ago)

Well, it has to be dismissed within a certain period (two weeks, a month, usually). If HOOS let it go to warrant he's SOL.

And I don't know if it's a state thing or just the North Texas communities that routinely ticket my ass who let you get it dismissed easily.

milo z, Saturday, 12 July 2008 01:31 (seventeen years ago)

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 12 July 2008 01:55 (seventeen years ago)

I was stopped recently for running a red light, and the cop totally made no big deal that I didn't have my current insurance card with me.

libcrypt, Saturday, 12 July 2008 01:55 (seventeen years ago)

My insurance went up about $200/month with that driving w/suspended license conviction, and my (now paid off) monthly credit card payment was supposed to go towards that, but instead it's gonna be goin towards these bullshit fines for the next 3 years.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 12 July 2008 02:00 (seventeen years ago)

so yeah as i told j0 a bit ago i basically want to skullfuck debt right now

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 12 July 2008 02:16 (seventeen years ago)

my electric bill and car payment were due today and i can either pay them or pay off the rent that i put on my credit card

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 12 July 2008 02:16 (seventeen years ago)

which btw was late because the gf's job fucked up her paycheck so we didn't even get that in til we had a $150 late fee attached

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 12 July 2008 02:17 (seventeen years ago)

would be a nice skullfuck

J0rdan S., Saturday, 12 July 2008 02:17 (seventeen years ago)

debt is a cunt

carne asada, Saturday, 12 July 2008 02:40 (seventeen years ago)

We just signed lease on a new place, and I just bought a fancy new fridge, but I even tho we both clock decent dollars, I'll be broke for a while cause I borrowed off the parents to meet the bond/rent/moving costs, so I'll be paying them back for at least 6 months, plus paying off a ridiculous credit card debt of about 6k (stupid computer buying lust), but hey I manage ok, and now have a lovely new house to move into so I'm good.

It always scares me though how all this hinges on one's employment: I got nothing in savings, so if either of us lose our jobs we're instantly thrown into a scary position which is what happened late last year for a short while. I really need to start budgeting better and saving a slush fund for emergencies again.

Trayce, Saturday, 12 July 2008 06:20 (seventeen years ago)

so far into a) it's unbelievable

The Reverend, Saturday, 12 July 2008 07:22 (seventeen years ago)

I've got a broke mentality.

Even though I'm now earning good money, I always feel like it could be taken away at any moment, and have really bad nerves about making any major expenditure.

wait, how is this even possible? they're fining you in the future??

Mr. Que, Monday, 14 July 2008 21:50 (seventeen years ago)

never mind, just googled it, WTF

As of Sept. 1, 2003, certain offenses carry an automatic surcharge for three years, including DWI-related offenses, no insurance, driving while license suspended and driving without a license. For example, the fee for a first-time DWI offender is $1,000 per year for three years.
